Yo, in the scene where Riza shoots Lust, she actually DOESNT run out of bullets. The last gun she uses holds six; and she only shot it five times. She saved the last bullet for herself if she confirmed Roy was really dead 😭😭😭

I love how riza isn’t a stereotypical female “baddie” who’s an asshole and has no emotions, she feels deeply and is able to show it in the most traumatic moments making it more emotional and meaningful for the viewer to watch
It's a shame Hollywood can't learn this damn lesson. That people love badass female characters if they're just GOOD CHARACTERS. Hawkeye's one of my favorite female anime/manga characters of all-time. Her English VA definitely helps with that too. It's reasons like this why manga/anime are still continuing to dominate the western markets over comics/movies nowadays. It's a shame so many western female characters are so terrible because they just make them into men (not even likable men) instead of letting them be badass while still being women.
@@jeremycampbell4021 yeah, take examples from marvel like She-Hulk and Captain Marvel and the problem is pretty clear: they’re too OP, hate men, invalidate those who have experienced more than them and are overall awful people.
There’s nothing wrong with hard ass badass women. But if that’s your only portrayal of badass women, then there is a severe lack of imagination and understanding of nuance. Sometimes being an asshole works for a character, but also, being kind as well as stalwart works for a character. As a writer, one needs to learn which works where.

Also Ed's teacher has a similar thing. She's such a powerful baddie, but her remorse over not being to have children is painful because you can feel it in her words and actions

Another kinda Royai scene is when Riza asks Ed if he loves Winry. This may look like an Edwin scene, but Riza realizes that Ed loves Winry because of his desire to protect her, and she literally joined the military to protect Roy.
I know!!! I love the parallels between their relationships. Two of my favorite OTPs of all time, and you never see either of them kiss!
Still and edwin scene too tho. I ship Edwin and royzai so hard 😭

Not to disagree but she didn’t join the army to protect Roy?
She joined the army because of what Roy said - that he was protecting their citizens and he was proud of it. It was also why she gave Roy access to the tattoo on her back- she believed in his earnest belief.
And then the war happened, and she realized she had been too naïve. That’s why she asks him to burn her back- both as a punishment to him (to hurt her) and to free her.
She follows him into hell afterwards because at this point, she trusts in his guilt for his role in the war, and wants to see him fulfill his ambitions - because maybe then, her part in his crimes (w/ the alchemy) will help /her/ come to terms.
And of course they obviously do care for each other. Arakawa never tells us how well they knew each other before Roy went to the military but I loooove them.
EdWin and Royai have a lot of parallels but IMO the biggest parallel is just their trust in each other. they’re both childhood friends to lovers- we just see Royai at their peak while EdWin is still developing ❤️

Here's a fun thing; when Envy is in disguise as Mustang, he says "stay right by my side" which tips Riza off because that's not what Roy says! He says "watch my back".
No, I don't think that's it. Right before Mustang ran off after Envy, he orders Riza to stay behind and that "I'll take care of him myself". And when he saves Riza from Envy a little later, the first thing he says to her is "don't interfere, Lieutenant. I told you I'd take care of him myself." When she goes after him, Riza knew that Roy was going off the deep end, and so when Envy!Roy tells her "well you might as well help me kill him now that you're here"--- *that* is what tips Riza off, bc as Roy proved when he arrived, she knew that he wouldn't want to accept help in killing Envy at this point. The whole reason why he's going off the deep end in the first place is bc he wants the pleasure of torturing and killing Envy himself, which is why it's so hard for Riza, Ed, and Scar to talk him down off the ledge, and why Riza pretty much had to pull out the big guns (no pun intended) to get him to see reason. Riza knew that, so Envy!Roy's easy acquiescence (and w/o any prompting from Riza) was like a big klaxon warning bell that something wasn't right.

I just think about the fact that Riza’s tattoo isn’t completely burned off which makes me think it was emotionally too hard for Roy to remove the whole thing 🥺🥺
One person did a deep analysis of the tattoo and it shows that Roy burned the most important parts in order to spare her more pain.

We don’t see a single kiss in this series, but the character interactions we see are so well done that we have no problem accepting certain ships as totally canon.
It seems so much more natural than a lot of ships imo
In the manga, after Riza is healed and Roy is hugging her, you see a speech bubble above Mei’s head that says “careful, if you hug her too tight, her wound will reopen”. We all know this ship is canon.

Ok, so there’s a seen in the manga when Roy and Jean are facing off against Lust and Roy asks Jean if he told Lust anything about work (Because Lust was pretending to be a human and was Jean’s boyfriend.) And Jean replies with something like “I know better to mix work and my love life.” And I feel like that was a jab at Roy like, “Dude, you and your lieutenant have been in love for the past who knows how many years and neither of you have bothered to act on it and it’s driving the rest of us crazy.”

A small detail that I love is that when she’s shooting Lust, Riza “Hawkeye,” a character known for infallible pinpoint accuracy, misses. The one bullet that just grazes the shoulder would never have happened if she wasn’t in a pain that should could not regulate or rise above like she normally does. It’s heartbreaking honestly
I know, it's so heartbreaking! But even this scene is actually showing her amazing shooting abilities, since even if she isn't shooting perfectly, because of her breakdown, she is still shooting better than a regular soldier...

I now feel REALLY STUPID, because I forgot one of the most interesting scenes: when Riza is working under Furher Bradley and he talks about how everything in his life was chosen for him- except for his wife, which throws Riza off, because he has the one thing she can’t have. THE WRITING IN THIS SHOW Y’ALL
Also he defends her like when Kimblee provokes riza during the war or when one of the Bradley wannabes grabs her and he yells to let her go.

as a gun guy i have a other thing to point out. every time she points her gun at roy she breaks two of the biggest rules. 1, never point your gun at something you aren't willing to destroy, and 2, keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot. being a trained marksman she would know these rules like the back of her hand and always follow them. she has 100% intent to kill in those scenes. her promise to keep him in line is absolute.

Every time I come back to FMA I always find it refreshing how normal all the characters look. So many anime turn the moe up to 10000% and they stop looking like people and all look extremely similar to me. Everyone in FMA has pretty unique facial features which I always appreciated.

I feel like the keyword here is "openly", even if that wasn't a direct translation, we can deduce it. Their dynamic reminds me of forbidden love trope. They can't officially be together, but they live accordingly. In my perfect version of this story, they can't be open, but it still exists one way or another. There are unfortunate sacrifices, but it's fine for them.
Riza is literally known as the Hawk's eye, but she didn’t once hit Lust's tattoo. If that doesn’t really say something about her mental state in that moment, I don’t know what does.
No offense but did she even aimed for her tattoo? The scene was about her, blindly attacking Lust out of rage, she literally has no reasons to aim in a specific spot on Lust. Plus, all bullets, that she shoot find the target
Well the tattoo is directly where her stone is located, and there’s clearly a shot focusing on it yet Hawkeye misses the mark
Heck she even grazes her shoulder instead of landing a direct shot
@@thecatastrophe132 Hawkeye didn't see her stone or where it was though, hell she probably didn't even know she had a stone in her, for all Riza knows at that moment she could BE a stone, meaning anywhere she shoots is actually the stone. I don't think she was trying to aim at the tattoo.

THE PAIN IN HIS VOICE
This is the kind of romantic scenes that actually work. No cheesy “I love you, let’s get married” after just 2 days knowing eachother like some films. In this show you could see their bond building up in a realistic way
I'm fully on-board, but to be clear, I don't think we're watching them "fall in love" over the series or whatever.
Dude, these two BEEN in love. This is a couple that's been dating, fully committed to one another for YEARS. I completely believe they have secret "get-togethers" every once in a while if they believe they won't be seen, but they're worried about people seeing or overhearing them otherwise. But, they don't hide it well, and everyone knows they're in a secret committed relationship.
That's why I love them SO much, it's an actually compelling portrayal of a couple that's already together and has been for a long while. I love it when a show is willing to portray couples like that!
Oh I definitely think this, Riza’s scene in the second episode was enough for me to know that they’ve loved each other since long before the show started :)
I don't think they'd risk secret get-togethers- fixing the country is more important to both of them, and if they get caught, Riza could be reassigned to another unit.
That said, everyone probably knows how they feel about each other, but the military can't regulate feelings.

In the whole anime, Riza's hands shook as he held the gun only twice, once when she thought that Roy was dead and once when she thought she'd have to shoot him to keep her promise to him.
Fun fact: If you look at Riza's tattoo and look at what parts were burned, you can see that Roy only burned the most important pieces so he wouldn't have to burn it entirely.
There are a few analyses online that can explain what the tattoo means and everything which just adds so much more...

The final battle was so good to them it isn't even funny. Riza, who has the "hawks eye" literally being the person to aim and throttle Roy, and Roy fully trusting her and being able to follow her instructions to the letter as the one person with flame alchemy and helping her stand. They became one unit, literally!
Ed and winry are cute together but Mustang and Hawkeye damn what a relationship they have. They are so mature and they understand each other to some different level. ofcourse they have been through so much together, at the war and the flame alchemy stuff it just makes them inseparable and what they have is so pureeee and it's something beyond love. I just can't..

I’m not exaggerating when I say that I want my future partner to be as intuitive with me and I them as they are with each other. They know what the other person is thinking without having to do anything different. They read each other so well. If your partner can’t do that then what’s the point

I agree, the ideal partners don't need "normal" ways to communicate and empathize with each other, there's just a "click." The "normal" helps, because it can't really hurt, but that "click" is the important thing.
Personally, I believe less in "one true love is put there waiting for you" and more in "there are several potential ideal partners, you just need to find them and build that ideal together." A bond like what Roy and Riza have is extremely strong, tempered not only by their feelings but by the time they've spent together as well. No one should expect that level of strength from a stranger. It can get there, though, it's just a matter of time, like most things.

I adore how perfect their relationship is, especially at the final battle. Mustang loses his eyesight, luckily his gf is a sniper. I also love that they hold each other up in the manga, really visualizing how Mustang has held her above suicide for so long. He’s given her reason to keep going.
I love how perfectly they compliment each other! She’s his anchor and he’s her guiding light.
People forget that Riza became a marksman in the military. She was so good, she became a sniper. The fact that she missed a few shots/some shots only grazed lust during her emotional breakdown says something.
I always squealed at their scenes in the show. I also loved Ling and Lan Fan’s relationship to bits (another forbidden love, but even Greed ships it). It was interesting seeing how Riza and Lan Fan were the only ones King Bradley talked about his wife too-and I’m glad that you noticed it in Riza’s case. If you ever need someone to squeal to about this-I’ll gladly listen (since I do the same).
YES i wrote a whole tumblr analysis about Bradley telling this stuff specifically to Riza and Lan Fan. I love this line he says as he's dying after Lan Fan asks him if he has any message for his wife. "There are no more words that need to pass between us now. That’s what it means to be the wife of the Fuhrer." Which I personally think is forshadowing. Who do we know that happens to want the job of Fuhrer? Who do we know who read his partner's eye signal as she lay dying herself and knew exactly what she meant? Who do we know that can understand each other perfectly without needing to say anything -- even over the phone? HMMMMMMMM
Riza also understood why Ling was so distressed when he left Lan Fan in the sewer alone, which was why she drove where Ling directed her, even though Bradley saw them.

One detail about the phone call scene you missed: before then, Hawkeye had practically been on the verge of a breakdown after her confrontation with Pride, and just one brief phone call with Roy where he pretends to be drunk is enough to put her at ease.

Im rewatching this again and I also way over analyze the phone call scene, but its truly subtle story telling at its finest. ITS SO GOOD AND TELLS US SO MUCH. and your analysis of Riza's apartment broke my heart.
so here's my copious analysis:
Despite the risks any interactions between them outside work can present, Roy calls Riza for apparently no reason expect to check up on her. Already that alone says a lot. But of course he can’t ask her straight out how she’s handling her current situation so instead he masks it with goofyness and plays it off as being drunk and suggests giving her the flowers (bc ofc she’d be the first to come to mind). He keeps up the lighthearted flirtyness he starts with, and clearly expects her to reciprocate it. Which also says a lot about their friendly nature with each other and natural inclination to fall into easy banter. However, in her slight hesitation he senses something is wrong and he picks up on it in a split second and fully snaps to being attentive and worried asking her several times if something happened and if everything is okay. And we can see that that takes Riza by surprise. Almost mimicking the audience, because that’s also when we are given an even deeper realization of just how connected they actually are from how well he seems to be able to read her. But of course she can’t say what is wrong, and so she reassures him, and cuts him short by thanking him while apologizing for not being able to accommodate his flowers. Understandable, given that it’s too risky for them to meet outside work at all. And even though her thanking him here sounds like part of the script, I truly believe she means it when she says “thank you for thinking of me” because his phone call was exactly what she needed right then.
Despite the fact that Roy doesn’t transparently ask how she’s doing, we see that she can easily recognize the real intention behind his call that he masks behind the banter. And the slight smile of relief on her face shows us just how much it meant to her. And her remark about his uncanny timing just solidifies the power a simple call from him can have, showing us the important place they hold in each others life. Even though she wasn’t able to share the fear of what she found out with him, his concern and worry for her is a much appreciated reminder that she is not alone. I think it is also significant that the next chance he gets Roy seizes the opportunity to sit with her at lunch, no doubt the uneasiness he picked up from the call still on his mind.
also side note, about the code: she is actually using his alchemy code. Which is a huge deal, because alchemists guard their research code so well, even Al doesn't know Ed's code. But of course Riza knows Roy's because they are married okay

I'm going to say something did Mike Moss sacrilegious given the environment, as much as I am like someone who always had the fan ship of Riza and Winry, Roy and Riza is hands down in my opinion be most beautiful and Well Done romance that has ever been displayed in an anime. There's so much color to it, and so much authenticity, and unlike a lot of the romances you get it's just very honest. There's not any signaling of it is not this oh look these people are together look at how together they are isn't cool that they're together like over-the-top that you typically get. It comes across as a very genuine relationship that's been going on for the years that the characters have been together. If you read the manga in that part of ep54 when Roy let Riza put down her gun, he removed the glove so it wouldn't accidentally let out sparks and hurt her. A really subtle detail but I love it Q__Q

I just realized Riza saved Roy when he was fighting Lust, too! She shot Lust 23 (!) times and all of those bullets would have killed or at least severely injured her, if she had been a normal human. When Roy burnt Lust then, she tried a last attack that only didn't kill him, because her philosopher's stone was out of energy and she couldn't regenerate herself anymore. So if Riza hadn't injured Lust so much, that she needed to use a lot of energy to regenerate before (apart from Roy she was also probably the one injuring/damaging her the most), she would have had enough energy to pull through with her last attack and would have killed him...

I’ve always loved the detail that Riza’s apartment is so barren. it tells you so much about her character. she hasn’t lived in central for very long and she is so devoted to her work that she hasn’t unpacked at all. she’s the exact opposite of materialistic. she only needs the bare minimum, she’s a solider, why would she own a flower vase. I love Riza, she’s in my opinion one of the best characters in the show

This right here is why I absolutely LOVE Travis Willingham. No matter if it's voice acting or D&D he always puts so much raw emotion into his characters! He's a wonderful actor and never fails to deliver.

I wonder if Arakawa was ever aware of the popularity of this couple and if she realized how she really just wrote the best tragic romance story in all anime.
There was an interview with Arakawa for the FMA live-action, and Tsubasa Honda (the actress who played Winry) asked why she didn't delve deeper into Roy and Riza's past. Her only answer was because it wasn't relevant to the main story. Needless to say, Tsubasa was shattered lol. But look, even celebrities ship it!

But seriously, one of my dearest wishes is simply to have a spinoff about these two leading up to and after Roy becomes Furher, their marriage (and possibly ending with their execution because I love pain)
1:50 Actually earlier in the episode, we see Riza loading the gun with *6* bullets. She only shoots *5* . Meaning that she was saving the last bullet for herself, and didn't run out of bullets. I just made myself cry with this.
The contrast is what I find compelling
Ed and Winry slowly fall in love with each other over the course of the series, but neither of them can bring themselves to say it out loud.
Whereas you can feel that Roy and Riza are already in love by the time the story starts, but they never say it out loud because they don’t NEED to.

One of the few anime/manga couples that make me want to scream "Kiss already !"
Okay, I randomly wanted to find a clip of Roy "having perfect timing" calling Riza and unknowingly comforting her, and I found something even better!
It's one of my favorite moments. Riza just had her life threatened by a Homunculus wearing the skin of a innocent boy who can manipulate shadows. She doesn't feel safe in her own apartment anymore. Every shadow looks suspicious and she's alone and on edge. But just hearing the sound of Roy's voice puts her at ease. And then the way Roy just senses her unease over the phone.
And then the way she hugs Black Hayate while thinking of Roy (perhaps imagining embracing him as she embraces her dog).
Their bond is shown so subtly yet so powerfully over that brief phone call!
Another thing I'd like to add after she goes berserk (1:18), and he and Havoc are recovering in the hospital, is he reprimands her not to "get worked up by believing what the enemy told her". What's more is she must "never give up the will to live" because he needs her "to watch his back".
They keep each other grounded at the most crucial points of the story. They need each other to balance each other and it's absolutely wonderful!
(Why do I still remember this despite having read the manga and watched the anime more than 10 years ago? 'Tis the power of a worthy OTP folks!)

It’s wild how this anime has better romances (Roy and Riza, Ed and Winry, Izumi and Sig, Lan Fan and Ling, Al and May) than any shoujo anime I’ve ever seen. They’re not as overt or ~cute~ but they’re all so realistic, even with them all being so different. I don’t usually get attached to straight relationships in shows, but the devotion, the trust, the deep caring, the comfortable familiarity that comes from being with someone for a long time in these relationships had me bawling
I get so tired of the stupid instant love/harem relationships in anime. I definitely needed this. It's good to remind myself what true love looks like.
