As Mikhail said below, he studied all Ravel's piano works with Ravel. I was lucky enough to attend quite a few of his masterclasses and hear him in recital on numerous occasions. He was a wonderful musician especially in Chopin, Mozart, Ravel and in this repertoire his playing was sublime.
Not being a piano player, I was going to sheepishly ask if there weren't a fair assortment of clams in his playing. But I agree with you, he played very nicely.
HELLO? WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE MAN WHO LITERALLY STUDIED THE ENTIRE RAVEL REPERTOIRE WITH THE COMPOSER HIMSELF!!!! NO ONE ELSE BETTER TO LISTEN TO! IM TELLING YOU GENIUS.
How good to see M. Perlemuter again, if not in the flesh, then preserved on TH-cam in this very difficult piece by Ravel. I can never understand why Perlemuter isn't better known. Bravo !
@Classical8Finatic I know this is an old discussion, however, get the sheet music for either the Tocatta and/or the Rhapsodie and start playing . You'll be suprised how much you learn and you'll gain alot of confidence in the process. After nine years of playing you should have the technique and tenacity to do it. I was fortunate to have a sympathetic teacher who let me work on what I wanted. One day you'll discover you no longer need a teacher who holds you back.
@Classical8Finatic Hi I am 12 and I am playing this Ravel Toccata and have just finished the Rachmaninoff Prelude in Gminor . It really is a wonderful piece but for the most precise recording watch Rachmaninoff playing it. It is quite originial and different from how most people interepret it. Best of Luck, Katherine
@Troybeallad He isn't better well known, quite unfortunately, because he only played Ravel. Why Ravel isn't better known and more extensively taught is what i cant understand.
i have a question i am 15 years old i can play this song without problems but only slow and this song needs speed. how should i practice it to get it fast ?
@paulphilip1 oh i see. i got confused because i read on wikipedia that he never played his contemporaries work apart from ravel. hmmm i should trust wikipedia less. and please do upload them!

He did a wonderful job bringing out the melody line, especially for such a difficult piece! Beautifully done.
This proves that even if you play some wrong notes it's still beautiful if you play the music. Get what I mean?

Philipp Haberland its the proof of self playing experience and feelings
i hear one or two wrong notes...
Gotcha
some say that even Ravel improvised.....

His hands' movements!! Amazing!
I think this is the "DEFINITVE" version of all. A legacy for humanity.
Lol it sure isn't, Perlemuter himself played it much better, with a much tighter control in earlier recordings
Many pianists play this work well!
When i was a child i though it was the most dificult of the world. I love it, Perlemuter performance is awsome.
Rest assured it is insanely difficult
I remember watching this video 14 or so years ago. I am 35 now, seems like a different lifetime.
Perlemuter's technique is very beautiful to watch, allowing for flexibility and nuance of sound even in this kind of texture.
Even at old age, more electrifying than any of these younger pianists. And at :56, we're dreaming.
Fabulous performance, by a Ravel pupil.
Saw him playing this in 1991! Unbelievable1

Very nice!
He was professeur at the Conservatoire de Paris, wasn´t he?
Vlado Perlemuter!
I really enjoyed that performance. I've listened to Perl for years but not that piece. Le tombeau is one of my favorite Ravel compositions.
WAIT UNTIL YOU LISTEN TO HIS CHOPIN. Please Type "Perlemuter Chopin" in TH-cam and listen to ANYTHING that comes up. You will not be disappointed...
A true specalist of Ravel.
Thank you very very much!
A time lag between sounds and movie was corrected!

I must have a go myself, just have to spend the time on it...
@@robconnell5549 The time will be a great investment. Check out IMSLP to see of the scores are there.
he looks so self-contained !
It doesn't get any better than this!!! :)
The pianist kind of looks like Ravel!
Awesome performance

Masterful and elegiac. Up there with Samson François. Poetry and power at once.
Me encanta este compositor !! 100000/100000 !!!
One of the finest pianists I have heard.
Does anyone know the year when the original film was created?
It may not be perfect, but he solves all the big problems as if second nature.
incredible, such a great interpretation.
Thank you for fixing htis video!!!!!
Really nice! Thanks for posting this.
Omg he's a legend
very wonderful! beautiful!!

God damn that's a tough piece

Excellent! amazing
It looks even wilder when you're the guy playing it looking down at your hands.
I agree entirely. The same applies pretty much to Busoni's Toccata also.
Very good tempo !!
holy mother of god, this is pure genius!
Good luck with your college auditions and the Rachmoninov.
Wow~ Bravo~!! I embedded this in my personal blog~:)
fantastic !!!
is this on french television?
just a guess...
Marvelous!
Superb
Awesome !!!!
amazing
dazzling pianism! and he looks so decontracted ! '( however a few wrong notes but the tempo is so fast!)
好厲害,像絲綢一樣圓滑的觸技。有的音樂確實不能光用耳朵聽。
i have a question i am 15 years old i can play this song without problems but only slow and this song needs speed. how should i practice it to get it fast ?
no one plays ravel like perlemuter
Except for the widow of the man this song was dedicated too
Lol I don't think anyone plays this as an exercise, it's like saying you play clavicembalisticum instead of Hanon.
@paulphilip1 oh i see. i got confused because i read on wikipedia that he never played his contemporaries work apart from ravel.
hmmm i should trust wikipedia less. and please do upload them!
where do you want to audition?
ich denkmal..er ist Meister von Klavier!
8 out of 10 on the Karajan-scale. This piece you always must play better than you can.
@pianotonton
nan sa resemble au tic toc choc de coperin

My friend plays this as an exerciser.
He says it's as hard as s***.
omg, he played it like nothing

Ugh, not a fan of this pianist at all.
