    My snappy comeback to those who say it’s expensive: I spend $150 a month or less. I usually get draw drops. If you are watching this and believing that being vegan is expensive, let me help you. I personally am recovering from three foot surgeries and as you can imagine the medical bills are astounding. I used to be just like you, it’s too expensive, too hard, etc. However, when my health took a turn for the worst, I full plunge went vegan, honestly just to stay alive. The doctors can’t believe my progress and I’ve done this on a small budget. You can do it!

      I totally agree! My husband was told he would have to go on meds if we couldn’t get his BP, cholesterol and such down...I know it may sound strange to some but of course this made us worried for his health but we felt guilty as well about possibly having to use expensive medicines which is a burden to everyone as far as cost not just us, I mean we all have to pay for others health care. Anyway, through changing to a vegan diet his labs are now normal, lost 20 lbs and no meds! We are so happy. Congrats on your vegan journey as well!

      Amy Paige I recommend mastering Indian food (the vegan lovlie has a great channel) 70% of Indians eat no meat and 30% of those are vegan. I eat a lot of starches, legumes and rice. I am 14 and cook all myself and spend 20 of my parents dollars per week on groceries for just me. Dry to avoid any vegetable that is low calorie besides dark leafy greens (as you need the iron and vitamins to be healthy). I never buy organic, but that’s ultimately up to you.

    • @veggielovinaccountant
      @veggielovinaccountant 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amy Paige I thankfully don’t have any allergies. But I just have to keep my budget tight. I rarely get to buy the vegan fun foods. I pretty much just stick to Whole Foods. Example, this week I’m making carrot hot dogs and not getting vegan hot dogs. Also, there can be no food waste. I do miss lots and maybe soon I can start adding an item or two of fun, but so far it’s not happening. I also shop what’s on sale and in season to keep lower. Just some ideas.

    One more thing: Choosing organic is not only good for our bodies and the environment, but for the farm workers, the latter of which is usually a forgotten point. Thanks for the inspiration, y’all!

      I’m pretty sure it’s harder on the environment because of less yield + organic pesticides have to be used so much more often than traditional “chemical” ones. I personally wouldn’t stress on organic unless it’s a on very GMO food like soy. Organic soy and organic sugar is the only organic I willingly buy.

    • @blahlool
      @blahlool 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pesticides are a lot worse than GMO. I agree you should avoid non-organic soy/sugar/corn, but because of the massive amounts of pesticides they spray on, not the GMO's.

  • @kelseymark7929
    @kelseymark7929 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Absolutely! When I first went vegan it was more expensive only because I bought a bunch of vegan protein powders and all kinds of mock-meat options. Since learning what foods I like I've come to find out that my grocery bill has been cut into nearly a third of what it was before. I am starting my own garden this summer so I will be cutting down my food budget even more. It's amazingly simple and affordable to go vegan. I wish more people understood that.

    • @NikkiVegan
      @NikkiVegan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kelsey Symonds right? It can be so much simpler than people think...and still delicious! 💚💚💚

    • @kelseymark7929
      @kelseymark7929 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      NikkiVegan exactly! For some reason non-vegans always try to get mock-meat for me for meals they are providing instead of just a simple salad, sandwich or pasta (which I'm still greatful for, at least they are trying). I think people get so used to meat at every meal they forget you don't need meat or a meat substitute to have dinner. Buying meat substitutes make it seem more "difficult" and expensive than other available options. For example I literally had a package of ramen noodles with some nooch and frozen veggies for lunch. It probably cost me $1.50 tops and didn't require any meat substitutes. 🍜😋

    Wow I'm so happy Caitlin brought up the Dirty Dozen list, personally I have always bought Organic because I could always taste the difference vs. non organic and organic but I had never looked up the dirty dozen list to see which fruits and veggies were more contaminated. Very interesting! I'm happy to see you guys bring Caitlin on the show, I've tried tons of her recipes and they all turned out so yummy! As always awesome video guys! Keep them coming :)

    Ever since I went vegan, I feel like I've been able to get a lot more food for my money. Whenever I would buy a pack of chicken, I would be spending up to $8 every time, all the while I could have been getting four packs of tofu for the same price.
    P.S. Nisha, I love your shirt!

    I hear so many people talking about Veganism being expensive but I just laugh cause it's so not! You can eat filling, nutrient dense and protein rich foods for so cheap. Brown rice, beans, tofu, lentils, and whatever vegetables you want. I have a big family and they spend atleast 1/2 their grocery budget a week on just animal products. Veganism is cheaper and much healthier.

    While bananas have a thick skin that you don’t eat so it isn’t as important to eat organic, from a worker standpoint it is the most cruel utilizing slave and child labor. For me, if I can’t afford fair trade bananas, I don’t eat them

    • @TheBlacktressDiaries
      @TheBlacktressDiaries 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah unfortunately some foods still have other ethical dilemmas attached to them. Thankfully, fair trade bananas still don't tend to be super expensive, especially if you find them at like Aldi or Trader Joe's!

    • @angryowl5972
      @angryowl5972 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there’s a tendency to assume that in developing countries there’s a large incidence of unethical labor practices but it really depends on the country. Generally speaking if it’s coming from India its pretty hard to find manual labourers working in terrible conditions because labor laws are pretty strong and there’s a labor shortage at the moment there because of the growing college educated population. Because it’s pretty hard to find farm or factory workers you can bet that they’re treated pretty well. China on the other hand is a whole other ball game so I tend to avoid products that come from there.

    The main issue I have when someone says legumes rice beans are not expensive is non vegans can think and visualize someone eating just some legumes rice beans.
    This is why I would like more vegans to elaborate more and talk about other items that are not expensive, including herbs and spices some of which even an apartment resident can grow, to add to legumes rice beans.
    Here in California organic can be affordable at our local farmers markets and pick your own farms. Dislike vegan channels that do so many processed vegan foods, junk food videos etc.

  • @lururu
    @lururu 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that a lot of the "veganism is expensive" opinion comes from the belief that you need mock meats, which is just not true. But besides that, meat can be expensive too, and idk if it evens out or what but, uh, yeah

    I'm on a very low budget and my life coach says that being vegan is a waste of money. How can I prove that she's wrong?

    • @denise9926
      @denise9926 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Erin Wolfe I would go to a grocery store and do two lists, one with meat, dairy and your normal side dishes and one with vegan items like beans, lentils rice potatoes etc. I guarantee the vegan one will be less money and if u are focusing on just the vegan aspect you don’t need to add things that organic unless your comparison list with the meat and dairy includes organic. Also, there are a lot of TH-cam videos that give an exact breakdown of cost for eating vegan for a week you could use as an example. The biggest point I think u could make in my experience is the cost your life planner is not including which is long term health care costs. My husband and I are in our late 40’s and have no health problems and take no meds. Most of our friends our age who eat the standard American diet have to take meds daily for high blood pressure, diabetes and/or cholesterol...so your life coach should add this as a potential cost in the future not to mention loss in wages because of health problems. And... by the way, we are not those vegans that exercise everyday nor eat a lot of expensive things like superfoods or fancy powders. We are not thin either, both of us could lose a few but we are so happy, healthy and spend way less $ all around on this lifestyle. Lots of beans and legumes and buy produce in season (takes a while to get used to the beans if you know what I mean). Good luck!

    I appreciate all five of you great people. But I would like to make a point. If we want to save as many
    animals as possible, we need to give people permission to cheat and not be 100% perfect vegans.
    If someone goes over to their aunt’s house and eats a piece of non vegan cake, let’s let this person know
    that that happens. Afterwards, they can go back to being vegan. I would rather see someone be mostly vegan and occasionally eat something non vegan than decide it is too hard to be vegan and go back to full eating animals.
    This is not speculation. This is what is happening. The recidivism rate is very high. The vast majority of people who go vegetarian or vegan do not maintain it and go back to eating animals. The percentage of people that go back is so high, that I will not bum you out by telling you what it is.
    I am 62 years old and became vegetarian about 40 years ago and vegan close to 30 years ago. I have seen so many ex veg*ans over the years. In many cases it is because of this kind of scenario. They eat something not vegan with family or with friends, feel they messed up and decide that they can’t do it and give up on the whole thing.
    One time when I reassured a person new to veganism not to worry about being perfect she said, “ I’m so glad you said this because I was thinking it is too hard to be vegan.” Those were her exact words.
    Personally I don’t make exceptions. Being vegan is automatic for me and I will be vegan for life. But it is irrelevant that this is easy for me. I know that I am the minority. I saw this last week at a social event at someone’s house.
    I am much more concerned with saving animals than with vegan purity. And in the real world more animals are saved by allowing people to make exceptions than by promoting absolute purity.

    Really love the content on this channel. It has helped me along on making a choice towards veganism. However, the way in which these ladies talk seems so fake and disingenuous. I know this may not contribute in any valuable way but, please speak like grown-ups. All the extra sssses, and effort to sound like 16 year old phone sex operators really distracts from the great info being disseminated here. For what it's worth.

    So what I'm hearing is not necessarily healthier just not animal. This is the part of veganism that I don't buy into. If we're going to push compassion, have compassion on yourself too. It's not a better lifestyle if you're not doing the right thing for your own body first. Terrible.

      Erin Stratman I don't know what you are referring to but I definitely believe a vegan diet is healthier. There have been so many studies linking animal products to cancer- mainly processed and red meats and cheese. I've been vegan for well over 2 years now and have found that I have never felt better. I used to be overweight, fatigued and get headaches frequently. Now I have so much energy and rarely get sick. If you aren't convinced I recommend doing your own research into the subject, that's always better than just taking someone else's word for it. I think you will find that all nutritional needs can easily be met on a vegan diet and therefore we are having compassion for ourselves Too 😊 I feel like I'm eating in a way that makes me feel my best and gives me a lesser chance of things like heart disease, diabetes and cancer plus not contributing to unnecessary violence against animals plus using fewer of earth's resources. It's a win for everyone involved ❤

      I don't think that's what they were saying. Lots of foods referenced are very healthy: legumes, whole grains like rice and oats, and some organic produce. I think they were just saying that you don't necessarily need to buy fancy specialty products, like protein powders and green supplements, etc.

      Erin Stratman I said that the vegan “industry” and health “industry” are sometimes put in the same box which is why people think that they have to spend a lot of money on supplements and powders and pills in order to be vegan. I made the distinction between the two to say that a vegan diet can be as simple as just not eating animals and can be very affordable (and healthy) if you eat a whole food plant based diet. If you watch my TH-cam channel or follow my Instagram, you’ll see that I eat very healthy and am passionate about inspiring others to do the same. I agree with you, compassion for our bodies is so important. I went vegan for health reasons and that will always be the cornerstone of my decision to stay vegan. Hope that helps you understand where I’m coming from! ❤️❤️❤️
