It's very interesting to hear this piece performed by Francois give or take 7 decades ago. I'm used to listening to Vocatello's version, much more modern. The most obvious difference is their pedaling. Really digging how Francois reserves the pedal for some of the most expressive parts. Super cool to hear it done from the perspectives of different times.
also Vacatello is playing a Yamaha with very thin timbre, much less color possibilities. Vacatello usually plays Fazioli, which is the simplest timbre possible, the most direct sound with little ressonance. that's why you may find Samson pedalling interesting. there are musical harmonic combinations that are not available in other piano brands.
When there was no TH-cam yet, the first CD I chose to listen to Ravel's music was by Samson François. I was completely fascinated. I never thought that I would be able to listen to the talk and the performance, but I am sorry that I cannot understand what he said because I do not speak French.

Wow, the toccata sounds exactly like the EMI recording from the 60s. Either he had it extremely under control or this is the actual take. Crazy, I would have expected a treacherous piece like this to be heavily spliced on record, but he plays it almost flawlessly in one take!
An utterly remarkable and eccentric musician, and a true musician. He recorded all the solo piano music of Ravel and the Ravel piano concertos -- all on a budget EMI release. The recordings of the Concerti are, imo, 'definitive,' and no matter whoever has done them suberbly, you'll want the Francoise recordings!

Yes, the 2 Ravel's concerti are extraordinary, and the Director is Cluytens, if i am not mistaken. Recorded in the end of the fifties.
