Player Agency is ESSENTIAL for Healthy D&D Groups
Read my article about Player Agency: www.flutesloot.com/player-agency-in-dnd-is-essential/?
Player agency is players experiencing the freedom to make impactful choices tied to a game’s outcomes. It is the magic sauce that assures players their choices matter. It encourages them to invest time and energy into a shared gaming experience. Without it, your game is effectively dead. Here's how to know if you have player agency and how to improve your game.

    While I don't like combining Strahd's infinite charm with a TPK as that falls under DM-VS-Players to me, I do love the idea of charming everyone at the dinner, turning it into a party, and everyone comes to their senses the next day mostly drained of blood.

    Parriwimple nearly killed 3/4th of the party I was in after I killed his uncle. I didn't percieve him as a threat because the DM described him as "a young, blonde boy". After getting hit three times and nearly one shot we all got on the DM's case about calling what is clearly a linebacker a "young boy". Ended up killing him, eating his heart (which upset the paladin) in the middle of the street, and Ismark kicked us out of Barovia.

    There aren't generally sign versions of languages, like how there's American Sign Language and British Sign Language which are totally unrelated even though they both speak the same language. Although there is Signing Exact English, which is a signed version of English in that it's designed to have a one-to-one correspondence in worlds and the same grammar. In any case, you still wouldn't expect all the races to use the same sign language. They should tend to differ on national boundaries, like how spoken languages do, even if they don't strictly correspond to spoken languages. Also, I'm curious as to if the rules are any different. Do you sign the language instead of speaking and writing it, or is it, by RAW, still a language that you speak and write, and they just call it "Common Sign Language"?

  • @pigeonsyndrome2249
    @pigeonsyndrome2249 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

    As for tip #6, on homebrew ways to dethrone Strahd, I remember seeing suggested that the only way to rid Strahd of his curse was for someone else to replace him and that's still probably my favourite method of perma-killing Strahd. Both the Death House and the Tree seem to not only foreshadow Strahd's immortality but also reinforce a theme of stasis in Barovia. As a soul-trap maintained by the Dark Powers, everything is bound to remain eternally unchanging. Strahd may seem like Barovia's master, but he too is bound by this rule and in this sense he's no less a servant or a toy to the Dark Powers than the players are to him. If you as a DM play on this theme of Barovia being unchangable, then the only plausible way to defeat Strahd is to replace him - to have one of the player characters be willing to work with the Dark Powers and effectively "steal" Strahd's curse of immortality, but in the process sacrificing their chance of escaping and dooming their soul to be stuck in Barovia forever, possibly being corrupted by the Dark Powers. Strahd may be gone, but the ending is still open - will the new ruler be any better than him? Or will they eventually succumb to the forces that keep Barovia unchanging? Was the sacrifice really worth it if the result in ultimately the same?

    • @FlutesLoot
      @FlutesLoot 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's the alternative I used and it seemed memorable for the players. If I run the campaign again, I'll have to consider how I want to set up the ending options to switch things up.

    One of the first things I started working on for my Theros campaign (that I still haven’t started yet) is stuff like wandering merchants, important NPC’s that have strange wares that are either useful or something players might want. Niroy the Scholar- spell component, reliquaries, parchment, books, ludicrously expensive glassware, fancy inks, magical inks, etc. Marcol the Mirthful- sells you items commonly found in the black market. Poison, street drugs, magical items with slight curses (like a bag of holding that has 100 insults), thieves tools, etc. Becca the blackened- sells most standard weapons and a couple of metal items like caltrops. (Her and Niroy are the most likely to have discounts) Timbre the hunter- pelts, hunting tools, spell focuses that double as weapons, animal based totems etc. he would pay a hefty price for the skin of a monstrosity. Calliope the herbalist- more Druidic wares, recreational/beneficial drugs, goody baskets, mistletoe components, and wooden weapons/slings.

    Ritual Caster is an amazing feat for a rogue. If you take it at first level, you can start the game with Find Familiar, and you can add scrolls to your book, giving you the ability to eventually cast all wizard ritual spells. That's really good. If you are playing a Thief, Tavern Brawler and Healer are both broken because of their interaction with Fast Hands. Healer lets you use fast hands to use a healing kit raise two downed allies to 1 hp each round. Fast hands lets you throw acid flasks, alchemist fire, oil and holy water as a bonus action. Tavern Brawler makes you proficient with these items, allowing you to apply your sneak attack damage when you do this. This means you can throw an acid flask 20' as a bonus and sneak attack when you do, and then ready your action to throw a second acid flask on your opponents turn, giving you two sneak attacks per turn. With Variant Human, both of these can come online at level three. Extremely powerful.

    • @FlutesLoot
      @FlutesLoot 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ritual Caster is fun if your DM gives you scrolls (I once took it and asked the DM if I could find scrolls, and he said yes, but I never got any to level 20). You might like my Thief video, which dives deep into how the Thief works. I love that subclass :)

    • @IanFooteBased
      @IanFooteBased 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @FlutesLoot That's part of the fun, though. If you have a shitty dungeon master, you're obviously not going to have any fun, but, Ritual Caster gives the dungeon master adventure hooks to motivate your character, which is a huge plus in my book. Find Familiar, Detect Magic, Phantom Steed, Alarm, Comprehend Languages, Identify, Tenser's Floating Disk, Unseen Servant, Magic Mouth, Leomunds Tiny Hut, Water Breathing, Divination, Contact Other Plane and Rary's Telepathic Bond, all from one feat. It's one of the best feats in the game.

      @@IanFooteBased I agree it's a great feat, and I especially like game elements that make it easy to reward a player in a way they care about. I wouldn't say my DM was shitty, btw. DMs have a lot to juggle and have different experience levels.

    So the WereRavens dont want to infect the pc’s. Davian was not their fated ally and the druids ended up rolling stupid well and killed a lot of the Martikovs, shit got weird…but I had one of the clan helping them in Valaki. Strahd mortally wounded the man and he passed the “curse” on and I tell you what, it really changed the dynamic. Can you point me to the "Duelist" game feature you're referencing? I assume you mean dual wielding or two-weapon fighting. You can only make the additional claw attack once per turn and only from the attack action as its trigger. "Once on each of your turns when you attack with a claw using the Attack action, you can make one additional claw attack as part of the same action"

      I'm playing a fey inspired spellcaster and i'm having a blast with reading other people dreams, which my DM let me do with detect thoughts (since they are asleep, we consider their dreams as what is presently on their mind). I can't wait to interract with those dreams in some of the manners you propose 😊

    Yeah playing a 5e rogue / fighter. I get denied assassinate a lot. Usually because the dm rolls init after i sneak into a room. Then the enemy beats me on init. Can't see me and doesn't do anything because they don't know I'm there. Then I attack for sneak attack but not assassinate. Its somewhat annoying.

    DM's forget how to properly play intelligent enemies. Strahd is highly intelligent and has eyes EVERYWHERE. He is going to go into their final confrontation knowing EXACTLY what the party can do, and will make a plan to deal with them.

    • @FlutesLoot
      @FlutesLoot หลายเดือนก่อน

      DMs often hold themselves to a standard of not metagaming their DM knowledge into a monster's knowledge, but Strahd totally gives the DM a reason to plan around the party. Strahd should know what they can do, and the party should feel accomplished if they hide anything from him and his spies.

    Amen. I struggled to get into 5E which is the first DND edition I got into. I had no prior experience with TTRPGs. I did have a lot of experience with World of Warcraft though. That helped a lot. Now I understand the basics of DND 5E. Even then I find the system a bit too crunchy and random for my taste. It seems that some things are more complex than they should be, and that doesn't offer anything fun or interesting. Overall DND is an awesome game. It is just the needlessly complex parts are the worst part. I end up using a lot of house rules to fix and streamline the game.

    This is an interesting take, but it's been done to death by many channels and feels myopic... only geared from a player's point of view and experience. Player Agency AND DM agency is crucial to a healthy D&D group, not just one, or the DM WILL burn-out or lose interest. It's everybody's game, not just the player's over the DM. It can't be just the players, and not just the DMs game. Both sides need to "have Agency" IN the game and story, and during gameplay. The DM is NOT there to just come up with a basic homebrew idea, or just be a referee between the players in whatever pre-written module they are trying to accomplish, nor just be a potted plant as a spectator. There's (usually) 3-6 players in a D&D game, all fighting for the spotlight, but only 1 DM... everybody can share in that spotlight. The DM is a "player" too. Each side needs to meet the other half-way, so both sides can have fun! If only the players or just the DM is having fun, then the game will NOT be healthy.

    • @FlutesLoot
      @FlutesLoot หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your comment! I speak from my own experience: focusing on player agency cured my burnout and made the game the most fun it has ever been for me. It's easier to prep, effortless to roleplay, fun to improvise, and everything feels like it matters. The six players have constantly thanked me for my effort. The sum of my efforts is the same as ever, just with a worthwhile focus. There may be only 1 DM, but everything that players do interacts with me as the DM, so if anything, it's easy to feel like I hog the spotlight. So, I disagree that promoting and focusing on player agency will make the game less fun for the DM. This is a false dichotomy, and it's easy to say that any good advice can be applied poorly or out of balance. I also feel fine making a video about a topic I'm passionate about. Believe it or not, I researched other videos that had already been covered on the topic and made it my own to add something new.

      @@FlutesLoot Ok, it's on.... No, you didn't "research" other videos, you just ripped them off, especially the Dungeon Dudes Player Agency video, "Quantum Ogres" and all. And please don't fabricate a Strawman for my post. You, like the other videos you ripped off, promoted a game that is only character and player based, (pleading to the peanut gallery as it were, and like we don't have enough videos and D&D books only geared to the players) while I promoted a game for all... so, you tell me Mr. "False Dichotomy" and rip-off remora... which of us has the moral high ground?

      @@MarkLewis... Hi Mark, I think we just have different ways of playing TTRPGs or we at least have different methods, but I wish you all the best. • @MarkLewis...
      @MarkLewis... หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@FlutesLoot My only issue with your initial retort was it was strongly implying there's a right way and a wrong way to play, and your way is the right way, thus mine wrong. As if (then in the video) you had some epiphany that you were at first controlling everything way too much, but then, went to the other extreme and completely laid down for your players, in pretty much of them doing whatever they want to do. Going to these extremes, total control to the players doing (pretty much everything creative) is going to cause another "burn out" for you, and your players. You will have no sense of game satisfaction because you accomplished nothing in the game, and they will feel all the pressure on them to create... all you did was shift the responsibility on your players. Sure, easier for you because you have little to no prep. Just like your total control got old for you and your players... so will turning everything over to them. I've been playing and DMing since the 70s... I've seen it all with D&D... trust me, find a middle ground between you and your players. Play however you wish and do whatever videos you want, but my point wasn't DM Agency... my point was players AND the DM having Agency, so everyone shares the spotlight.

      @FlutesLoot หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MarkLewis... I must not have made my core point well in the video. I fancy myself a middleground guy but saw greater need to hit this point home to even people out and help them understand likely why their games die out. I enjoy preparing a lot of content and things I get excited about while also leaning into the players getting excited about their choices.
