    10 years later!!! And you saved me I couldn’t get out my truck fast enough hearing that dinging. I just cut it and tucked it back in harness so it won’t ground itself ever again. Thanks so much

    Thank you Daniel!!!
    I had taken the plastic covers off around the steering column to work on my older Ford explorer's column shifter. Then after putting everything back together, I opened my driver door and was surprised to hear the ignition chime sound without a key in the ignition or the headlights left on. So, after a few minutes of trying to figure it out myself, I did a few Google searches, and found several overcomplicated replies referring to it being a possible electrical problem with the car and so on. Then I watched a couple of TH-cam videos until I finally found yours, ( and it did the trick)!!! Of course, it did however take me awhile to figure out how to put the ground wire thingy back in place on the ignition. I was a bit confused even with the video, but I eventually realized that the metal piece on mine was already bent downward, (not straight), and probably just needed to be inserted back into the slightly obvious, similar sized, small gap that was just within reach on the ignition switch, to make the connection. So again, Thank You for making this video. It made my day! Peace.

    1998 Ranger. Removed bottom steering column cover by removing 3 screws from the bottom and pulling down and out on the bottom cover. Did not have to remove ignition key assembly or top steering column cover. Found wire and copper tab and gently pulled it out of it's notch. I bent the copper tab just a little. Replaced the assembly back in place and checked to see if dinging had stopped and it had. Put key into ignition and dinging would start as long as the door was open but stop when the key was removed. Thanks for the help.

    After messing around with this for the last 20 min in a 2014 E-150 it appears the upper portion of the ignition shroud is what holds the chime ground in place. I think most people will find the problem comes right back after you bend the contact. Best fix in my case was to factory delete the whole wire...its a beautiful thing to not open the door to that annoying chime...even with the keys in it! Like a real machine now.

    I just watched 5 different videos on the subject due to my chime issues. I am not fond of yanking wires or jumpers on wire harnesses and I’m glad you showed me how to fix the actual problem as opposed to workarounds. Thanks for the clear video focusing on the right way.

    Thanks for posting! I will try this. My 2004 B2300 has annoyed me for a while but I have finally become motivated to fix it because I found that the chime for key in ignition overrides the "headlights on" chime. So I have left my lights on a couple times as a result.

    Thank you for this video. My Mark VII was doing the same thing and my hunch was the chime was caused by key-in-ignition. After watching this video, I went to my car and within 20 minutes I completed the fix. No more chime unless my key is really in the ignition. Yeah!

  • @Swampster70

    Thanks for the info! I had the same problem and your video helped me fix it for free.
    One thing I did notice after I had everything apart and put the clip with the offending copper strip on it back in is that you could probably just pull the ignition cylinder and "massage" that strip down with the side of a flat blade screw driver without having to remove any of the trim.

    Hey to make a funky beat with that😂🎉 but no seriously my 96 Ford explorer sport every time I leave the battery connected and the keys not even in there and it will keep on making a ding ding ding and then unlock an lock the doors and keep on repeating so if you know what problem that is let me know please cuz I'm still listening to the ding but I have to leave my door a little bit open not all the way I make sure it clicks one time but if I fully shut the door did my Dora the explorer goes haywire just like I said before the locks will go up and down and It will keep on making the dinging noise unless I disconnect the battery 🤷🏼‍♂️

    I just followed similar advice on stopping the chime in my 1997 Cougar. The chassis manual instructions do not match the actual steering wheel cover designs but once I found the "anti-theft warning switch" (the actual name) I just wrapped electrical tape around the contact end and gently placed it back in the lock area where it will not contact any metal. The alarm system was also triggering thirty seconds after either the lock switch or remote arming, so I accessed the left rear trunk module package and simply disconnected the factory alarm.

    Thank you for this tip- I pulled the lower cover and found the plastic and metal 'switch' loose and constantly grounded. Any time the door was opened the chime sounded. Now I've tucked it down and clear of any metal and no chime EVER which is what I was looking for.

    • @twirlyboggs
      @twirlyboggs 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dylan Thomas same thing here, but a few weeks later my FACTORY theft box fried. I want to know if this was coincidence or not. DID YOU have any problems after you tucked away the connector?

    • @digitsnetnet
      @digitsnetnet 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      twirlyboggs Sorry to hear that. NO problems since this hack on my 1999 Ranger. I am pretty sure the circuit is like the door switch for the dome light- just a ground signal I don't think anything you might have done with this switch could have damaged the factory theft box.

    This video is key.
    Just one thing I would add. The little piece of plastic that holds the contact on mine was loose and there did not seem to be anything holding it in place. So I took the additional step of wrapping electrical tape around it and around the body of the whole shell where the contact gets inserted so as to hold it more firmly in place.

    So after I had the steering column replaced 6 months ago, which is when the chime problem started (in their defense the guys who did it, said I could bring it in to fix)... the wiper/turn signal switch finally went. Decided it was time to fix both problems, Daniel got it right on the money. Only thing I would add is the attachment for the ground wire didn't quite fit right anymore, it would jiggle and start dinging after I straightened the tab. After a couple on/offs of the column cover... I used some electrical tape to secure the connector in place. Works great.

    Where is the chime located? I've traced so many wires. I found a red blue powers the chime somewhere inside the steering column but I cannot find it. Is it inside the ignition? Or where is it in the steering column? I'd like to remove the acutal chimer. Any pics greatly appreciated.

    That old Ford chime going fast like that kind of annoys me, which is why I prefer the newer chime in Ford’s newer vehicles.
    I like both older and newer cars too. But it would’ve been nice if Ford didn’t make the chime beep that fast, for the headlights and the seatbelts like that.

    So did yours chime without the key in the cylinder when the door is open? Mine does. It wasn't the lights etc. I disabled the Ignition Key warning switch terminal and it stopped. A lot of people are cutting the wire. :( Me no like. You just disconnect the Ignition Key warning switch terminal. On my 2002 Mustang it's the black/Purple wire that leads up to the Ignition Key warning switch terminal.

      2000GT Yeah. The new Ford chime is better than this stupid faster version of the old chime. Kind of makes you think of 2 things. Why do some people prefer this fast chime over the new chime? And what was Ford thinking when they started putting chimes into their vehicles in the early 2000’s?

      I'm guessing at the figures I read a year or so ago but the VW "cheating" was microscopic, and the EPA acceptable air quality standard was at least 1,000 times worse - for the actual figures, dig around at

      The beeps should matter, if you have a check engine light that flashes, the amount of flashes mean something. The beeps dont. If you put the key in and you hear it beep 3 times and turn the key, or wait and hear it 15 times and turn the key, it doesnt matter, its to let you know the key is in.

      My truck is doing the same, I would say yes. I'm going to remove the wire right now and then see if the battery is still charged

    Yeah I'm sure that's my problem also, my driver side door unlocks on its own. Even though I have the key with me. It thinks the key is still in the ignition.

    I had a similar problem but it turned out the ignition cylinder was gummed up and sticky. Put some alcohol on the key and unstuck it.

    I,m going to disable this " feature " as I am sick of hearing that bing-bing . So far no one has said how to ID that wire... I mean without tearing the dash apart. Tell everyone the size , color and routing of that wire. A quick snip and no more problem. Think in depth guys !
    Now... basics on " rear door is ajar " bypass.
