That's real. It happens in TV, books and Movies often too. It's a great narrative device to communicate rules and make the content more accessible. Yeah I mean I love helping new players learn the game. They often don't come with a lot of preconceptions about the game and mostly show up to have fun.

It happens all the time in anime so someone can explain what's happening, haha. And I love how new players lack preconceptions. I played so differently when I didn't know what to do.

Ally is so great in Dimension 20 games, always coming in with nat 20s at the best moments

Also, watching them grow from a DnD novice into a force of chaos has been very fun to watch.

Another reason that both Brennan and Matt Mercer have talked about is that novice players are more likely to think of "outside the box" maneuvers and ask "can I do that?" whereas experienced players are more likely to look at their character sheet for the most powerful listed ability. Having someone try something weird that isn't explicitly listed as something they normally do makes the game more interesting to watch.

I have been prefering higher level roleplayers lately, and the rules are almost an indecent part of the game.
