I don't always listen to 'Bat Out of Hell' - but when I do, so do the neighbours 🙂. Great choice you guys, this is one of the greatest opening cuts on an album ever, just grabs you and pulls you into the whole story. Peace and love from Canada!

Jim Steinman was the genius composer. Meatloaf brought the songs to life.

Don't forget Bonnie Tyler's _Total Eclipse Of The Heart._ Jim was the absolute master of the power ballad, but only a few artists had the vocal power to pull them off. :-)

That's why he was in Rocky Horror. The other singers that they auditioned weren't able to sing the lyrics so quickly while still enunciating.

Jim Steinman wrote the majority of Meat Loaf's material, but Meat Loaf was the perfect avatar for Steinman's work. A truly perfect duo.
According to the sleeve notes of the Rock 'n' Roll Hero compilation album that I have, when Steinman first heard Meat Loaf, he said "This guy is my voice! He should be singing Wagnerian rock opera!"
Different genre, but Elton John and Bernie Taupin is another great pairing.
Just like Elton John and Bernie Taupin, both good by themselves but magnificent together.
other people recorded some Steinman. the best not by Meatloaf was Bonnie Tyler and what she did with "Total Eclipse of the Heart". but really, a Steinman ballad needed Meatloaf to deliver it
Don’t know if anyone realizes it, but this album is currently the 6th best-selling album in history. It’s VERY good all the way through.

The album is one of THE best albums ever recorded. The whole thing is solid.
Jim Steinman was the legendary lyricist, Meatloaf was the legendary performer. And big up to Todd Rundgren for the legendary guitar/ motorbike sounds. Much love from England 🏴
Jim Steinmann was the composer of what you very accurately pointed out was Rock Opera. He composed most of Meatloaf's songs. They were high concept and made the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Steinman said referring to meat Loaf: "If you want 350 pound, heroic, Wagnerian Rock this is it." (paraphrased) Steinman is the long-haired piano player in the videos. The female singer in "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" was Karla DeVito who toured with Meatloaf and was a wonderful singer. However she was lip synching to Ellen Foley's vocals on the video. Ellen Foley played Billie Young the public defender in the early episodes of the TV show, "Night Court." Steinman also composed Bonnie Tyler's similar high-concept songs.
He also wrote Bonnie Tyler's song Total Eclipse of the Heart, which was written for Meatloaf but he turned it down and she killed it.

One does not "listen" to Meatloaf, one "EXPERIENCES" Meatloaf... The Whole Album is about a man and a woman's relationship. It goes, in order from this (a man dying in a motorcycle accident), the first song, to the memories of his life and his love. He did not write these songs, (the Piano Player did), but he embodied them like nobody else ever could.
I feel one of the most overlooked songs by Meat Loaf is You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth. From the beginning to the way it plays out it just plain cool.

When this album came out, everyone - even the most jaded critics - were simply blown away!
Jim Steinman is the songwriting genius behind all of Meatloafs best songs.
On this album, Todd Rundgren's production and arrangement choices are almost every bit as important as the original compositions. Not to take anything away from JS, but it was definitely a collaborative effort.
Jim Steinman was the musical and songwriting genius. He wrote all of the songs. Meat Loaf was the genuis singer. Jim is right there playing the piano. As a team they were amazing!

He truly takes you on a journey. When this album came out everybody had it. The funny thing is I'm 57 and still have the album that I bought when I was a teenager. RIP
I am 67 and still have my album plus the turntable to play it on. LOL
I've had at least 20 copies of it because when I lose one or it gets broken I go get a new one. Same with Eagles Greatest hits, Young Guns soundtrack and Simon and Garfunkel greatest hits.

Living in Argentina, I had to contact a record store to import the CD from the USA because I couldn´t find it here. Love both songs!

You have to check out "You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth", "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)", "Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through", and "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are". DAMN, the man loved long song titles!!
I was lucky enough to see him live twice when I was a teenager. I was about a decade younger than anyone else at the concert and couldn't care less. I sang at the top of my lungs the entire time and had no voice for the rest of the week. Most of all, I had NO REGRETS! He actually sang that well in concert too. It was a mind blowing experience and I feel truly lucky to have gotten to enjoy it live. Thank you both for sharing these reactions! 💓
Years back, Meatloaf did an interview, don't remember with whom, but, he told the interviewer, If I have the energy for a groupie after the show, I didn't perform good enough for the crowd. Give 110% then do more.........
Meat Loaf wasn’t just a man singing to an audience. He was a pure entertainer. He played to the camera as well as an audience. If you have ever had the opportunity to see Meat Loaf live…. You definitely walk away knowing you received your money’s worth. Because Meat Loaf left it all on stage , with every concert he preformed.

One Meat Loaf song that ends with absolute fire is "All Revved Up With No Place to Go"--you need a seat belt for the last 40-45 seconds. For a Female Friday, you can react to Cher's duet with Meat Loaf, "Dead Ringer"--well worth the time.

That is called an emotional wreck. Meatloaf just showed us that if you put every ounce of power and sweat into it you will deliver a great song that will leave you spent. No matter how many times I hear this song I think of what and incredible group of people that gave us this bombastic powerhouse voice that just radiates pure emotion and feelings. R.I.P. Meatloaf you will always be remembered for your music and acting.

the piano player in this video is the guy who write all meatloafs best songs and they were both musical theater people
The goal behind this song was to write and perform “the ultimate motorcycle crash song”. Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf definitely achieved that.
I know you recorded this reaction on the day he died, and to hear you (Jordan) interpret the lyrics and say “he didn’t make it” crushed me. I’ve long known the meaning of the song, but to hear him sing about his own death on the day he died … not to be insensitive, but… is theatrical in only a way Meat Loaf would want it.
I totally agree with you I think it's wonderful to play tribute to somebody who has passed away on the same day. We all played tribute to John Lennon when he passed away on a cold winter's night 12/8/80. I think that any great artist especially someone so well known as John Lennon would like to have his fans pay tribute to him on the day that he dies, by playing the songs that he is famous for. Meatloaf with me missed by a lot of people, we grew up with him.

If you listen to the piano and drums, that’s Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg of the E Street Band. Meatloaf and Steinman apparently loved the sound from Born to Run, and in 1977 Bruce was still breaking up with Mike Appel, couldn’t record, and they were available. Bat Out of Hell was lightning in a bottle! And Meatloaf was a musical theatre trained actor. It shows.

Meatloaf was a musical drama genius. He was more that just rock n roll, he was having as much fun singing his music as you had listening to it.
It's a shame this one got held up in copyright issues, one thing I love about this song is the "Motorcycle" is pure electric guitar!
That motorcycle sound was actually the beginning of the guitar solo, played by producer Todd Rundgren. The album is a combination of the genius songwriting of Jim Steinman, the genius production of Todd Rundgren and the nigh-operatic theatricality of Meat Loaf - the musicians from Utopia and the E Street Band (plus guests like Edgar Winter) also brought their skills.
First we had to have a world without Freddie Mercury - and now Meatloaf as well. Meatloaf will be another who no one will ever come near to how huge his voice and stage persona was, his like you only get once! RIP.

Just a note: In this video, which is obviously not a live performance, the "girl" is Carla Devito, who also toured with MeatLoaf on the BOOH tour and others.
On the album, the female vocals were performed by Ellen Foley, and on the album cover were credited to "Mrs. Loud." Ellen Foley also played public defender, Billy Young, on the second season of the NBC comedy "Night Court."

Not gonna write my usual book lol I just gotta say that this song floors me every time. If anyone ever asks "What makes you think Meatloaf is such a good singer" this is where I direct them. Meat left so much of himself on stage that he would literally pass out as soon as he finished. They kept oxygen waiting for him.
The man was a genius with Jim Steinmann. The two were to rock what Rogers and Hammerstein were to musicals.
When my sister and her husband are at the pub getting sloshed and meatloaf comes on, they stop and drag each other on the dance floor and sing top note, they are hitting near 60 and its the funniest thing. We love Meatloaf❤RIP.

Two songs you should put in your line up should be "For Crying out Loud" and "Heaven Can Wait". They are both beautiful in sound and meaningful in lyrics.

Chuck those songs are great but really this is "HIM" by far his best song, it is an epic & that should be reacted to afterwards, you have to hear the song in one go.

They collaborated on most of Meat's albums. You see him playing the piano in the video. He died about 9 months before Meat.
Next song has to be "I would do anything for love (but I won't do that." And just trust me, if you want Meatloaf at his most theatrical, watch the full length official video for that song!"
I have to add that it is Meatloaf with songs composed by Jim Steinman that made the music what it was. It was really a team. Meatloaf without Jim Steinman was not nearly as amazing. Sort of like the team of Bernie Taupin writing Elton John songs. Rest in peace to both of them.
They never did a full length video. Even the 'long' video cut out a good few minutes of the album version.

Without a doubt this would be the next best choice followed by 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.
To clarify though, Taupin writes the lyrics to EJ songs. Elton writes the music. While Steinman writes the music and lyrics but Meatloaf brings the rock opera's to life. Each Team is symbiotic bit also different.

Meatloaf learnt his stage presents by 4 years on Broadway with the rocky horror show and a few years before that with hair (ask your grandparents) and the whole album was written by Jim Steinman the guitar that sounds like a motor bike is played by Todd Rudgren. Meatloaf was also in the movie version of the Rocky horror picture show and sadly left us to soon but the brightest stars go out first. R.I.P MEATLOF. PS read the lyrics every track on the album is a story and a monster.
The woman that sings with him is listed on the album as "Mrs. Loud". It fits. She can hold her own with Meatloaf and they really worked well together.

The audio is the studio version... featuring Ellen Foley on female lead. They dumped her for Karla for the tour (where Karla did sing), and also for the videos - but kept Ellen's vocal track for the videos. @@dianachase63
The writer, Jim Steinman, wrote the song and was the gentleman on the piano. Jim passed away last April too.

For Crying Out Loud … those lyrics are more sentimental than dramatic, but just shows another side of Meat and Jim’s brilliance. That song would be at the top of my list for The Rob Squad to react to next.

In case you missed it, the woman who sings on Paradise bu the dasboard light is Ellen Foley. She sings on Bat out of Hell and the woman in the promo videos and who went with Meat loaf on the tours is Karla DeVito. Ellen Foley has a really intresting career of her own, look up her debut solso single "we belong to the night". It is perfection

No doubt about it, Meatloaf, back in his early years, was an absolute force of nature. Every band/singer have their pinnacle years, and for Meat Loaf, in his Bat out of Hell years, he was at his pinnacle. A true performer that delivered his absolute best.
Ah, Meat Loaf. Powerhouse performer, powerhouse vocalist, powerhouse of a man...and yet privately he was a shy person with social anxiety, who ran away from home as a teenager after his mother died.
Actually, Jim Steinman (seen at the piano) wrote all the songs, but Meat delivered them in a way that made you feel like you were right in that story with him. Both remarkable men in their own rights, but together they made magic. They'll both be a big miss.
Edit: and yes, Meat could remove a jacket like nobody's business.
Most of Meatloaf's hits were actually written by Jim Steinman, the guy playing the piano in this clip.
Also, the motorbike revving sound about 2/3 of the way through the song isn't a motorbike, it's actually an amazing guitar solo by Todd Rundgren.

I saw Meat live in the 80's, you are absolutely right, it's a performance, like a rock opera all the way through. Awesome
His best stuff was written by Jim Steinman, the stuff from Bat Out of Hell and Bat II, including this song. His song all have this theatric turn to them, and Steinman wrote them, ostensibly, to be part of a musical about a teenage Peter Pan Neverland.

This is the first song of the album. In my interpretation, this song sets up the rest of the album. Every other song is his life flashing before his eyes, before he takes his last breath. Again, the two main themes of the album - love and time. It is a concept album and it is meant to be listened to in order. So now you have to do the last song - For Crying Out Loud (You know I love you.). The two songs are perfect bookends.

The theatricality is inseparable from the music the way he and songwriter Jim Steinman did it. Their later videos capture that poignantly. "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" is a phenomenal example of this - he and Marion Raven are phenomenal, the music is beyond beautiful and the images stay with you. It's a musical masterpiece and short film.
You could always tell Meatloaf put so much feeling and emotion into his songs. It almost felt like I was feeling more than I was hearing when listening to his music.

That guitar solo is so much cooler than most people realize. Most people don't know that motorcycle sound revving up was actually Todd Rundgren making sounds with his guitar, and then he transitions it into his guitar solo. One of the coolest guitar solos because most people don't even know it's a guitar.

I believe the reason why he was so amazing was he concedered himself an actor first so everything was an performance not a song. He once said each song had a different person singing it and he had quarks or movements that put into each character.
He was also great on concerts. His voice sounds in concert just as great as it did in a recording studio. He gave it all! I saw him in the 2000’s so he wasn’t a young guy, but you couldn’t tell!
Absolutely amazing! Nobody did it, or will ever do it, like Meat Loaf.
