  • The never ending car camping window coverings saga continues. PART ONE. Is it better to buy window coverings for a car camping set up or make them? I have now done both and I think there must be a third option that will meet all of my stealth camping needs.

I love my weather tech window coverings. They work so well for keeping out the heat when we go to Disneyland saving gas to cool down the car before we get in. Also for stealth camping in the cold with the black side out to keep the heat in. Had them for about 2 years and use them all the time. Sorry about your luck with them. The $160 set with the storage bag was worth it for us.

I have the Weathertech set for my Outback.... LOVE THEM!!! I covered the black side with felt drawer liners. It takes the SHINE off so, STEALTHY!!!
Covering the black side with that felt was a life-saver!!

I bought these magnetic window coverings... so love them! I found them on Amazon though you could do the cheaper option by just buying a type of reflective material (the ones that sit in your windshield) and just buy magnets and stick them up in your car... I now have it that my entire RAV 4 is blocked and if I wanted no one to see a thing inside all windows are blocked. And I purchased a small hammock inside my vehicle to store all the window coverings. I have my vehicle set up that if I needed to set up my car for boondocking to a regular SUV - I knew I didn't want to stick anything permanently or unscrew anything in the event I need my car to look absolutely like it did when I drove it off the lot.

Omg! I was gonna text you the other day! Try Diaso as well...the Japanese dollar store! They had window covers and car curtains the other day!!!
Do you need that same silver material you cut but thicker or are you happy with how this turned out? Will keep listening...I think I saw some thicker silver plastic at the sale I’m going to tomorrow. Let’s be in touch!

That does stink that you purchased the set and then they make you buy all again if you need a replacement 6 months later. But I do see how they are creating those for most people are likely wanting them for the purpose of car protection from the elements. I don’t think their purpose is for being stealth. The black side is to attract heat in the winter, which is the opposite of what I would want, say in the summer while being stealthy. Maybe you could put black fabric on that side to use the ones you have when being stealthy. I am on the fence for these to keep my Prius cool during my visit to Las Vegas this summer. Where you able to use them in any hotter climates and do you think they helped in that respect? Currently I use black out curtains and Velcro or magnets for all windows except the front and I don’t think they help much with heat.

If all you are wanting is to climate control the inside of your car they work but if you want to stealth camp they don't. I have used them in all types of weather. I'm mostly disappointed in how quickly they started braking down. I am in the process of editing the video a video I made about my new window coverings and I must say. It's harder than it looks but I'm happy with how things turned out.

@@jetsethome thanks for getting back to me! I just ordered them so we’ll see but yes to keep the car cooler. I think I may use them at night when stealth camping but like I said previously I have cut pieces from black out curtains that I owned prior to living in my car. So I think maybe I could place those in between the weathertech and the window so it’s not all glossy. Right now the curtains work fine really at night for no one to see in but some light does get through and I seem to have a knack for parking in just the right spot where a light shines right in my eyes when I lay down lol. So I think the combo of both will help with that as well. Guess we’ll see. Hopefully, they last a while. $167 is a lot to spend but will be worth for me if they work like I hope they will.

@@theaustralianhulk Keep me posted. I would love to hear how it works out for you. I also thought at one point to use black duct tape around the edge to fill in the gaps.

@@jetsethome got them in and the back one doesn’t fit right. Really none of them fit perfect but the sides are pretty decent. But the back has a cutout which doesn’t match my window. The front doesn’t fit around my camera case around my mirror and the small back piece is too small lol. I’m about to co tact them and see what they say

The Weathertech coverings I bought were worthless; I returned them for a refund the day they were delivered.
