DIY crossover upgrade on a garage sale Yamaha AP4400M

  • I found this set of speakers at a garage sale for $20 and though it would be fun to see if I could make it sound better than a $20 set of speakers.
    The Yamaha AP4400M seems to have been a set of main speakers that originally came in a surround package with the 4400C being the center and the 4400S being the surrounds. I believe these are from the early 2000s.
    Power Handling - 100w max at 6Ω
    Frequency range - 55Hz to 28kHz
    I used 18 ga air core inductors and polypropylene capacitors in the upgraded crossover, 14 ga OFC internal wire, soldered connections and banana connectors.

      Lol. I don't see why it would bother them. Danny inspired me to try this. Besides, he'll do a much better job and designing a more accurate crossover. This 1st order isn't meant to make these studio monitors, just more enjoyable to listen to. Thanks for watching! I appreciate it. 👍

      @@RickRuizAudio hahahaha. You are very humble. My point is that you are showing people the process and the required parts for free as free information. You are also showing us the experiment in real life. No fancy graphs or claims of magical ear. Just straightforward audio science. I love it. You should post more content like this. I'm a physics head myself so I like it when I see folks breakdown simple physics and it application in real life.

Aahh! 🤣 Hey, I'll post the schematic next time! 😂 No, but jokes aside, I would have to put a disclaimer that this is an amateur attempt, because it's rough out here in TH-cam land. People will probably jump in to say what a poor design! I do have plans to do another. I found some Technics speakers from 95 but the guy wants $50 for them. If I can talk him down, I'll get them and post a video on that one as well! Again, I appreciate it!

Showing basics relationship between resistors, capacitance and inductor, and how they affects or theirpurpose in a crossover network for speakers. You can also find a fancy name for the video. Eg. Cheap Cross over DIY ideas. DIY on the cheap. Etc

    How do u calculate frequency going thru based om capacitance/mH and speaker impedance?

      There are formulas online that will give you the electrical parameters. That's a starting point. But then you'll need the speakers parameters as well as the box to calculate more precise measures for your specific project. Check out Toids DIY Audio video on XSIM. Or Audio Judgements channel is great as well. I do recommend his Udemy courses. He gives you excel spreadsheets that help w some calculations.
