    Remember this is only one song. Every song they do has their sound but every song they do is totally different. Kanami only plays solos that fit the song and they tend to be short. She doesn't stand up there and just shred constantly although there are pieces they do that would probably be more to your liking. Misa can slap, pick and tap that bass. She's one of the best around. During one of the songs earlier in this concert Saiki was "kidnapped" by the audience and lost her shoes. She finished out the shoe shoeless so both she and Misa were without. Misa never wears shoes on stage and likes taking a swig out of her whiskey bottle now and then. Akane, the drummer, was so admired by Jimmy Page that he went backstage to meet her and there's a picture of the two together floating around on the internet. Be aware that Kanami writes practically all the music and Miku (Rhythm GTR) writes the lyrics. Some people try to compare them to Love Bites but they're two totally different types of music. Love Bites is excellent too but Band Maid's style of music is more to my liking. Some of their newest stuff off the Unseen World is absolutely insane sounding.

    • @cfofra
      @cfofra 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I agree, I don't think I would like the music as much if Kanami just stood up there and stole the show. Their strength is in attempting to showcase everyone's talents in proper time and space.

      @takecham5155 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Agree
      As is often the case
      It makes me sick to be compared just because everyone in Japan has something in common with a female rock band.
      Each has different goals.
      As we grow up in Japanese culture and the music scene, it is natural that some values may have something in common, but I don't think they can be simply compared.

They really do have the same quality in the live performance recording that are in the MVs, which given how much they keep trying to push what they can do, is impressive! Another fun live show to watch is Freedom. They have said that it is their favorite song to perform and watching them goof around while playing, it seems to be true. One of the only rare days in seven years that I haven't listened to Band-Maid at home or in the car was the day I went to see them live! And a thing about the "Gimmick" - As Maidiacs know, Miku (who worked at a maid cafe), wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip "poor tortured artists" clothes... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done!
    Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination may be working. Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid "Gimmick" and all!

      Absolutely correct, Tom. The 'maid image works to differentiate them and allow them to make an initial visual impact, bur 'gimmicks' can only take artists/bands so far.
      To truly ascend to the upper rock pantheon, the band has to deliver the goods... and in the most creative and connected way, so the audience never leaves disappointed. I am probably even understating their collective abilities, stunning creativity, their obvious love and respect for each - no BS Ego Trips to destroy their outstanding interpersonal harmony {the Band comes first}, understanding of their craft (and make no mistake - these women operate on the highest talent plane of existence...) that hardly any performers from our Lowest Common Denominator current 'popular music' industry are even remotely capable of...!
      Band- Maid do this in SPADES...and Hearts...Diamonds...hell. the whole damn deck...!
      The treat their fans/audiences with love, consideration, and respect, and it is reciprocated to the highest degree.
      Band-Maid (for ROCK music) and Lovebites (for Metal) are my two absolute favourite music purveyors extant!!

    The first time I ever saw them I will admit I didn't "get" the maid costumes. I figured that they might some "put-up band" and that a promoter thought up the idea of having a group of hot babes wearing French maid outfits. But then I found out that the rhythm guitarist had worked at a "Maid Bar" and thought it would be the height of incongruity to have an all maid rock band. It was she who recruited the other members of the band. The lead vocalist was the last recruited and she was only member who balked at the maid uniforms ("I am NOT wearing an APRON!")
    I now look at their Band-Maid outfits as being like Kiss's stage make up and regalia, Slipknots' costumes/masks, The New York Dolls' drag, and, of course, Alice Cooper's stage persona. The maid outfits are pure show business and the band controls what they wear on stage. It's their Brand. They are SELF - MAID. They've only ditched the maid outfits on a few occasions. They did an acoustic Christmas 'serving' last year (beautiful!) and a few years ago they released a video as BAND_MAIKO on April Fools day where they performed in full Geisha regalia (AWESOME!). The Geisha video starts with Miku (rhythm/vocals) doing caligraphy to soft, traditional Japanese music, calmly writing out:

    The April Fools' joke is that it means "WORLD CONQUEST" which seems to be a recurring theme in their songs.

    That were two songs they did not wrote by themselves... Since the MV "Alone" they are writing the songs on their own, mainly Kanami (lead guitar) and since this song her solos are BY FAR better, because she gives herself enough room for it. What really impresses me about her is the variety of styles and that her solos are always melodic and add something to the songs not just shredding out of her mind, that´s really taste- and respectful towards the other maids. Nice you enjoyed it, it gets even better from there. What´s really rare these days are instrumentals, so maybe you wanna do something like this? It´s Onset (live) on their official channel of course. Have a nice start into the week everyone and Greetings from Germany!

    Another excellent reaction! One thing about Kanami, she prefers to write her solos the way she feels they best fit the song. Unlike most guitar players (guilty myself), she doesn't feel the need to show off. She does tend to favor the Pentatonic scale, but will venture into other modes when she feels the need. She has been known to do the gratuitous Arpeggio sweep ("Afterlife").

    I think Kanami stays within her assigned bars when doing her solos. Of course, she writes most of their music scores, especially the riffs (kanami = riff machine). On many occasions, she is shredding the whole song in the background. You just got to listen intently in you right ear. To me, Kanami is a team player that plays for the others, like Akane (drums) who holds down the rhythm section with Misa (Bass). Both are doing some major work, without too many solos, if any. It shows in their latest release, "Unseen World." It's like the Akane show, Po!

Thing is the song "Play" was their original Onset. But, Saika "lead vocalist" loved it so much that she convinced Miku "rhythm guitar, backing vocals" to work with her to add lyrics to it.. So, it became the song "Play".. Kanami "lead guitar" then had to compose the new Onset they use now..

    Band Maid are the most adorable musical badasses on the planet. The lead guitarist, Kanami is very influenced by Carlos Santana, who actually does quite a bit of single note speed picking. Many people do not hear his influence. She stated that his guitar heals her mind. This is one of the dominant traits when soloing, so if you're not a fan of that technique, you may not care for much of her lead work. Personally, I love it.

    • @OtobokeGaijin6218
      @OtobokeGaijin6218 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kanami has credited Santana as an influence, but arguably a bigger influence has been the jazz-fusion guitarists. One of those was Babymetal's backing band Kami Band's lead guitarist Mikio Fujioka, who died in 2018. Both Akane and Kanami have credited Fujioka with giving them advice about the music business, and in Kanami's case he turned her on to the jazz-fusion players (Holdsworth, McLaughlin, Di Meola, et al) because he was into them. The sophisticated harmonies Kanami gets in her arrangements likely come from that influence.

    Whoever said the Maid costume thing was gimmicky has missed the whole point of Band-Maid. It's the juxtaposition of the maid costumes and hard rock music that makes it work. Miku, the rhythm guitarist and 2nd singer worked in a Maid cafe and had this idea of having rock music played by maids. It's really brilliant.
    One of the many things I love about Kanami is that, if you see any BM interviews, she is this very innocent, quiet type but then she gets a guitar in her hands and her personality totally transforms.

    I think Kanami demonstrates restraint during her solos. Kanami could probably shred for bars but chooses not to, this in contrast to hair metal of the 80s or Metallica. I think we got so accustomed to Mustaine or Hammett shredding for half of a song.

    You just describe the "GAP", the difference with what you see and expect and what you actually hear. Miku, the rythym gt/vocal, created the band with this in mind. It is great that you picked up on it so quick and didn't think of it as only a gimmick. Kudos to you!
    You started out with one of their classics with Thrill and moved on to a heavier song with Real Existence. I would recommend trying out one of their ballads such as Daydreaming, then going to their heaviest song Rinne and finishing up with their live of Domination. You will be able to hear how versatile this band is while keeping to their Hard Rock Core.

    You've taken another step on your journey. May I recommend an instrumental, 'Onset', as the next live performance to watch -- th-cam.com/video/mVrN-j_Uc0U/w-d-xo.html
    Also, "The Gap" is what you are referring to when you talked about their appearance vs their sound. Completely intentional, created by Miku, the band founder, rhythm guitarist, backing vocals, main lyricists, and PR guru. Po!

    @jimr4354 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Nice compliments for the band. They really are awesome live. Miku on rhythm guitar and backing vocals thought of the concept after working as a maid in Tokyo in her early 20’s (she’s 28 now). It’s a brilliant idea. The outfits capture your attention then their music blows you through the roof.
    As you see here,The Maids are not your average J pop band,they’re the real deal.
    Highly talented musicians in 1 form or another.
    Individually it’s Kanami,Misa and Akane who really highly skilled. Some of the best female musicianship in the world. Miku learnt guitar from Kanami. (Note she doesn’t play in Thrill in 2014).
    Kanami on lead guitar though is the truly gifted one.Like Akane and Misa,she is a multi instrumentalist but her real skill is her guitar work and song composing. Real Existence isn’t her composition. This song was from their full album New Beginning which produced so many singles and great songs. Thrill was the opener,Don’t let me down (saucy lyrics!) and Shake That (great song,only slideshow clip).
    Kanami has written all of the band’s material since 2017. She is a genius at composing great 3 to 4 minute masterpieces with great hooks,melodies and interweaving genres within and between songs. Ironically,the band’s first label didn’t like her original work.
    Their current label is doing an excellent job promoting the band with 5 MV’s in 3 months and 2 virtual performances.
    Re the guitar solos here,Kanami’s really concentrates her solo work. Nothing over the top minute plus shredding. For sure better in live performances but the band now has over 100 tracks and playing long solos only lessens the time for more songs. Currently around the 22 mark. There’s a heck of a lot more that fans would like to hear. Over 2 hour shows now but be pushing Saiki in particular for a 3 hour performance. She had throat surgery in 2018 so has to manage her vocal work in live shows with mid show breaks with Miku entertaining or singing lead. Saiki was found through an agency at 20 as Miku’s voice wasn’t strong enough to lead the vocals. Their harmonies are amazing. Just listen to About Us.
    Seriously do yourself a real favour. Listen to more of their material. As a musician,you’ll learn to appreciate how good these women are at their speciality. The production team do a wonderful job in mixing their studio and live work. Then there’s the lighting.
    No more highlighted than in Onset live in 2018. It one heck of a jam session with wonderful tapping from Kanami. The lighting is superb.
    Never discount these ladies. They’re some of the most talented female musicians on the planet.
    Japanese millennials are very much like them in real life. Look at the English subtitle interviews. Quite shy and reserved though not Miku and Akane!
    As you see here,the Japanese are very much influenced/intrigued even by the west and have been for decades. Many influences from the 70’s and 80’s.
    That’s what makes The Maids so unique. That quintessential crossover of east meets west.
    There is so much Ying and yang in the band. Whether it’s the look and the music,Miku and the sound or just the ballads with the metal.
    Here’s a list of songs to prove that fact.
    Daydreaming (Miku’s beautiful backing vocal after Kanami’s solo,it’s a power ballad)
    Rinne (completely the opposite!)
    Bubble (really clever intro and outro with alternating guitar riffs,Kanami magic)
    Warning (1 of their latest,frenetic,great MV)
    Manners (another recent release)
    All MV’s
    For more live material
    Don’t you tell me for Misa and Kanami play off solos)
    Freedom for Akane drum solo
    Domination
    Turn me on
    Check all of these out with reactions and watch your subs and hits soar..
    There’s a reason that The Maids are liked in 66 countries and it’s not only their looks.
    They’re brilliant musicians and the song composing highlights that so much.
    Hopefully the ladies will achieve the mass market success they deserve. They have a major niche following now and once they gain greater exposure to the American market in particular will they be truly appreciated. Let the music do the talking. It says it all.

    Miku didn't really play when she started the band, so she assembled the best, most crazy-talented players around, and then fired herself as lead singer and found Saiki for that. And the end result is the hottest, hardest charging rock bands on Earth. And they never slow down- quarantine? Fine, we'll just practice more and harder and drop a new album that KILLS! It's not so much a gimmick, as it is their uniform. It's just what they wear. But it's based on "The Gap" in that Miku (Rhythm, backing vocals) worked in a Maid Cafe and had an idea of cute maids melting faces with rock music. So "The Gap" is the difference between what you expect when you see cute girls in maid outfits vs what you GET - which is badass rock music.

    Fun facts about Band-maid. Miku Kobato founder of Band-maid Could not play guitar when they started. She was going to sing. But when the voice does not work for the music they are going to play, you have to look for another vocalist, and learn to play the guitar yourself. Kanami (guitar player) is her teacher.

  • @Willywin
    @Willywin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Lol... Trust me the Maid Outfits are not a gimmick, well not for the sake of it - the founder of the group Miku was working in a Japanese Maid Cafe when she formulated the idea of a Rock Band dressed as Maids - she calls it the Gap - the difference between what you see and the Music they play - its quite deliberate. The more recent Maid outfits (they have evolved over time) also reflect the personalities of each band member, Miku the bouncier less shy more outgoing member and main spokesperson and marketeer of the band - for her its a case of the more frills the better, Kanami (lead guitar) is the main composer and for her a more plain work like maid outfit to reflect her work like personality. Akane (drummer) her maid outfit is based on comfort and convenience for drumming and is quite sensible just like her organised personality as Band leader - wide loose sleeves and shorts. Akane did wear a little hat but I believe Miku took it from her saying her hair was too nice to be hid (but that's just hearsay). Misa (Bass) not really a fan of the apron and frock elements of the maid look, easily the most shy member of the band she prefers an all black maitre d look. Saiki lead vocals, also a band spokesperson, is the same only her maitre d outfit has much more detail, layers and sparkle. But what a boring place the world would be if we had bands without gimmicks - ACDC, KISS, Twisted Sister, Alice Cooper - showing my age lol... All I can say is this band has restored my faith in rock.

    • @jacobusderottmann1000
      @jacobusderottmann1000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The little hat was originally assigned to Misa. She didn't like it so Akane tried wearing it. Akane stated in an interview that it was too much trouble to keep in place so she dropped it.
      Some fans are nostalgic about the little hat, but I'm not. I would agree that Akane's hair flying free is a beautiful thing.

    Nice reaction. The lyrics of "Real Existence".
    That doll is taking over my head without permission
    Into the reality of this game, Am I not tamed to do it?
    You always seem to get rid of your state of loneliness
    Because it is seriously impossible that the answer comes very slowly
    Oh baby, more necessary it is play that we neglected
    Such a good woman, she is not real
    Show me your way to satisfy Let’s get to play more, feel so nice
    If you want to love each other in a more passionate way, It’s all right
    Hug both your lonely freedom and your virtual image
    I’ll take your breath away If you just open your mind
    No No No….
    As we speak it reminds me looking at that beautiful sunset and the roadsite trees with you
    That new building was built in only one year or so
    The clock of this town today is moving, intensely like a cursor
    Are both the love and the internet the result that the truth has a bug?
    Oh darling, catch firmly the ambiguous days that you cannot sleep
    That heart without make up that you know
    Just wanna say I love you, don’ t you know?
    I don’ t care what people say
    Even though I am moved by this little pain, come on, night
    It will disappear somewhere due to my negligence
    It’s not a fantasy I’ m just a lonely girl
    No No.. .
    Oh baby, the more necessary it is the play of our shy secret
    That kind of woman does not exist
    Show me your way to satisfy Let’s get play more feel so nice
    If you want to love each other in a more passionate way, what can I…
    Just wanna say love you, don’t you know?
    I don’t care what people say, even though I am moved by this little pain, it is all right
    Hug both your lonely freedom and your virtual image
    Someday I’ll be by your side, it’s the reality
    Let me go….

      @@SongsandThongs - He also asked to take a picture with her, which they did. She posted it on her Twitter account.
      This was in November 2016 following Band-Maid's performance at an awards show in Tokyo. She got a message asking to meet with him backstage and take a picture. She thought it must be a joke, but no, it was him. He had some kind words regarding her performance and in typical humble Japanese fashion, she promised to (continue to) do her best.
      There is a rumor among Maidiacs that he compared her to Bonham, but no one can point to any certain support for that. But the meeting and the picture definitely happened, at Page's request.
      I would love to know what he thinks NOW, as he was impressed then.

    Luckily for us rockers no country is keeping the flame of rock burning brightly quite like Japan. The number of great bands is staggering, the level of virtuoso musicianship is ridiculously high and the number of kick-ass/bas-ass female rock musicians and all female and women-fronted hard rock and metal bands is unrivalled anywhere else in the world. Women in metal in Japan is a tradition that goes back to the 1980s and the band Show-Ya.

    Whoever said that their "costumes" are a gimmick, clearly are clueless about BAND🎀MAID's origins. They are Japanese maid-cafe UNIFORMS, not sexy maid costumes. The band's founder, Miku, worked at a maid-cafe when she got the idea to start a band. This is what she wore to work. Not a gimmick, a UNIFORM. What would you call them if they quit wearing maid uniforms, BAND-BAND?

    Kanami always try to make a solo "memorable", not impressive technically. Someone said she is a living cheat code to guitar playing since she makes it sound so better without using guitar gymnastics. Then again, I heard so many guitarists trying to cover her and it never sounds the same.
