    You might want to look into the vanos pump failing. Symptoms: "Some of the first symptoms of a Vanos problem in these creatures is a knocking noise in the cam hubs when cranking it over. Other signs include jerky power at low RPM and a gentle knocking sound coming from the front of the heads while running"

  • @mattj20
    @mattj20 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    That knock when cranking is the vanos hubs , your vanos solenoids are leaking the oil back down or the accumulator on the side of the block is leaking past and not holding pressure

      I’ll also say it won’t actually hurt it phill it just sounds crap !
      There is a vanos bleeding procedure on the stock dme with holds the revs up and swings the cam timing about to get any possible air out of the system
      Your car will eventually expel any possible air out of the system once driven and the vanos is activated and id assume it won’t be quite so picky over cam timing as the stock dme which is what the bleeding procedure was originally designed for as the cars would have a total melt down if they couldn’t accurately target cam angle 😂

      @Ewok_Nz 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@driftworks If it has had the pan off and has not been running since, the internal vanos line may have not been torqued up properly. This is another consideration (don’t ask me how I know 😂)

    Get a vacuum cooling filler. Especially for bmw’s a gamechanger. Makes filling much easier with less chance for air pockets and its a nice way to test for leaks

    I'm glad you guys picked up the knock during cranking. I heard it last time and I was going to mention it. I would tread very carefully until you know what's causing it. I'm not familiar with the VANOS in the S85, but in the S54, there is an accumulator that can sometimes fail. IMO, this doesn't sound like a VANOS knock., but if you want to see if it's operating properly, there is a VANOS test in DIS for the S54. Perhaps it's the same for this engine.

  • @Invad3rsMustD1e
    @Invad3rsMustD1e 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    The knocking sounds like the VANOS hubs rattling until theres oil pressure, would definitely be worth testing the pressure from the vanos oil pump and also test the accumulator, a failed accumulator will cause low oil pressure to the VANOS on start-up.

It looks crazy but I can’t stop thinking about the inevitable valve cover gasket failures, the complexity of standard maintenance on the engine, the excessive introduction of high heat environments from the manifolds. I don’t know the expectations of the usability of the car, but I’m seeing a sema build rather than a weekend cruiser. Looks dope though.

    Have you guys bled the vanos since the rebuild? If not then that vanos knock on turn over will go away once bled but bleed it 2 or 3 times one after the other it takes 18 or so minutes per bleed then reset adaptations and run a vanos test and see what numbers you get. Also vanos solenoids can play up if left to sit a while they can be cleaned/checked using a 9 volt household battery and change the seals to viton ones as std bmw ones perish. The knocking is just air in the vanos system
