As a PS1 guy myself, I'd have to give this one to the Saturn. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
My thoughts are that its 2D beatemup but made with PS1 strengths in mind it has transparent objects everywhere.
It's worth a play through either console because not many beatemups that gen
Não conhecia esse jogo... Saturno mandou bem.
Obrigado, Princesa Caju.
I grew up with the PS1 but the Saturn version of the games seem to look better & load faster 😁😁 great video as usual ...🍻
This one is a long one so some initial thoughts.
1. The timer ticks down faster on the Saturn version
2. There is some slowdown on the Playstation version especially when a lot of actions and props are on screen.
3. The Whale stage has foreground elements. However the Playstation version has a animated background layer to give the illusion of movement and vibration of being inside a whale.
4. The Playstation music tracks are seamless. The Saturn's music stops followed by pause then restarts.
no transparencies on saturn.
@@praystation that's always a given
The timer thing actually just looks like every level starts a little earlier in the Saturn version, so the timer is always about half a second ahead compared to the PlayStation footage. Now, do we put that down to more loading on PlayStation to start the level, or just bad syncing of exactly when the levels start and end in each version by the video creator?
The only level I did notice where the timer clearly fell behind in one version was the roller-coaster stage, which is actually auto-scrolling and therefor not dependant on how long the player takes to make their way through the stage. There it was actually the Saturn version that lost time, meaning it must have suffered more slowdown. And that's despite the PlayStation version additionally rendering shadows on the player and all the enemies at all times there.
But that's just my observation there.
The music on the Saturn is redbook audio so it has no choice but to start over.
This a more closer comparison between the two. You can tell developers put effort into both ports of the game.
Las "transparencias" de Saturn lol
Thoughts Part 2
1. The roller coaster on Saturn version has 2 tracks while Playstation version has 4.
2. The magma in the mine stage has a smoother animation on the Playstation version. The Saturn version there are rough edges of the image repeating.
3. World 4 the clouds are closer on the Saturn version.
4. World 5 the saws on Saturn version move in almost unison. While gates have more cross bars. The Playstation version the saws move at different lengths. The gates have wider openings.
I think somebody saw "transparencies" on the PlayStation spec sheet and decided that they should use all of them. As the Saturn version is a later port, it's hardly surprising that they tried to simulate them all, albeit with meshes.
Saturn version looks and plays better.
I already looked it up on the internet the thing is Saturn has better 2D graphics than a PlayStation 1 but the PlayStation one has better 3D graphics
@@mushra50compared to what kid? Have you ever owned a Saturn? Have you been gaming for more than 33 years like me? No, you haven't, it's that simple. Let me tell you that many 3D games on the Saturn would never run on PS1 hardware, it simply can't handle it. And while the Saturn had complicated architecture, it was, and more powerful in every way. For example, go play a game like Panzer Dragoon 2. And tell me what you think afterwards, because it's one of many 3D games that wouldn't run on the PS1 in a million years. I've spent God knows how many hours on both systems for the last 25 years, so I know exactly what I'm talking about. And you don't, I've forgotten more than you'll ever know son.
@@derekbuckler9888 They tried porting Radiant Silvergun as well to no avail.
Also, I would make the argument that, thanks to the simpler architecture of the PSX for devs, it's worthwhile to redo a game from the ground up. Well it's true porting games is much more challenging from the Saturn, they probably would go through the trouble to instead make a new PSX version. Especially knowing the sale rate has a high enough chance to make their work back and more.
Nowadays, thanks to said simplicity, a handful of the more popular PSX versions of Saturn titles end up being picked for compilations. Though it does suck since the Saturn ones are definitely superior.
@@mushra50 I don't agree, sorry, but I don't. I have both systems, and the Saturn's VDP engine is quite impressive. Again, if you haven't played any Saturn games. Then you would understand what I'm saying, you can look that up on the internet all you want. Granted, your entitled to your opinion. But the Saturn on many occasions showed superior 3D capabilities, like the Panzer Dragoon series.
@@derekbuckler9888 well that's your opinion
Can we all just appreciate that the player character's name is "Rando?" Could this be "The Amazing Rando" Tom Servo said is destined to do battle with Eastman?
Eastman? Who came out of the East?
@@ghaleon128 The very same!
Valeu pelo video1!!!
Some of the enemy death vocals are ripped straight from the arcade version of "Joe & Mac"
I never heard of this game until today, but now I want to download the iso file and play it.
Hope you had a good time.
I remember this game getting previewed in a 1995 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly as a PS1 launch title. Wonder why it never came out in the U.S?
If I had to guess, I'd say its because its not that impressive looking. It looks like a late-era 16-bit title.
Because SCEA at the time had a “No 2-D games” policy.
Bernie Stolar, he was head of PlayStation 3rd party relations. His policy was no 2D and no RPGs. He left in 96 and joined Sega. It's why there was a JRPG explosion on the ps1 after he left. He's why Working Designs left Sega and release games on Sony consoles
I find it very interesting how the devs "saved" the ps1 version by changing how the player dives into the world, but clearly saturn in the end also looks & runs better in every way
wow , I have always thought this game was exclusive to PS1 . Sega saturn version is faster than PS1
I always thought of the character being played as Mike Haggars long lost brother from Japan.
Is Nekketsu Oyako Japanese for Bob's Burgers? :P The main character looks like Bob on steroids. ;)
TH-cam needs to work out some more glitches and bugs 😆 my other comments ended up on this video instead of the shortvideos that i switched over to while i was on this video egich i had to delete 😆
W Saturn
The company who made this game (Techno soft) is owned by sega, would be nice if we ever see this got a port to modern platforms, for anyone who wants to play it though it's available on PSN for PS3, PSP and Psvita (only in japan)
The PlayStation version has the proper transparency throughout, whereas the Saturn is stuck with that dithering.
There's two places I could notice for sure unintended slowdown:
1. The roller-coaster stage, where, even though the Saturn footage starts a little earlier as per usual, the PlayStation version ends sooner. And this is relevant because it's really the only stage I noticed is auto-scrolling, which means it's not the person playing who determines how sooner or later they get to the end of the stage or the next checkpoint. So that's clearly a result of more slowdown on Saturn. And this is despite the PlayStation version showing more tracks on the roller-coaster and shadows on the player and all the enemies, which the Saturn version doesn't have there.
2. The later stage with the multiple swinging spike balls on chains, where they clearly slow down much more on Saturn anytime they smash into a bunch of enemies.
Other than that they look about the same to me, with the possibility they maybe set the player movement a tiny bit faster by default on Saturn, the PlayStation version is maybe using slightly more/nicer colours at times, and I prefer the Saturn's level intros and the moving background in the player select screen.
I have my sound off, so I can't tell if there's any differences there.
Analog pad exists but doesn't look like the image in this video
I wish many more games like this had come out for those systems.
Games like this were not going to sell powerful new consoles though. There's precious little in this game that a 16-bit system couldn't do.
In the rollercoaster level, the player and enemies in saturn version do not have shadows. 🤔
I miss PSX transparencies in Saturn, but if I had to choose, I like Saturn graphics better, they look more detailed, crispier overall, and colors, again, are more vibrant. PSX has the transparencies on its side, but that's pretty much it
never know it on Saturn too 😮
I'm going with the Saturn here.
The music sounds a litte bit different.
The most of Saturn games was only for japan
Saturn!!
I have the ps1 version its good but I wish I had the Saturn version too.
Brutally slow gameplay.
Que game loko.
The lack of transparency on the Saturn was a mistake from Sega (one of the cpu could, but the other couldn't, and using them together wasn't easy)...
Sega just didn't seem to know *what* to prioritize with the design of the Saturn.
As usual, Saturn struggles with handling transparency effects between sprites. When viewing the sea in Saturn's version, the image isn't smooth. This is similar to the issue with the Genesis when playing Mortal Kombat, the shadows of the characters aren't as smooth as they are on the SNES. Despite these technical shortcomings, I still love Sega, though there were a few things that needed adjustment.
PlayStation 1 won this
they are practically identical, but a slight advantage on the PS1 due to transparency (and because it came out first).
Saturn version looks far better, especially on a CRT, with a ton of more nuances and some effects like parallax scrolling in World 2 part 1/2.
But. PS1 version is far more stable. Far less slowdowns. And I think that does matter in a beat-them-up.
And. PS1 version is much cheaper than the Saturn one, though both are expensive to be honest.
Saturn Wins!!! More animation & effects
PS1 Wins!
Olhando eles parecem ser iguais.
O aspect ratio é melhor no psx. 😅😂
Nothing matters with sega Saturn 🪐
th-cam.com/video/IbE7rH8f7mE/w-d-xo.html the console behind the glass is unique to the system 😄
The PSX sound chip. Upgrade from the snes 8 channel / 4bit. Now 24 channel / 16bit. Still out of tune. The Playstation is showing more colour depth.
I think it's important to mention that PS1 version was actually a launch title for the system back in 1994 while the Saturn version was released months later. Something to keep in mind!
No excuse
Saturn clearly wins
Both looks same, but saturn is smoother.
Its easy to see why they cancelled the Western launch of the PlayStation version. This wouldn't have made me want a PlayStation.
PS1 has actual transparencies, the saturn meshes are awful. PS1 here.
actually the Saturn Engine is Better than the PS. However, the Saturn programming language is difficult for game developers to learn. also the Unique Saturn CD Format, making it difficult for game developers,
Saturn Engine is Better than PS
But Making a Game on Saturn is Very Difficult...
it's easier to make a game on a PS1 machine whose format is a regular CD Rom
What are you talking about? Saturn used regular CD-ROMS.
Wow, i didn t remember this game was so bad and not fun...
Saturn wins
Saturn wins.
Saturn wins, just about.
PlayStation version looks better but the Saturn plays better. Alot dithering and meshes used on the Saturn version so shadows, lights and transparencies look ugly. But the PlayStation version slows down anytime there are more than 3 sprites on screen.
Saturn é melhor
Crap game. Awful sprite work, terrible use of hardware tricks on both systems, it looks like a bunch of low tier Amiga and Atari ST developers got together in their golden years to make this.
Who in the right mind would pay for a Saturn more than a Playstation?
you're 30 years too late for this conversation.
@@timkasansky2528 lol
true
I had a choice between the Saturn and N64 and chose the N64.
@@mich722 All N64 owners waved that choice
@@dbnpoldermans4120 I had a PSX first, bought in 1996.
Anything 2d is going to look amazing on Saturn, do a 3d comparison and you'll see that playstation blows it out of the water. Saturn also had 0 transparencies like genesis and used dithering instead
SONY PlayStation wins!
O personagem é A MISTURA do HAGGAR + CODY do FINAL FIGHT.
