Nyssa, part of what is so appealing about your videos is the fact that they are in-the-moment-organic and NOT on-purpose cooking videos. Your vids are truly unique, inspiring, and entertaining as well. For me, the single subject cooking videos can get old after a while - repetitive, stale and boring. So, keep doing you, I really enjoy your vids. That garlic butter/spread looked sooo yummy. Thanx for the video :)
The roasted garlic butter is so so good, I really need to do a bunch up and freeze it before I can't get cheap garlic again lol. If I leave it in the fridge we just eat it!

Oatmeal in an insulated cup. Absolutely genius. I am forever making it and then it gets cold before I can actually eat it and I don't like it reheated in the microwave. Thanks for the idea!
I wish I could find cheaper ceramic lined ones because I’m not a huge fan of the stainless! But for the moment they work well :) and I can print them with stuff for the kids!
Nyssa, you are doing a wonderful job cooking and the videos are great as well. I don’t know anyone male or female that cold freeze while they are preparing hot meals for their family. You amaze me. If anyone deserves a kitchen it would be you. I know you battle awful medical issues on top of the cold. TFS!!!🩷
Nyssa, I have a stash of pillowcases and some white socks that I use to cover some of my kitchen gadgets like a sock on my pasta attachment and a pillow slip fits over that and my Kenwood mixer.
I have even taken to taking the pasta attachment off and putting it in a container, but I think the oil and stuff just attracts dust and dirt and it creates these black streaky lines in the first lot of pasta if I don't use pasta to run through it first... its odd, maybe its the roller, because its a generic one, not a kitchenaid brand one!
I like Peanut Butter, but I'm not a huge fan of it in things hehe, but the kids really like it, and its a much better tasting protein than a lot of the bean based ones lol.
Love what you cook and I am always amazed what you manage under challenging kitchen circumstances. The length of the videos don't bother me. I will watch whatever you put out! Regarding your need for a break now you are doing a longer 9 week stretch between Brisbane visits; could you do a daytrip to Toowoomba for your buffering supplies so you get ALDI prices and some downtime. Sometimes even a few hours out without children can function as a mental health break and help with cabin fever.
I think you have the perfect life...I love camping and cooking outside...I love cooking over a wood fire outside and the grill as well...I have a oven that I set on the grill to bake breads and anything that that needs a constant temp to cook from the top as well as the bottom....it is sold as a camp oven but basically its just a metal box you place on grill the place ur food in....cooks perfect without burning...Amazon sells them as well....ours is old..it s at least over 40 years old it was my parents cooker at their campsite....now I am squirreling...lol
I use something similar for my pizzas, or I think it is hehe, the biggest issue is lack of space, anything like that is very limited in size, and trying to do things like time dough so that I can cook one tray after another is challenging, which is why I was considering a big oven, to be able to bake 2/3 full trays at a time would save me a lot of time, its that whole, do I spend the money to save the time, because time is money! lol
These are brilliant! We also currently have freezing mornings and cold cereal just isnt cutting it, but porridge takes me too long to make on the stove 🥲 definitely going to try this
The stuff I make on the stove for them always has whatever I have, or I make like a coconut/nut toasted topping as well (though I should make a jar of that and they can add it to their instant stuff for a texture thing!) We normally have dehydrated apple pieces around and Kavik loves those too! Lots of flavour combo's avail :D
I’m allergic to oats too. I use rolled or flaked wheat, spelt, barley, rye, einkorn or a mix of them, they make a great substitute for oats. Same mouthfeel with a tad more flavor. Making an instant version would help on those mornings when the coffee takes forever to kick in!
@@savannahv1808 I've seen some of the grain mixes at Honest to Goodness and wondered how they'd go, a more diverse flavour profile and potentially nutrition there too, I might have to order some to try at some point, but rolled oats are just so cheap.. and sometimes that's the reason I use something lol.
@@savannahv1808 I have a gluten allergy so stick to what I know. Cereal for me is gluten free weetbix, made from sorghum. I prefer toast with honey, or scrambled eggs with veg for breakfast
@@OurSmallFootprint If you get a chance to try them I think you would like the flavor difference, I have to pass on the mixes most have oats in them:( You’ve given me a lot of flavor combo ideas, I was stuck in a rut. Thank you!
Yep filming anything to make sure you have it all is a lot. Even when I set up to film on purpose meals take twice as long LOL Then there's the editing which you know ... LOL
I plan my meals 2 to 3 days in advance because otherwise, I forget to take things out to thaw or some other mishap will occur. Tonight we had chicken korma with broccoli and rice. Tomorrow is fried potatoes with beef burgers and roasted squash. Saturday is ramen with leftover pork. I'll figure out Sunday's meal sometime tomorrow. I get the struggle.
I definitely try and do similar, when I'm pulling something out to make something, I pull another protein out of the freezer so that I can use that the next day. I can be slack at it though lol, I do love the ability to cook some frozen cuts in the pressure cooker mind you! that always helps!
What a fantastic idea, easy for most to do. Meaning I can do it. I baked a lot of garlic a while back, have it frozen, thinking I might defrost it, add butter, then I will have the garlic butter to go.
Hehe, It has definitely made mornings that bit easier while the temps are so low. I'm going to try a bunch of different flavours, I have some things added to my lists for this supply run :D
Lol, oooh, embroidery threads are so fun to shop for, I used to do tapestries a long time ago, my fathers new partner taught me when I used to visit him as a child! Sonnet has attempted cross stitch before, but only with the plastic gridding and the big plastic needles, she did quite well, but I just don't think she's got that long term concentration yet to want to finish a bigger project as yet!
So I posted origami paper but then googled correct paper required. Then I went to plan B because I don't think I have it correct. So plan b on the way.
The kids really enjoy it! I'm still a fan of full rolled oats lol, and slow cooked on the stove! But it works really well in this patch of really cold weather :D
When you go to costco next look for the big tub of peanut butter powder. Also look at allulose as a sweetener. It's like monk fruit but doesn't have the after taste
Do they have it there ? I definitely will! There is a choc almond protein I bought from there a few trips ago too for using with the kids and they weren’t keen initially but have actually used almost the whole tub over the last month and quite like it, so I’m going to price that one again too! Thank you :D
Hi nyssa love the videos as they are ❤️ . The last video u were cutting up chilli for cowboy candy and said it be on next video is that coming next 😊 I love garlic but my hubby fussy bugger doesn’t like it 😂
I'm not a fan of cinnamon , so i use groubd mixed spice instead. I use one of Dr Brian Mosely's recipes where you saute cut apple in butter and the spice and add it on top of your porridge.
Fresh warm fruit over porridge is amazing! We do get a bit fancier on the edges of winter when it isn’t so cold, we’ve been cooking it on the stove until only a few weeks ago when the temps really dropped heh. I’ll have to try the mixed spice! See if D prefers it
I like your cooking videos as it makes it more achievable. I’m not your level of cook but it’s easier to see what’s doable and also what I can attempt. Do you have a proportion for the instant oat serve? How much of the mix with how much water? I might have missed that in the video
You inspire me with every video I watch. What are you thinking about long term with your kitchen? Do you think you will enclose it so it’s easier to heat in the winter?
I don’t think I ever want it completely enclosed but definitely putting a back wall and shelving on it when we re orient it, there’s more time each year hot than cold, so I feel like it makes more sense to address that :)
I think it works really well in their routine, they get a cooked lunch when D and I make breakfast, but still have something warm and filling for the morning!
I liked this video format! And while I love the idea of oatmeal mixes, my kids are not eating breakfasts just now, and I have a texture issue with oatmeal porridge. I can get cream of wheat (aka wheaties or wheatlets) here in Canada and quite like that with far too much brown sugar on top LOL. Do you have cream of wheat in Australia? And I totally understand how you would need a break/reset! Your mental health and self care is so important. Hopefully then you can generally keep your shops at 6-8 weeks for your own sake. ❤
They like weetbix which are a wheat based biscuit thing that goes to a sludge when wet hehe, potentially similar. But they’re not keen on it hot, when I was a kid we’d add boiling water and a splash of milk and have hot weetbix, they eat them cold though, but it’s just so cold of a morning atm I wanted something filling and warm to self serve, I shall google cream of wheat though because I have heard of it before.
I was thinking I might make a topper with chia seeds, I like to toast coconut and slivered almonds etc and mix it with some chia and then they can sprinkle on top, they like chia seeds in their smoothies and stuff though, so I don't think they'd have an issue with them, I considered LSA as well, but again more of a sprinkle then added into the mix that way it isn't hit by the boiling water!
Someone suggested mixed spice, I think I shall try that next! I love cinnamon mind you, and Darryl doesn't actually eat it all that often, I could prob make a small jar just for him without the cinnamon and go back to using cinnamon for the kids and i :D
I used to wear some chunky sterling silver, mum would buy it for me for special occasions 21st etc, and I loved it, when I was pregnant and feeding the twins and then Kavik I had a lot of skin issues and my neck would get red raw and blistery so I had to stop wearing metal, I bought myself an amber necklace when I bought some for the kids (we used two diff coloured amber necklaces to tell the twins apart for a few years lol) because there is theories that the amber is good for skin issues/inflammation and I dislike that little crease at the base of my neck that is there because of my weight lol, it always looks dirty because of my skin tone too! I found it didn't irritate me at all, but over the next few years, even though I didn't gain any weight it seemed to get too firm around my neck, so last year for my b'day I splurged and bought a slightly longer one with an extender, except once I got it it turned out I could wear it without the extender, so I put the extender on my existing one and now I have two hehe. So there was a purpose originally, but really, I just like the look of them :D
@@MrMrsmartin86 that’s an idea, but we’d have to have the power to do that and first thing in the morning that’s not always feasible, it would take too long in the bbq too I reckon, hrmmm
I know you probably might not want to BUT lol if you set up like a go fund me account we could help you get your stove. I sure would donate and I’m sure others will. It’s not something to feel bad about. I know of a lady that her husband was deported and she followed him to his home country. They had lives on TH-cam and people donated like crazy to help build their house! We love you & your family and however you would do it I’m pretty sure your fans would love to help you to get your kitchen together ❤
Naww, thankyou Mary. We will manage though, it will take time, and juggling of things and prioritising of tasks etc, but we will manage! We need to get the rest of the kitchen finished first! lol. We've got the second hand roofing, we got a quote for the steel for the frame work, after next supply run the plan is to order that and hopefully get the roof up, then we can start rearranging and redoing the floor!
I liked how you jared after prepping all the instant porridge ingredients. I understand how kids are with portions and mess etc but I still don’t think I would have prepped filled the end three end jars. Perhaps choice of ingredient combo could be done from the original jars by the individual. Older ones can supervise the younger ones putting choices together. Sweetness is a preference, I know. I think too much emphasis on adding sugar into the mixtures. Don’t mean to be harsh, but meals without sugar to that degree would be better for them. I sound awful don’t I. I can’t help but think they’ll leave home and just be drawn to the sugary instant porridge sachets from the supermarket instead of learning to make porridge for breakfast. Sorry.
They would end up adding more sugar than what I put in, its a kid thing, they think they need more, and then they make it inedible and then its wasted, by doing it like this it works better for portioning and less wastage :) I also did a really quick nutritional panel up to check the sugar per 100g in my base recipe in comparison to uncle toby's sachets and I'm already using just over half the sugar :) The kids know how to make real porridge, but it was -4 in my kitchen this morning, this is a much simpler thing for them for winter :)

There is a choc almond protein I bought from there a few trips ago too for using with the kids and they weren’t keen initially but have actually used almost the whole tub over the last month and quite like it, so I’m going to price that one again too! Thank you :D
Great Vlog
I love your content. The oats were very interesting. Thank you
I love the realness of your videos! The food looked delicious 😋. I love oatmeal too and don't care for the cold overnight oats.
I prefer the texture of rolled oats. But for nice simple filling brekkie, I reckon this works!
Hi nyssa love the videos as they are ❤️ . The last video u were cutting up chilli for cowboy candy and said it be on next video is that coming next 😊 I love garlic but my hubby fussy bugger doesn’t like it 😂
Thanks for the idea.
See if D prefers it
Good video
I like your cooking videos as it makes it more achievable. I’m not your level of cook but it’s easier to see what’s doable and also what I can attempt.
Do you have a proportion for the instant oat serve? How much of the mix with how much water?
I might have missed that in the video
It’s about equal portions, so half cup oats to a generous half cup of hot water, depending on how thick you like it! :)
This is a great idea to let the kids make their own porridge!
I think it works really well in their routine, they get a cooked lunch when D and I make breakfast, but still have something warm and filling for the morning!
@@OurSmallFootprint You are a great mum! You are always making sure they have plenty!
Good ideal.
I think it will make mornings a bit smoother in these temps!
Im so keen to try this porridge mix. How do you find chia seed as a protein bump?
I was thinking I might make a topper with chia seeds, I like to toast coconut and slivered almonds etc and mix it with some chia and then they can sprinkle on top, they like chia seeds in their smoothies and stuff though, so I don't think they'd have an issue with them, I considered LSA as well, but again more of a sprinkle then added into the mix that way it isn't hit by the boiling water!
Were do U get Elephant Garlic from for cooking is there a wholesale place or online???
😅😅😅
Have you tried brown sugar and ground ginger or cardamom in stead of cinnamon? Not sure it will work but thinking as an alternative from D
Someone suggested mixed spice, I think I shall try that next! I love cinnamon mind you, and Darryl doesn't actually eat it all that often, I could prob make a small jar just for him without the cinnamon and go back to using cinnamon for the kids and i :D
@@OurSmallFootprint no reason you should miss out lol cinnamon is awesome, was going to suggest mixed spice but couldn’t remember if it had cinnamon
That was one day?? Oh my. I feel so lazy all of a sudden!
Is there a meaning behind your necklaces?
@@OurSmallFootprint nice I thought they might b something like that ☺️
@@OurSmallFootprint can they help us lose weight 😇
I warm my over nite oats
We tried warming them on the stove and it just didn’t work well, but I could just soak them in minimal liquid and try adding hot water the next day!
@OurSmallFootprint I've warmed mine in the air fryer
@@MrMrsmartin86 that’s an idea, but we’d have to have the power to do that and first thing in the morning that’s not always feasible, it would take too long in the bbq too I reckon, hrmmm
@@OurSmallFootprint I didn't think about the power 😕
Sorry.
They would end up adding more sugar than what I put in, its a kid thing, they think they need more, and then they make it inedible and then its wasted, by doing it like this it works better for portioning and less wastage :) I also did a really quick nutritional panel up to check the sugar per 100g in my base recipe in comparison to uncle toby's sachets and I'm already using just over half the sugar :)
The kids know how to make real porridge, but it was -4 in my kitchen this morning, this is a much simpler thing for them for winter :)
@@OurSmallFootprintmy gosh -4 near Toowoomba this morning!? Geez I couldn’t. So glad we live in Sunshine Coast (hinterland) now. -4 is wild.
@@BonnyP-69r it was -1 when I checked at 7am here heh not as cold as it has been! But we’ve got -5 forecast next week!
