Today I'm reviewing the Shure MV7 podcasting microphone. I've been using this mic for about a year and I think it's the perfect mic for podcasters, TH-camrs and streamers. No need for extra equipment like audio interfaces or XLR cables since it's a USB mic. I highly recommend this mic if you're a content creator of any kind.

Such a great video. Nice editing and properly put together. You’ll surely get bigger
Thank you Hossana!! :)
Nice to see another Melbournian! Great review, thank you for this!
Oh nice! :) Thanks for saying hi!!
If I use Podmic usb to record the music sound from the speaker, do you think it is suitable, or do you have other recommendations
This was very helpful. Thank you definitely going to subscribe
So glad it was helpful! Thanks for the sub! :)
Thanks for the video Nick, I'm just looking to upgrade from a Blue Yeti to this Shure MV7 as the Yeti has been a long term nuisance that's casuing too many retakes and overall wasting my time. The audio quality in your video here sounds awesome and crystal clear so I think I'll deffo be picking this up.
definitely consider the Rode PodMic USB instead! It came out a few months ago and most reviewers prefer it over the Shure MV7 (cheaper price, type c port, nicer build quality, more capable software and basically the same sound quality). Unless your use case happens to include recording via USB and XLR simultaneously (PodMic USB can't, MV7 can), definitely go for the Rode.
@@sobrangitm Hey thanks for the heads up man, the Podmic has actually popped up on my list to check out too, and so far looks to be a much better option for the price.
Thanks for sharing that recommendation! Will have to check out the PodMic :)
That mic sounds fantastic mate, Its OP for us basic user!
Thanks! Yeah kinda moving into the prosumer tier but still a great mic even just for zoom calls etc :)
mine just came in the mail, great video
Hope you enjoy it! :)
How to record your voice using this mic? Is it in the software ?
the one i bought did come with a stand, it comes with a manfrotto stand that is made specifically for it
Oh nice!!
Exactly what I searched thanks !
Glad I could help!
Don't know if you still have this mic, but a solution to micro-USB woes involves buying cables that have different magnetic-ended tips. I found them useful for things like older gaming controllers, for example. Leave the various tips (e.g. 'C', micro, etc.) in your client item and the rest of the cord in the host interface/charger.
Great tip, thanks for sharing!
This helped push me over the edge to get the MV7, thanks Nick!😁👍 I'm curious: Are you doing any additional audio tweaking in post (other than volume) for videos like this one, or is it essentially straight from the mic? I'd love to know your settings etc., because you sound here exactly like I want to in my videos. Thanks so much!
Nice, you're going to love it! I have it set to the 'dark' mode in the Shure app on my mac, and then I just add a basic compressor to lift the volume. Other than that, it's straight out of the mic! No extra eq needed :)
@@NickKendall Would you mind sharing what that compressor setup is too? Because I got the mic, and I'm actually having a lot of trouble with the volume being too low😅 I can raise the gain, but then I'm getting a ton of background noise (bird chirps outside, I hear it). Thanks Nick!
Hmm I've had a few comments from people sharing the same experience! I'll try to get a video out in the next couple of weeks sharing my whole process! :)@@Joshetcetera
@@NickKendall That would be great, thanks Nick! Still definitely struggling... I set the mic gain low, and I'm too quiet; I set the mic gain high, and the background noise is too loud. My $8 lav mic was doing a bit better in that respect😂
Thanks! Bought.
Hope you enjoy it! :)
Thank you for the great review. I would be using this quite a bit for team meetings over MS-Teams. Can you tell me if the Shure MV7 has a mute button?
No problem! And yes, it has a mute button :)
@@NickKendall Thanks for the fast reply. I might buy this mic.
I just bought the M7+ but thanks for this review still
Nice! How are you finding it?
@@NickKendall I love it. It’s pretty cool.
I left a thumbs up, hope that's ok. I'll likely buy this mic. Looking to upgrade an aging blue yeti.
Thanks for the thumbs up and comment! Hope you enjoy the mic! :)
what if you are typing on your keyboard? Do the mic pick that up?
Yes it will if in front or under the mic.
What software do u use to get clear good quality smooth sound?
I just record into Garageband on mac, and then add a basic compressor in Final Cut Pro. Hope that helps! :)
amazing sound, i recently bought mine, but cant reach that kind of sound, im so bad in eq and extras
Are you recoding into your computer with USB? Try using the Shure Motiv app and setting it to 'dark' and see if that sounds better! :)
So i dont podcast or sing, but i play a lot of games that cause me to suddenly and explosively scream. Im having trouble finding any examples of this mic (or most mics for that matter) being using in such a way. Does this mic have the capacity to record screams without clipping, or do i need to look for an alternative or an helper. More need a push in the right direction, I dont have a lot of knowledge in audio technicality.
Hmm that's definitely a challenge. It's actually probably less about the particular mic you choose and more about the effects you apply to your mic. To stop clipping on that type of thing, you'll probably need to add a limiter (limits the volume from going past a certain level) and a compressor (to compress the loudest sounds and the quietest sounds so they are more even). These are both digital effects, I'm just not sure where you'd apply them. You might be able to do it inside OBS, but I'm not super familiar with streaming. Hope that helps point you in the right direction! :)
@@NickKendall thank you, thats something to consider. Ill be sure to research on those topics instead. Thank you for the reply and the review of the mic. I might buy it
Is it worth upgrading if im currently using a blue yeti?
Do you like the sound of the MV7 better? I've heard Blue Yeti's are decent!
I just bought my new MV7 today. I downloaded the app on my PC. The app will not open. It just sits there and says Loading. Any suggestions?
Hmm that's frustrating! Are you on pc or mac? Have you tried the classic turn your computer off and then on again?
You need to take off MV7 from PC, then run your App again. If it's help, you can plug in your mic again and wait, when it will be detected in app. It's work for me (but not always, ~50-60% of cases). If it isn't work i reload my PC and do it more times.
Again - do not connect your mic to PC before you start app.
How short is the USB cable??
It's decent; 3 meters :)
Ive been using this mic for about a year, and there are big issues with it.
It is far to sensitive to background noise. If you try to cancel out the noise, you have no volume at all, and then need to spend days editing individual chunks of audio, ever 1-2 seconds and adjust audio levels in post.
The other problem is the stupid touch pad for the volume that randomly loves cutting out and changing. Happened while live so many times. I am at the point I think Im just going to use the Rode Lav mic. Its reliable, has good sound and just works. Sure, when the Shure works, it has a very nice tone and color, but whats the point if its so unreliable.
Change the filter to the SM7B filter it works 100% better.
Yes, great tip!
How much better, and is this an option in the Shure motive control app?
I plug it straight into my Galaxy phone to record video/audio - don't need to edit the audio at all. Great value mic.
Oh soo good! Didn’t realize that was possible!!
Yes, saves you having to record your audio separate and then lining up with your video in the editor. Works with iPhone too but you will need a USB C adaptor or USB Micro B to iPhone cable.@@NickKendall
Your comment is exactly what I was looking for in order to make a purchasing decision. I definitely need something like this for my Tiktok lives.
Just ordered mine and I was wondering about the phone recording, so this is wonderful.

Thanks and welcome! :)
Hello the golden watcher where does it go after buying the mic thank you
It doesnt want to attach to the arm for some reason even if i put the golden watcher inside
Hmm that's odd, it should fit. Are you using the same boom arm?
Is the arm included???
No, it's not. The arm I have is from Rode.
Hello brother, I am a blind person. I am doing live streamings in India. So please suggested me this is a good mic for me. I am using i7 12th generation processor with my desktop
The Shure MV7 is a great mic for streaming! :)
What about mv7 Plus?
Can you show what settings you use?
When shooting TH-cam videos I have it set to 'near' and 'dark' on the Shure Motiv app.
As someone who just bought this mic (upgraded from blue Yeti). It is overhyped, overpriced marketing ploy that is exact same sound quality as the blue yeti.
Maybe it's beacouse a lot of replicas from China. But price for this replica-mic is ~60-80$ (i bought my for $80),
Is it? I am also considering upgrading from a Blue Yeti. Should I shell out more and get the SM7B?
If you are using it for gaming then I'd say not work, especially if you already use push to talk. On the other hand if you use voice activation / podcasting then it will be better because it won't pick up background noise. @@shugyosha7924
