I don't think anyone familiar with D20 could seriously doubt that the cast could pull off this genre mashup. Nobody would hesitate to call Sophomore Year a comedy, but that doesn't mean Baron from the Baronies can't scare the sh*t out of you.
Is the genre really a mashup, though? Fairytales were generally used as stories to children to warn them of real life dangers in a fantastical way. Don’t wander alone in the woods. Don’t trust that stranger. Don’t be prideful, etc. They very frequently end with the protagonists dying. I’d argue that fairytales *originally* count as children’s horror in genre.

@@geek_peek ah I'm so happy! I always have a point halfway through a long YT comment where I think "am I spending my time well by putting this much thought and time into a comment?" and the answer is usually "nah it's a pointless argument" or something, but when that happened just now, the answer was "absolutely, this guy needs to know how good he is at this - you'd waste your time by NOT finishing this" 😂 Also apparently the reason imposter syndrome occurs is because of a breadth of understanding of the job - someone who's unqualified or unprepared will feel like it's easy because they don't understand the scope of the task, while someone who is the right person for the job will suffer that syndrome because they're aware of the full picture, the masters of that trade, and all the ways it can go right or wrong - basically, it's usually a strong sign that you ARE in the right place, doing the right thing I'd be immensely proud if you used that comment as a way to centre yourself when you feel impostor-y - I might even print out your comment so I can feel that pride when I need a boost haha!
I'm so pumped for this. I love horror and dark comedy as well so this sounds right up my alley. What he said about fairy tales resonates with me as well. So many fairy tales sound whimsical and fun when we're kids, but if you look back at them as an adult they're truly twisted.
Also I will say on the horror aspect (while I love it personally) I do understand why it might not be some people's jam. A Crown of Candy wasn't really horror, but there were many moments that had me stressing at home. I trust the D20 gang though and I trust that it won't be taken too far.
Also I have to say that I knew that Brennan would be doing research for his campaigns, but the fact that he asked other players/DM's on folklore and stuff like that surprised me. It sounds like we might be getting interesting folklore and fairy tales from across different countries which sounds really fun and interesting!
Watching this after the season is over hits so differently, particularly the question about lethality and having backup characters at the ready. I love watching Brennan sort of work through that question in his head, knowing the mechanics of this season and coming to the conclusion that there really wasn't any way to give a proper answer without spoiling it.
Nice and calming interview for me who is also very sensitive to horror, so I got my hopes up to be able to watch it. And I love the aspect that the players this time have to work very hard to get information about the world from Brennan.
I think the combination of horror and comedy is genius. Movies like Shawn of the Dead help blend the two genres in fantastic ways and I can't wait to see what Brennan does with it. I also love the idea of a horror/fairy tale campaign. I ran a Feywild one shot based on Hansel and Gretel that had a lot of horror elements thrown in. Done right, these genres make a very eerie tone that should be amazing. If he leans into it, the show could have a Witcherish feel where different monsters have specific weaknesses that you can only discover by understanding the folklore etc. Really looking forward to binging this eventually.
the idea that a scary fairy tales theme wouldn’t be comedic is wild to me. syd and olivia podcast did a great episode where they read two old fairy tales and then wrote their own and honestly. absolutely hilarious. there’s so much comedians can do with a good grimm style fairy tale story. and horror - read one plot summary of a horror franchise sequel. there’s so much ludicrously goofy shit in those. also, if someone can make me cry about a chocolate bunny killed for heresy they can make a fear themed story make me laugh. excited to see the season, and to see the rest of this interview! i paused to type but dang this comment section is rave reviews i’m happy to have run into this channel
