  • Different characteristics of roller skate wheels will affect your roll. In this video I cover roller skate wheel width, height and durometer. Thanks for watching and subscribing! Some of the wheels covered in this video are no longer in production, but you can apply the concepts of width, height and durometer from the examples and apply it wheels you're considering!

    I just saw a girl on instagram brake her skate in a skate park on day 4 of learning how to skate, and someone in the comments said that her skates are made for outdoors, and I bought skates two weeks ago and immediately panicked cause I had now idea there was a difference and there's no skate rinks in my city so I can only skate outdoors 😳 luckily I have good outside wheels, thanks for explaining this in detail, it meant so much!

    I'm new to the roller skating scene but my skateboard and longboard game is quite strong I actually worked at a skate shop for a few years. I just wanted to chime in and drop a lil bit more info for the first time buyers. Wheel shape has alot to do with what kind of traction you will be able to maintain wider wheels with sharp edges are amazing for getting really tight carves and feeling secure in them but the average tunnel type wheel are also more prone to having their edges torn up by rough roads altho the effect on its ride are pretty minimalistic. Where as your more round edge wheels will at a higher durometer will be great for powerslides both indoor and outdoor as well as dragging your foot to break like you would on breakless inlines these tips are only really useful if you plan on riding aggressively or ride so slolom carving but it's worth taking note of cause how they handle verys quite a bit. Another tip is the wheels with a large solid hub are designed to allow you to ride a softer wheel without having as much rolling resistance wheels with an air core function in a similar manner being harder but with a lil added absorption. In my experience so far I've been loving abec 11 outdoor for controlled speed, carving and light aggressive riding and roller ones for indoor rythm/jam skating they're very hard and I love the ability to have controlled slides while doing grapevines and the like

    Thank you so much! I used to roller skate indoor/outdoor all the time as a young adult. Stopped for near 20 years. With the lack of skates available I ended up with skates that unfortunately are low shoe type. Stated it was outdoor skates but the wheels are the largest in kind. Couldn’t figure out why as soon I went to try them in my garage that I immediately fell. As they are super slick which caused me to have zero stability even with proper skating techniques. This was very helpful. I think I am just going to buy some new wheels. This definitely helped immensely in narrowing down the best choice needed! ❤️

    Nice selection of wheels! I have been considering going to the Route 70mm wheel but you may have talked me out of that. I'm a little worried about smacking the wheels together of both skates causing a crash. I currently roll on Radar Energy wheels for commuting in the city and distance skating on Rail-Trails. They are relatively narrow 32mm, 78a, 62mm tall. They work really well for me so now I will just stick with them. Thanks for helping me not waste money! Next time you replace your 62mm wheels you should try them. They also grip really well on wet streets. Cheers!

    • @MartinaakaCherri
      @MartinaakaCherri  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, if you're currently rolling on Radar Energy a wide wheel will definitely throw you off. Since filming this video I've switched to an 86a Sonic for outdoor and I love them! They're the same width and height as a Radar Energy - hard enough to get good speed outside, but soft enough to still roll over rough surfaces. Thanks for commenting!

    • @joeybike2
      @joeybike2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correction: Mr Radar Energy wheels are 65mm tall when new, not 62mm. 62 is when i replace them.

    I've found that, even as a beginner, I prefer something shorter but around 84A for outdoor. The 78As are just too grippy and slow, even though my sure-grip boardwalks are a fair amount taller and wider than my preferred wheels. It should be noted that I'm just slow all around, though lol. Just not AS slow on 84A.

    • @msericaplease
      @msericaplease 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for saying this... I’m going to get 84A after skating outside on 78A for months

    • @BucketCharlie
      @BucketCharlie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@msericaplease do it! I feel like 60+mm 84s would be absolutely fantastic. I was on suregrip aerobics (84A/57mm) and boardwalks (78A/65?mm), and then got some energys (78A/57mm). I still prefer 84s. If I could get some 84A/62-65mm wheels, I'd be ecstatic. I still do love my boardwalks, though.

    Great video. I am a beginner, my question is what would be recommended for a heavier skater?

    • @MartinaakaCherri
      @MartinaakaCherri  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on your skating surface! You can also choose higher durometers if you feel the lower durometers are keeping you from getting speed. You can go as high as 88s for outdoor wheels. If you get wheels with an aluminum hub, there will be less flex and will roll more.

  • @oyamiwa
    @oyamiwa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thank you Cherri for this information. I would like to try the Radar Pure wheels. I wouldn't call myself a beginner skater but I recently returned to skating from not skating for many years. Even then, I wasn't aware of all the technical skating terms and mostly skated forwards lol. Now I'm up for the challenge to skate outdoors. I'm learning about edges, the different ways to stop and I would like to learn some of the skills you in other skaters teach. Today I skated my 4th trail which taught me a lot about what I don't know, and need to keep practicing. My current set-up (another new term for me lol) Moxi Lolly's with original plates and Radar Energy wheels 78a 31mm x 57mm. Would I be jumping ahead of myself purchasing the Radar "Pure" or Moxi "Fundae wheels?

    • @MartinaakaCherri
      @MartinaakaCherri  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! Thank you for commenting! Unfortunately Radar Pure wheels are no longer made (sorry! The video is 3 years old). Radar Energies are a great outdoor wheel - that's what my son rolls on.
      As for switching to Fundaes for outdoor, I am happy to share my experience with that wheel so you can decide for yourself.
      In comparison to the Radar Energy, Fundaes are quite a bit harder. If you are a beginner skater, you may find them uncomfortable on rough surfaces (vibration) and if you skate slowly, you may "lurch" when you hit small debris.
      In my experience, Fundaes are a great trail wheel if you are already confident on trails, are comfortable in navigating street debris and/or skate surfaces that are smooth. These wheels need momentum to navigate the streets well.
      Hope that gives you some ideas regarding the Fundaes.
      If you find your Energies are too slow for you, but you like their softness, you may want to consider going up in size (height). A taller wheel will give you more speed.
      Hope that helps! :)

    I am skating outside for the first time since I was a kid due to Covid-19. My wheels Sure Grip boardwalk outdoor wheels 65mm, 78A hardness. I feel like my wheels slide out from under me. What the most stable, slowest roll out wheel good for an outdoor super beginner?

    • @MartinaakaCherri
      @MartinaakaCherri  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      detweils if you’re looking for something a little slower, you’ll want to go with less height. But less height will also mean you will feel more bumps - so it’s a trade off either way. Radar Energies come in a 57mm that may provide you with a bit more control.
      Before you go buy new wheels, I would give your wheels a couple more tries. Outdoor wheels have a different sensation - because of their height and width, they tend to be a bit heavier and the rebound may throw skaters off initially. Anything new gets easier with practice! Hope that helps :)

    I just tried the Road Hogs, 78A 66x42, I was not happy at all with the speed of the roll. Too squishy, I was multiple mph lower than sure grip aerobics, and it took more effort to keep speed, but I was impressed with the amount of grip on wet/snowy/icy boardwalk. I'm going to try Atom Poisons next, hopefully I'll like the roll better.

      Martina aka Cherri Thanks for replying! I’m pretty torn on whether to invest in a Lolly or Panther Moxi skate. I believe the panther is just a bunny boot with suede. Wondering if you recommend one more than the other 😬

    Can you make a video about bearings? I am confused about finding the right bearing size that will fit my skates axel.
    Someone said to measure with a pencil by putting it in the axel. What? How?

    So this video was extremely helpful for me. Its seems that most outdoor skates these days come with 65mm wheels. As a beginner I have wondered if this was wise. I come from a longboard sales background and we generally sell boards with larger wheels to advanced long boarders and smaller wheels to beginners, so it surprised me that this didn't translate to roller skating. But now I see that it does, but this information is not widely available. I have been trying to learn to roller skate (outdoors) on 65mm wheels myself and feel they are very unstable. I am progressing though, so I wonder if I should try some smaller wheels or just stick with the 65s and maybe it will ultimately make me a stronger skater? Also a shame more companies don't make smaller soft wheels... Sorry for the long comment.

    I have the Blazer roller skates, the wheels are 62x38 mm and 78a, I’m actually learning for the first time and I don’t know if the wheels are good for my (as a beginner) because it feels heavy and i feel taller and kinda scares me hahaha but i want to know your opinion, are the wheels good for beginners? Have you try or know about the Blazer roller skates? I found this video very helpful in terms of wheels so in the future I can know more if I’m going to change them, thanks

      angelhbkghellen hi! That’s a good durometer, width and height. Right in the middle! If you have the $$ you might enjoy a smaller height in wheel. But if you’re just learning, you’ll likely grow out of it. Skates in general feel heavy to new skaters. I suggest to give your body time to adjust!

    Glad I came across this video. Very informative. Thank you. I am trying to get back into skating. Not exactly a beginner but still have a lot that I am interested in learning. With all of the wheels you displayed and described, could the bones reds fit all of them. Like would the bones be a universal fit to all of those different wheels?

    • @MartinaakaCherri

      Bearings are sold by axle size, not by how they fit in the wheel. All bearings should fit in the wheel, whether it be skateboard or roller skate. If you weren't told what your axle size is, it's probably 8mm - which is standard. Hope that helps.

    Could you do a similar video for indoor wheels? Thanks!

    • @MartinaakaCherri
      @MartinaakaCherri  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DrEnglander1999 the concepts are the same, except with indoor, the variety of surfaces require you to be more aware of your durometer. You need to choose the right durometer for your desired speed on the floor. EG: if you have a low durometer on a sticky floor, there will be more friction between the wheels and the floor, creating a “slower”’skating experience. On the other side of the spectrum, a polished concrete floor with hard wheels, will have you moving with very little effort but will also have more slide to your wheels. Because all floors, skating preferences and skating styles are different, it’s tricky to capture all that in a video. So my best advice is to know your floor surface and choose your width, height and durometer accordingly to help you achieve your desired skating experience. Hope that helps a little :)

    @4:08 why do you suggest the bigger outdoor wheel is for advanced skaters ? Most advanced skaters use 34-38mm phenolic wheels lol. Wood or fomacs clay wheels even.

    • @MartinaakaCherri
      @MartinaakaCherri  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! In terms of top speed and height, many skaters find them difficult to learn on. In fact, I had a skater in a lesson last night complaining that she felt "too high" off the ground and wants to look for shorter wheels. Of course, anyone can get used to anything with practice. You're right, wood and Fomacs are nice small wheels that are great for advanced skaters to do intricate movements, but I probably wouldn't want those for outside lol I personally only use tall wheels when I'm going for long-distance outdoor endurance skates, where I want a fast top speed Choosing wheels for indoor skating is another topic on its own depending on what the skaters is doing. Hope that clarifies.

    I’m a beginner skater and I got the wheels you don’t recommend for outdoors but I am somehow learning better to skate? When I have smaller wheels I felt less stable- in fact my indoor skinny ones ALWAYS made me feel like I was about to fall. Is this because of something or just skating style? I’m honestly curious why I feel better with a “clunky” wheel.

    • @MartinaakaCherri

      commercialskits if you’re a new skater, wider wheels will feel more stable. It’s all personal preference! Use what works best for your skill and style. Have fun!

    I just preordered some skates and on the specs it says it is equipped with 52mm 82A urethane wheels with internal hub and ABEC-7 bearings.
    I would assume that's more of an indoor wheel so I went online to find new wheels and cant seem to find 52mm replacement outdoor wheels. What would you recommend? Can I go higher to like a 54mm? (I'm new to skating and really have no idea)

    • @MartinaakaCherri
      @MartinaakaCherri  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rustic Bones a lot of people like Radar Energies. They have 3 different height sizes. The taller the wheel the longer your rollout and the smoother your ride. Choose a height based on your typical surfaces and what you want to do.
      That being said, I skate 85a outside. I would try your stock wheels first and see how you like them.

    Can you review about radar energy 57mm,62mm,65mm? I can't decide which one fit for my outdoor wheels. I want buttery cruise but easy to do transition n spin etc on rough asphalt

    • @MartinaakaCherri
      @MartinaakaCherri  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No specific review needed, because you can use the wheel criteria in the video to get a good idea of how they will perform. If you want a buttery cruise, go for a taller wheel. There is more surface area to go over bad pavement and you’ll get a long rollout. Transitions and spins can be done on any wheel. Truthfully, any skill can be done on any wheel if you practice. But a taller wheel will have less agility so it may take some adjustment to get spins. Many prefer the shorter wheels for tricks, because they are lighter and more agile.
