Important to note that the G.91 is the Y model, which had two afterburning engines compared to the regular G.91R which had a non afterburning single engine. The R model is in line with F-86 and MiG-15 performance.

@@blown533 Yeah Wikipedia says it (G.91Y) was introduced in '66 and used by the Italians until '94, how accurate is that? IDK, but there is a reference to the Aeronautica Militaire, and while the page won't load for me, I'd be surprised anyone would lie about such mundane and inconsequential details.
If you have to have Italian go first generation with the Aermacchi MB326
G 91 R was a late 50 fighter bomber, not a fighter or an interceptor. The Y version, even if employed sometimes by Aeronautica militare as interceptor, it was assigned to the fighter bomber role, because it had not a radar for night/bad weather use.
This isn't exactly made in 1950 but in 1955. The JAS 35 Draken, amazing climbing rate with a speed of mach 2.1 being able to outrun most jet's of its time.
I don't think it was operational at -55.

You used the wrong F-84. You should have used the F-84F Thunderstreak, not the earlier Thunderjet. The later P-80's coould outrun the early F-84 but not the F-84F and later.

Nope, if you want to stay with first generation jets the first model thunderjet was correct, granted this contest was a mess as there were 2nd and 3rd generation jets with after burners and level supersonic speed capabilities, totally botched comparison, but this is grim reapers and they act before thinking events through.

Important to remember that the G.91 Yankee used in the video is substantially different from the original R version. The R was a ground attacker with slight recon capabilities, on the other hand the Y variant was two engined, had it's capabilities upgraded and so the flight performance
Exactly. The original G-91R was a single engine attack plane from the 50s, the G-91Y as used here was a 60s, TWIN engine attack plane, with AFTERBURNERS! No comparison with the other fighters in this race.

the G.91Y/YS used in this video actually uses the same engines as the Northrop F-5A/B/C Freedom Fighter. That's why it has such insane acceleration, even more than the MiG-19, its not supersonic but has supersonic capable engines.
Gosh, now I have to see how the F101 Voodoo would stack up. It was capable for Mach 1.72 by the end of its lifespan. Reconnaissance, tactical, nuclear and electronic warfare versions were all strapped to this airframe. soft spot

The AVRO all weather interceptor built in the 50s should have been tested. CF-100 is the model number by memory.
Of course that assumes DCS has it.

No, I meant the CF-100 Canuck, best and only all weather interceptor when it came into service. Here’s the LaWiki page.

It's a bit of a stretch, the few that were built were flying with no fire control systems, the unit was replaced with concrete, into the last few months of '58, when it was cancelled. But still a cool plane so a 'what-if' would be awesome, same as the TSR2
F-86 went supersonic in a dive. F-100 was the first American jet to be Mach 1 capable in level flight. See Frank Everest's autobiography.
I would love to see if the F-100 flown differently would have a chance at beating the MiG-19. Also throwing my hat on the F-106 train.

I wonder why the English Electric Lightning is excluded.
If you're not familiar with it, it could climb vertically from takeoff, could achieve 50,000 feet per minute climb rate and had a service ceiling above 60,000 feet. Add a top speed of Mach 2.3 and it really leaves little doubt of the outcome.

FireDad … nice going .. flying the same planes as the Misty flights in Vietnam in late 1969 & 1970. I’ve got a relative that flew them!!
When I was a kid, my parents and I were having a cake at the Cologne airport restaurant with a nice view over the airport. Two Fiat G91s which the Bundeswehr had as ground attack fighters taxied to the north end of runway 15, took off in formation, went into a shallow climb roughly until the limits the airport's area, then pulled up and climbed into the cloud base vertically. One's got to respect those planes, they obviously were beasties of sorts! That was in the mid-Seventies.

@@xsu-is7vq I've been researching some of the history for upcoming videos. Aircraft aren't a luxury that you treat yourself to, they're a product that customers buy! The industry ran out of money because nobody was buying its aircraft. There was massive over-involvement by post war socialist British governments in the industry calling all the shots, with inevitable consequences. It's enough to make you weep!

Cap, the new B-52 upgrade has been announced and it is getting the same radar as the Super Bug plus new engines and other goodies. Now you need to model a B-52J with AIM-260, AESA radar and data link . . . Just imagine how many of those suckers it could ripple off at different targets all at once. (Obviously this isn't really the USAFs plan for such an upgrade but still).

I know it didn't go into service until 1960 but the EE Lightning was first flown in 1954. It would of pissed all over these.

How about the F-101 and F-102?
The F100 was all over the airfield before he finally got off the ground. Looked like he blew out his landing gear and had to reset perhaps.
Excellent series and loads of fun. As an evolution, how about a squadron of bombers and the prize goes to the one who shoots most down? Any era appropriate loadout allowed but the pilot has to show evidence for that loadout if challenged. Fuel and countermeasures up to pilot choice but they lose if they run out of fuel!
I really wish they will make a J35 Draken some day, I think it would make a great addition to DCS.

The single-engined G91 was a bit underpowered. So I'm not sure that its twin-engined versions' acceleration and rate of climb are accurate? Both the F-84 and F-100 were known as groundhogs because they took a long time to take off and get up to speed. The F-84 has a top speed of 622 mph while the F-80 has a top speed of 590 mph. The F-80 has a better climb rate than the F-84 and aerodynamically was cleaner. But the F-84 had more engine power.

Too many 2nd and 3rd generation jets in your choices, there’s more than enough late WWII and post war jets available to make a good showing. You mention the SAABTunnan, Saab had a previous jet. The piston engine pusher Conversion SAAB 21R.

Cap may I put in a VVR (Valued viewer request) I would love to see something ala Top Gear special related where competitors have to fly between two points with refuelling. You can choose any plane. So do you choose speed with the penalty of slow refuelling, or do you choose burn rate and fuel consumption for less refuelling? Winner is the fastest from one airfield to another. Cheers Cap love the content.

The Hun's rate of climb is 114 m/s nearly four times faster than the G91at 30 m/s, I reckon the handbrake was still on that old warbird & it should have been hot on the heels of that jolly farmer !
I don't think he had his afterburner lit until well after feet wet.

Still love the F86.. the Air Force museum in Dayton, OHIO had a few 86s that were cool to look at.. F-100 super saber was not the greatest accelerator when it's at maximum fuel, when it's at maximum fuel is acts pretty much like foxbat or blackbird, but if the race were any longer it would've dusted the mig easily

No English Electric Lightening?
The normal G91 had one none afterburning Bristol Orpheus engine and was fast due to low weight but was kinetically weak. You used the G91Y which has two Afterburning J85 engines, same as the F5, which was still very light but it was ludicrously powerful for kts weight and at low altitudes and in a dogfight there was no Nato Fighter, period that could Match it, until the F110 engined "Big mouth" F16.
watch the G91 come out next week and GR will have to re do the video.

So, being an unknowing pleb, would the f100 initially staying low and focusing on picking up speed have helped it? Low speed climbing, as it looked to me as that plane was doing, didn't do it much good it seems.

They used them to take out v1 and v2’s in ww2 but u gotta be able to see and find them midair
@@Utubesuperstar V-1s, yes. Spitfires, Hurricanes, Mossies, Beaufighters, and Mustangs were used to shoot them down. Not the V-2. Those came petty much straight down from the stratosphere at supersonic speeds. The '40s radar sets couldn't detect them, and they couldn't be seen by eye.
The piston engined Shahed, certainly easily even with early WWII aircraft as slow as 190 knot top speeds, they basically have nearly the same flight programming as the V1 just much, much slower.
