I've had this blade for 9 months and it worked GREAT for processing deer and 2 elk . Works great for brush shelter building and processing fire wood . Also has the obvious potential as one hell of a combat blade . I rarely make a Kydex sheath for knives , but the choppa now has one with a pouch for a small file and DMT hone .
80 grit sandpaper was used to rough up the grips .
For anyone interested in a leather sheath the condor kumunga knife sheath fits the choppa, not just slides in but like the sheath was designed for it (fits better than on the kumunga). The condor only costs $45, the leather is very nice, you can order it at the same time and you get a spare knife. I used the choppa all summer and it's a very good blade.

I have NEVER seen a corn machete that looks like that Chris. I think you are right, they need to maybe define that a bit more.
Steven Szabo ... the KB-JC isn't a corn machete/blade. Its more like the okc rtak2, esse junglas styled blade instead. Very Bowie like.
Chris , the "Corn Knife" is kind of a regional thing ,my grandpa called them Grass knives, but same thing- bigger than a belt knife ;thicker ,shorter, and usually narrower than a machete. Instead of being used with a chopping motion it's more of a slow wrist flick along with drawing the knife back to you, but they are pretty versatile .

Bought this knife off bladehq and it was much bigger than I thought it was... i like it, only made some marshmallow roasters with it so far but it did the job nicely.
I love mine. Fairly light and pretty decent at chopping. The choil is what sold me on it. I had to change the handle with some homemade burlap micarta. Excellent review and can't wait to see part 2.

I can answer the "corn machete" question for you, I spent a lot of summers on my grandparents farm in Georgia with a "corn" or "tobacco" or "sugar cane" machete in my hand. Everyone called them something different, hence the quotes, it just depended on who you were talking to. We just called them machetes. This looks absolutely nothing like any of the ones we used, though. The photos you showed were closer but still not quite the same thing we used on the farm. The machetes we used were much longer, thinner, had way larger and more robust wooden handles, always had a lanyard, were curved, and had sharpened chisel shaped tips. I imagine there's quite a range of types, sizes, styles, uses though.
+Bob Ashmore Yeah, I'd be curious to hear what Jesse Jarosz thinks about that description on the ka-bar. Makes no sense to me. I definitely don't see it as a "Oooo! I gotta have that!!" Selling trigger.
I agree with you 100% here. You can't say something is a "best knife" because it is very subjective. You have to try couple knifes to see what you like better. I personally like lighter choppers like this Jarosz Choppa because Heavy knives usually feel awkward in my hand and I don't chop down 40 year old oak trees with a knife (also I have noodle arms). But someone might like heavy knives because it makes heavy chopping much easier and they are strong enough to use them easily. And that's fine.
I saw Gideon’s Tactical review this one and I’ve had my eye on it ever since the Jess x fiasco! I wish I would have bought a couple of those bad boys. I’ve never seen anything cut a Yeti in half like that. So since I can’t get one I’m leaning to this or a bk9 and going to pair it with a Mora Kansbol.
They used to cut corn off the stock by hand, thus, the 'corn machetes'. They've wicked handy tools.
fun fact. the 1095 Cro-Van steel that Ka-Bar uses is actually an old sharon steel part number. Chemically, it is basically 6195 steel.
I really like my Fox Kukri. It's $100 and made from Nitro B(a nice stainless steel), it has a very comfortable handle and it's a pretty good chopper. The stealth is ok, not bad for $100 but I want to kydex it eventually. I do wish it wasn't coated like the bigger one, never saw a reason to coat stainless steel.
Scandinavians combine leukus (long knives) with short puukkos piggybacked in combined sheaths. Leukus are lighter than modern American choppers but chop fast and can also be used for normal knife tasks. This seems a bit similar. I am curious to find out how you like using it. Nice video again, keep up the good work.
corn used to be harvested by hand. And a machete was tool used to cut corn.Sugar cane in Puerto Rico is still harvested with machete, as are bananas.
Looks like a great knife. It's nice to see an affordable quality knife review. I'll be looking forward to seeing the 2nd part. The KA-BAR Turok you mentioned looks like another good affordable quality blade. Thanks for sharing.
I have the KA - BAR Turok and in my opinion Jarosz is hitting it out of the park at that price point .
I purchased a Turok after watching Gideon Tactical’s video, no regrets whatsoever. Excellent knife.
You can use Clear Duracoat on bare steel to keep the look of a unfinished blade, and retain the rust prevention
In iowa we used big machetes to cut corn stalks when corn picked by hand
i used to chase the super steels but i just dusted of the old bk7 and sanded on it, put some new handles on it and that blade was still super sharp. thinking back it has always been that way. I love 1095 at least ka-bar heat treat anyway. I also have some s30vn blade and by god its always dull and i cant get it sharp.
This knife maybe a little late to the party. Many like me have the BK9, Esee Junglass and a few Ontario's. Now those starting out this knife can really fill alot of roles.
BTW I have a preorder for Dark Timber Grizzly. Ill freak out when that bad boy arrives.
Another Awesome review Chis, looking forward to part 2. Back in the 70's I owned a Military style Ka-Bar. And that thing took a beating and withstood it. This doesn't look to be a bad Knife, but I feel they could have come up with a better style of handle with better grip. Such as some kind of checkering or like grooves in the handle like a ol' School Ka-Bar perhaps.

Just got my Choppa. Love it. Love the weight and blade length. That finger choil will also come in handy for fine work or feathering. Love the spine in that it will make for easy batoning. This would be a "perfect" knife IF....and I do mean an all around perfect knife IF....it didn't have such a hot spot at the back top of the handle. If Jessie Jarosz or KaBar came up with a new handle that would eliminate that...it WOULD then become the most PERFECT knife for camping or prepping. I'd also love to see some Micarta handles come out for this knife, as well for its companions (Globetrotter and Turok).
Another thought as well. If the handle and back tang on the Choppa were made just like the Turok, the hot spot problem would have been completely solved.

Hey great video👍🏻🙂 are you going to make a 100 dollar gear series? That would be awesome. I only have one piece of gear over 100 and that is the LT Wright Genesis. I figured put out the extra money for the tool that is used most. Mine is A2 though. It is a great steel but I do regret not getting 3V because I live in a marsh lol. Can you get your hands on an Ontario SP-53 to review? It is right at 100 and chops like a beast💪🏻 I’m sure you will hate the sheath though😂
+spider5001 I don't like the SP series at all. I don't like the handles, or the way it transfers shock.
Try something like Flitz Rifle, knife and gun wax for protecting your A2. That's what I use. Works well so far. Froglube light work too
PREPAREDMIND101 oh well subjective like you said🙂 I have only tried the 53. I have had a BK2 in crovan though and that steel is great. Thank you for the recommendation on protecting the A2. Another question... would you be able to hone 3V back up with a ceramic rod?

*I bought a Moorhaus D2 tool steel 17.5 in hand forged machete from Amazon of all places last week. It's only $69 right now and worth every penny. I literally tried to break it and it held up unbelievably well. The edge is still perfect too. Just a fyi if anyone is looking for a chopper on a budget.*

i went online to check prices on this blade they go from a low of about 85.00 to a high of about 175.00.
I'm waiting for part 2. Hope that you beat the shit out of that tip... want to see the difference on this one.

J Rapp The back of the handle hurts the crap out of your hand when chopping, because of that reason the BK9 kills it , but thats just my opinion.

Corn Machetes were and probably still are used to cut corn stalks, much as a Cane Machete is used to cut sugar cane. In my opinion they simply thought the name was cool, because corn machetes in my experience as a Iowa farm boy tend to have a broad squared off tip, heavy blade and of medium length as far as machetes go. More often referred to as a corn knife as well.

Becker uses Kabar 1095CV whereas Esee is 1095 but differentially hardened... so the edge takes a nice edge but the steel back from the edge is much softer. Supposedly anyway.

I have to disagree with you on the “there is no on unicorn” because the fallkni never a1x is 1000% a unicorn that does a few things perfect and everything great! Not to mention it’s indestructible

According to the Internet, and we all know how accurate that is... A Corn Machete is a cutting tool manly used in hewing cornstalks, sugarcane, grass, corn and other agricultural products.
The Jaroz chopper is a survival chopper, and if you can put a survival kit inside the handle then you have the complete knife...

Well said Chris.... Oh now for my "subjective" impression of what I saw in the video. lol I would probable get this knife had I not just spent $156 dollars on a new bible. Yes, I know I am a minimalist when it comes to most things but I prefer to spend my money differently. $100 is not too much for this blade and I love 1095 for all of the reasons I have mentioned in other comments. Sure I would mod it - maybe a lot. But, the blade design is one I like.... and becaue of its size you could use it as a draw knife. But for now I have spent all of my toy money.. I might even use this to carve the Thanksgiving Turkey. lol
Levi Caddell what does the $156 bible look like? I got one as a gift a long time ago that was around that price I believe, all black leather with my name engraved with gold leafing, and its a parallel bible (kj, nkj, niv, & I think nlt or something similar) I use it all the time for research. (Not a Christian, but I was when I got it and have read the entire thing multiple times in different translations)
I read the Bible thru at least once a year and I make all kinds of notes, etc. My 5yo granddaughter calls it Grandpa's coloring book. A bible rarely last me longer than a couple of years. Usually one of my kids or grandkids get me old one because they like to read my notes. Subjectively... I see this as a 'late arrival' vs 'new kid on block' --- Objectively: for the Jarosz-come-lately I'd ask.. should (or could or would) we not be seeing some sorts of relatively obvious greater advantages/benefits (favorable innovations) ie. the virtues or rewards given its lineage from materials, to intended design pros, as well as production. Being quite objective... stuff does not quite add up here for this knife. That said - if a person is that new kid on the block (everyone starts somewhere)... then maybe this is a fine place to start... and in all likelihood can't stray to much in the wrong direction. Nothing meant as a bash to designer, manufacturer, or materials. I generally like his Turok, trust USA Kabar, and from experience feel certain Kabar knows what it is doing with materials selection plus quality control and customer service.
+Alaska Raft Connection - Alaska-BushRafter Well... Could be I'm just not thinking of it, but there aren't that many knives of that size that are still fairly agile that have a choil. That's what grabbed my attention. That's what separates it from the BK9. Kind of a "Ex-Jess" thing where it isn't tedious to choke up to busy out featherstick.
Hello Chris... thank you for your reply, and hope all is well in your camp - Happy Halloween. I feel you are right on with much of your initial assessments, and I do overall like what the designer is doing here. Jarosz is putting some thought and balancing (as in averaging/evening out) design intentions with traits of noteworthy substance. Of interest for me regarding this knife are its load-out, likely nimble-feel, and the long flat of the spine. What Kabar and Jarosz line really needs and folks like Blade HQ is true wilderness review... they do not have it, plus maybe this is intentional marketing. I can also say that in design... precise, effective batoning would be a high card. I'd go along w/ the light chopper along the lines of quick repetitive wood removal vs. placing much emphasis on powering thru things. The tip looks field knife tactical. The coil stuff I can take it or leave it if/when handle geometry and material is spot on. Thank you again... Heck once you are done perchance if possible have Blade HQ send a sample for winter review in Alaska. Bringing back the 'gauntlet' would be also good.

So, a few things. Thanks for the Veterans Info. Looks like a very good blade. But isn't it refreshing that a REAL Knife Company like Ka-Bar (unlike a NAMELESS one) gives you options like the Jarosz, Becker and their Big Brother for about the same price? BTW, THE Wife HATES "However Comma." I played it for her. Thanks for the Look She gave me! Finally, there's a Trauma Pak with a Tourniquet in my Work Locker, my Car and at Home. Im sure this is not a bad knife but when i look at this thing and the sheath i cant see why someone should buy it when you could buy the esee junglas for ~50$ more. I don't have either of those knives but the esee seems so much better, especially becaus of the sheath (wich is basically a 100$ item on its own) and the handle.
+Finest I covered that reason: Subjective. Take my subjective view for instance....I hate the Junglas. Now, if ESEE made a flat-saber ground version, then I'd be in a tight spot and may have to recommend it. But as long as it remains a FFG chopper (two things I do not personally believe should be in the same sentence), that's not going to happen. But I'm just one opinion and I don't insist it be yours.

Im an American living in the Philippines 13 years now. Ive found no better over all blade. For elephant grass, bamboo, cutting and batoning wood. Finer task i use either a Mora Bushcraft Black or Esse6. I have a pretty full line of knives but i really have to stop buying them lol!! Its murder the shipping and customs i pay. Ok I have a Bark Timber Grizzly on pre-order but thats it I swear lol!!
