Bug, the legend, the Saturn mascot nobody gives credit too... A gem forgotten by time, underappreciated and misunderstood... This is still one of my most favourite platformers of all time, the thing's difficult beyond belief and its level design's expansive and truly magnificent; Its sence of wonder and scale cannot be described, it's got to be experienced. Man, the team behind this game did a spectacular job in their approach to 2.5D; Every corner fully loaded with imagination and wonderful mechanics. Wish it got remastered one day and into a collection with the sequel added in; As a bonus, have that draw distance expanded, along with HD rendered sprites of the original models and boom, bang, done! Wouldn't be against a remake either, quite like Crash and Spyro, and have an option for the player to switch between the old and new engine on top of that... Although for that, they'd need a proper team to ge the job done, since the people behind the remade Panzer Dragon, failed, hard, not only to understand the artstyle the original was going for, but whose lack of care culminated in controls that are poor and animation unrefined... Wouldn't want Bug, to go the same route.

Poor Bug!. The little guy just didn't have the "it factor" that Mario, Sonic, and Crash had, and I think the creators knew it: they tried to get him over by making his backstory be that he was a Hollywood film star. That's no great sin; it was, as they say, the style at the time to try to lend credibility to an also-ran mascot by association with other media: Bubsy with old-timey Warner cartoons, Gex with television, and Bug! with movies. The truly iconic mascots succeeded on their own terms. But from a gameplay perspective... wow. True 3D platforming, before Mario 64, using a fixed camera angle and straight planes going in all cardinal directions to simplify for the player what needed to be done. And there was still room for elevators moving in all directions, enemies attacking from into or out of the screen, etc. It wasn't hugely groundbreaking, but it translated 2D platforming tropes into a real third dimension in a way players could understand, and deserves much, much more credit for helping to establish 3D platformers as a genre.
I hereby declare this longplay to be the first 100% run of this game at all. I couldn’t find another video that does it and there are also no complete text walkthroughs anywhere. So I grabbed some sheets of paper and started to draw maps in order to find everything in this game. This longplay contains now all Bonus Coins/Rounds, all the pathes and all (reachable) crystals. I even uploaded some maps to Gamefaq. The game itself is kinda unique. It’s not a 3D platformer but it is not a 2D game either. Some stages have utterly complex pathways. Some secrets can only be found if you jump down from it. There is a sequel called Bug Too! which I will longplay also some time
Now that's old school dedication. Before we had the internet to look up maps, we gamers had to make our own maps by hand. And we were thankful for it! LOL 🤓
My friend and me played this game (Windows PC Version) when we were still in primary school. The parents of my friend installed it on their computer. So I didn't have the game, we could only play at my friend's home. Bug was our favourite computer game. Sadly, we could never finish it and I exactly remember what went wrong. We had reached Burbbs but we had a lot of problems with crossing abysses by jumping on insects which were constantly moving up and down. We tried and retried but failed every time. Of course, we didn't give up. But then a disaster happened: the computer of my friend's parents started malfunctioning. Diagnosis: harddisk almost completely full (remember, this happened in the nineties so harddisk capacity was much lower than today). So the parents of my friend had to remove all stuff which was not essential. To the horror of my friend and me, Bug was considered as non-essential (in our opinion Bug was the most important thing on that harddisk). So ... bye bye Bug and Burbbs was the last world we saw. Thanks to this youtube clip, I can see Arachnia and the ending scene. I had to wait almost 25 years for that ;-)
The Saturn had some really good games. It's such a shame that Sega was directionless when it came to this system. It had tons of potential. Oh and as for BUG, I played it to death.

I really liked the fact that there were secret areas, even though I didn't know how to reach many of them. Watching this playthrough gives me a fun sense of nostalgia and intrigue, and I thank you so much that you played and then uploaded it!
How many games of this era had left right, up down,back ,forward ,anti gravity sideways scrolling? Not many! I Loved this game! The music has all the hallmarks of being really annoying… but it’s just not, it’s perfect for the pace and the comedy noises fit so well. What a gem of a game.
Honestly, after knowing about the troubled development of this game, the fact that it was released on July 26, 1995(a year, 3 months & 6 days before Bubsy 3D) & also that the game has good graphics & gameplay that looks fun REALLY lets me know just how BAD Bubsy 3D truly was.

I still have this game on Saturn. But would love to see a remaster of it for Nintendo Switch. Just like the Panzer Dragoon remaster that recently came out. Also would be cool to see BUG!, Toe Jam & earl, Earthworm Jim and Booger Man on Smash Bros!
Man, this game takes me back. Still have this and the sequel and I had a lot of laughs with it. Sure I did use a level skip cheat to finish the game, but I still enjoyed it. I think a remastered version of this game would be a good way to bring it back. Besides, with Hollywood the way it is nowadays, a good parody of the film genre is in order!

A pretty good videogame that was impressive in Summer 1995. Super Mario 64 made it “obsolete” but the modern indie scene made it relevant again. I enjoyed it s lot at the time, but its repetitive structure and lack of save feature really hurt. Today, I’d recommend playing with a level select code to skip ahead. Great gameplay video, very comprehensive. Kudos!
I think Bug’s level design and exploration style gameplay would have worked better with a non linear level and game structure, a bit like the original Toe Jam & Earl.
Played, beat and long forgot about this one...the animation holds up incredibly well, even if the graphics have not....I suppose an HD port is outta the question...

Funfact : These sounds came directly from CD audio. You could put the game into a CD player and listen to all of them. This is also a giveaway that this longplay is emulated because on the real console you would have delays for all the speech samples since the CD laser had to grab the track first,
Rumors say that before Sega created the Bug character this game was intended to be a Sonic title, but they decided that it could never hold up for that so they used it for a new game
