i admire broderick for sharing his varieties of insane technique while still resorting to passages that are pleasant to the ears. great humility as well.
I have never been more impressed with Chris Broderick, his dedication, skills, and passion. My main man is SRV, and my passion is blues. Has been for 37 years. Too bad about the immature comments here.
I'm 20 years old and have been playing guitar since I was 9 years old, I play everything from classical to death metal. And after 11 god damn years I still can't even dream of playing like this -.-
You know, I'm really not all that interested in learning guitar, but I can't seem to stop watching these videos. I would gladly take lessons from Chris.
I've been using a pick clip for over three years now and that thing he said about it making your pick hand more relaxed and close to the fret board is completely true. I'm not an arm picker anymore
it feels good to think that this legend was a simple kid like me that was amazed by simple things like tapping and scratching :D chris is my all time idol :)
Pick clips are pretty easy to make, all you do is take a dunlop thumpick, then you have 2 options. 1) use a scissor and some sanding paper to shape the pick part of the thumpick into the size and shape of a regular pick, only problem is the pick gets very thick. option 2) cut off the entire pick part, so there is only the part that goes around your finger, then take your normal pick, like a jazz 3 or something, and use some strong glue to attach it to the thumpick, works fine for me
@Nameless164 What Chris is using different, he uses a pick-clip, where you can place any pick of your liking in it; and that is very important. The thumb picks have been around for a while and I think you can find them in any major guitar dealer stores. Those come with a pick already and not replaceable, and may not suite your hand or picking style.
This nigga can probably play anything. That must be an amazing feeling to be able to play a new song you just heard right after listening to it for the first time. Thats bad ass baby !!
i have a jackson rr3 for 3-4 years now with 2 passive EMG's the guitar is almost perfect. you just need some alignment to the neck because it is a bit bigger
playin those scales with the right hand was awsome, i have got to learn that... just imagine what you could do if you used both hands like that, it would be batio shit on a 1 neck guitar
@Smishik Eh, if you listen to what he says about it, it really is an innovation. The thumb picks are shaped very differently, and don't work as well for alternate picking, which kind of kills the whole shredding thing. The one thing I'd be worried about with this thing is that you can't really alter the angle of attack... but then again most guitarists consider it good technique to use a consistent angle of attack.
@Ironb3rry & @tanreu - sorry, but I have played in orchestra's and bands for 40 years. A piano is a percussion instrument because the sound is produced by a hammer striking a string. As a matter of interest, a Harpsichord is classified as a stringed instrument, because the mechanism under the hood actually plucks the string... I'm not here to start an argument... just recognising an interesting point.
It's basically your run-of-the-mill thumbpick, but not quite. It is a little more flexible and adjustable, so it feels like a normal pick when you play with it. Normal thumbpicks tend to be very stiff.
i want one of those clips i use heavy glass picks - the weight gives my strokes a lot of momentum and then i dont have to tense up or push as hard.. i'm just sayin' nice clips
Everyone, that isnt a thumb pick!! Its a special made holder to hold his pick while he is 4 finger tapping since he has no fingers left to hold the pick. If you all watched until 3:00 he tells you all about it.
@Shadow0876 It's still called a percussion instrument...sorry to say but everybody says it's a percussion instrument. The fact that a piano is only played by being struck is why they call it a percussion instrument. A guitar can be played in many different ways other then a piano...
please note - you need to have the genetics that give you long long tree swinging, branch grabbing spider fingers that compared to the normal human hand, are freakishly long.
@vbandres chris is using Dunlop Sharpie picks (holder not included*g*) it's really crazy to play everything with your left and right hand when he is not playing guitar he is in the gym he should release his thumb-thing soon (i'm waiting...maybe after the american carnage tour?)
@benrainmaker You ever looked inside a grand piano? Just because a mallet strikes a string doesn't make a piano a percussion instrument. bassists slapping are still playing a string instrument.
i thought he said G major 7 arpeggio. makes sense. but i get your point too. hes tapping a G major 7 through a sequence of fourths. (that im still trying to decipher. i think ive got it tho. playing this on a gibson les paul his harddddd shit man.)
i admire broderick for sharing his varieties of insane technique while still resorting to passages that are pleasant to the ears.
great humility as well.
Jesus...I've never seen such control, this man is insane...
check out Tosin Abasi
I don't see how that's related to guitar but it's a weird coincidence, also quite weird that you know that.
Str8Faced Oh chris told me, told me old people with dentures can give head, quite well apperently too
Tosin abasi is amazing
But hes not an 8th finger tapper.
Different styles.
2:16 "so for simple things..."
...bruh
LMFAO I’m glad I’m not the only one who caught that comment 😂
He really needs to make a solo album.
You got your wish! He has just left Megadeth
I know!!
+VJ Escamilla Totally agree
I have never been more impressed with Chris Broderick, his dedication, skills, and passion. My main man is SRV, and my passion is blues. Has been for 37 years.

I'm 20 years old and have been playing guitar since I was 9 years old, I play everything from classical to death metal. And after 11 god damn years I still can't even dream of playing like this -.-
well he's been playing 3x as much as you.
Chris isn’t human with playing 🤣😭 super nice guy. Met him at a clinic. Great guy very down to earth.
You know, I'm really not all that interested in learning guitar, but I can't seem to stop watching these videos. I would gladly take lessons from Chris.
2:16 "So for simple things" *Runs up entire 2-octave scale with other hand*
fuck you, man... fuck you. XD
ahhahahahaahha
getting chris to do a column was the best thing guitar world ever did
I've been using a pick clip for over three years now and that thing he said about it making your pick hand more relaxed and close to the fret board is completely true. I'm not an arm picker anymore
wow....what he played was just awesome. its beautiful. and the pick thingy seems like and awesome idea, i want one to try it.
2:30 His right hand is faster and more accurate than my left hand !!
USELESS HANDS !
it feels good to think that this legend was a simple kid like me that was amazed by simple things like tapping and scratching :D
chris is my all time idol :)
"This first example here is a riff that I wanted to build..."
If this is a RIFF, I'm pretty sure I'd spontaneously combust if he played a solo idea...
Lmao

OMFG! he uses his right hand just to hit those notes! HE's AWESOME!
"Hi, I'm Chris Broderick. Throw away your guitar."
this gentleman is god tier
Chris can shred on a level that seems to be unattainable by your average, run-of-the-mill guitarist.
'I'll show you that slowly"
NOT SLOW ENOUGH
@Nameless164 What Chris is using different, he uses a pick-clip, where you can place any pick of your liking in it; and that is very important.

Awesome lesson. Appreciate the detailed explanations and in just plain basic words too. Thanks!!
Yeah, he has a link to where you can buy them on his website. They sold out in a day the first run but it looks like now he has way more available.
Chris Broderick is the man!!!!
@tanreu it's strings are struck not plucked so it's considered a percussion instrument...
This nigga can probably play anything. That must be an amazing feeling to be able to play a new song you just heard right after listening to it for the first time. Thats bad ass baby !!
@popotopo99 is that the thing that flips the pick up out of the way when you dont hold it down with your index finger?
Holy shit this guys out of his mind, best guitarist ever in megadeth's line up, i wish him good luck n hope he stays for a long while!
I want one of them pick clip things. Are they available in Canada yet?
that pick clip is genius. i want one
Musically it's, well, chaotic. But technique-wise it's absolutely awe-inspiring :O
tapping,arpeggios and speed...beast
Our concept of simple and his concept of simple are very different.
im confused, is this an interview for him to teach or an infommercial for his pick clip?
i have a jackson rr3 for 3-4 years now with 2 passive EMG's
the guitar is almost perfect. you just need some alignment to the neck because it is a bit bigger
Open question to all watchers. Does anybody know the name (kind) or the brand of the pick used by chris in this video? i'd like to get one.
playin those scales with the right hand was awsome, i have got to learn that... just imagine what you could do if you used both hands like that, it would be batio shit on a 1 neck guitar
@aurosne The 7th string is seldom used in this lesson. And if you do a lot of right-hand tapping like myself, the pick clip is a genius idea.
Chris Broderick - one of the guitarists you love to hate because of his amazing skills.
@galatonim
Most likely to amplify the AxeFX signal for the cabinet.
@Smishik

his right hand technique is crazy! And dont get me started on his left!
He should make more music like Jason or Yngwie. He is awesome in Megadeth but if he would make more neo-classic that would be so perfect.
Could someone tell me his guitar model? Looks amazing.
what is the thing he have in the pick (right hand) to hold the pick...
Dude...playing entire scales with your right hand...that's pretty badass >>
@Ironb3rry & @tanreu - sorry, but I have played in orchestra's and bands for 40 years. A piano is a percussion instrument because the sound is produced by a hammer striking a string. As a matter of interest, a Harpsichord is classified as a stringed instrument, because the mechanism under the hood actually plucks the string... is his pick clip available anywhere??
@brbbns1 I don't think it is actually a thumb pick, I think it is something that holds a regular pick that he came up with.
He said d major or t major?? O.o
D major
It's basically your run-of-the-mill thumbpick, but not quite. It is a little more flexible and adjustable, so it feels like a normal pick when you play with it. Normal thumbpicks tend to be very stiff.
i want one of those clips i use heavy glass picks - the weight gives my strokes a lot of momentum and then i dont have to tense up or push as hard.. i'm just sayin' nice clips
I was told a week ago that they were going to be making another batch of them soon...
Is his extra string a low B or a high A? Does anyone know?
@semilei its a thumb pick, every guitar store sells them for about $.50 - $1.50
Everyone, that isnt a thumb pick!! Its a special made holder to hold his pick while he is 4 finger tapping since he has no fingers left to hold the pick. If you all watched until 3:00 he tells you all about it.
where can you get that type of pick?
Anyone know where to find some of the thumbpicks Chris uses? I wanna try it out.
Anyone know where you can get those pick clips? Id like to try them
Does anyone now where you can find the music or tabs for these videos?
@VMP007 piano is infact percussion, cause the way you get sound is by hitting the strings.
i want that guitar, is it his signature model?
I want that pick lip. Im not gonna bust out with 8-fingered tapping, but i can see a shit load of benefits ill gain from using it.
@NickoTheGuitarist It's a Ibanez RGA Custom
anyone know where i can get a pick like his??
can someone tell me what's the name of the song in the intro music
When is Ibanez doing a Broderick signature? this thing looks dope!
Just ordered 2 pick clips, finally!
whwere do you get a sharpy pick?!
Where do i get that pick!?!
anyone please tell me what guitar is that? is it an ibanez or esp?
Does anyone know where I can buy that pick clip? CM Distro isn't restocking right handed picks.
What's that guitar he's slaying?
is there any tabs of the scales thst he plays on starting?
I want the pick clip! that's great!
@Shadow0876 It's still called a percussion instrument...sorry to say but everybody says it's a percussion instrument. The fact that a piano is only played by being struck is why they call it a percussion instrument. A guitar can be played in many different ways other then a piano...

Jackson best guitars above all, Im trying to get my hands on one right now.
@ac1013dc so basically, nevermore would add MAB, i would say the super shred trio would be broderick MAB and rusty cooley
@vbandres
chris is using Dunlop Sharpie picks
(holder not included*g*)
it's really crazy to play everything with your left and right hand
when he is not playing guitar he is in the gym
he should release his thumb-thing soon
(i'm waiting...maybe after the american carnage tour?)
"Many fingers tapping changes everything" come on chris keep up Dave does it ;)
All he needs now is a personal instrumental album and to start writing songs...I'm sure that he has many ideas....
"so for simple things" does something insane
is this a DVD or somthin _?
Muito bonito o solo, grande guitarrista !!!!!!
dude this guy shreds harder with his picking hand alone more than more guitarists lol
amazing!
@rorronator1 What about the harp?
I want that pick clip.
@tanreu It's a percussion instrument not a string
"So for simple things..." *crushes my hopes and dreams*
@benrainmaker
You ever looked inside a grand piano? Just because a mallet strikes a string doesn't make a piano a percussion instrument. bassists slapping are still playing a string instrument.
@butterknucklez yea i realized that just after i posted that. its just something that holds a pick tho, you could just use a thumb pick instead.
i thought he said G major 7 arpeggio. makes sense. but i get your point too. hes tapping a G major 7 through a sequence of fourths. (that im still trying to decipher. i think ive got it tho. playing this on a gibson les paul his harddddd shit man.)
Anybody know what kind of pick that is he's using?
its a pick clip
@W4R yes, well, with your picking hand at that speed and accuracy it isn't really the easiest thing for the average guitarist
@HitaroX but in the end it's about the music. difficulty or complexity does not equal quality.
Chris you Kick ass!!! God Bless you !!
What a very nice seven string Fender!
@Vercingetorix most of the video was about explaining his pick and his right hand technique though.
Considering that this video came out 2 years ago, I guess that pick clip never became a commercially available item...
