- Tifa obviously knows Zack but she pretends as if not.
This is probably the 1st & crucial moment in this game that players may notice the hidden link b/w Cloud, Tifa, Zack and Aeris from the past.
My first playthrough I named my Cloud after myself, Zack. I was very confused by this scene as a kid
I got into kingdom hearts before ff and I always liked axel but I thought he was exclusive to kh, started reading about cloud and seph’s lore until I noticed my name was part of the wiki. Apparently someone with my name is a reoccurring minor boss that works for shinra, goto his page to see what he looks like and holy shit it’s axel.

Zack, bullied physically and mentally by Genesis, was good friends with Sephiroth but had to fight him cause he went crazy, forced to kill his mentor Angeal, was experimented on by Shinra, the company he worked for, for four years, was on the run for almost a year with one of his good friends Cissnei tasked to capture him as well, not to mention being alone in that time dragging an incapacitated Cloud, not even allowed to visit his parents for their safety, just wanted freedom but is massacred by a literal army, not being able to reach Aerith and fulfill their promises to each other.
Basically, he already went through so much but he still carried Cloud knowing that his chances of surviving will drop significantly by doing so, and all just to reach Aerith but this is how they do him.
They did him dirty… 😭 one of my fave ff protags

The real sad part is his parents still don't know he's dead. I'm pretty sure Cissnei and the Turks pulled a few strings to keep his death a mystery same to Aerith who believes Zack is missing pretty sure Tseng told her that.. pretty sad.

It's her being in denial. Aerith knows when people die, she can sense it in the Lifestream, she knows deep down Zack is dead.
@Aaron9 it's called subtext dude, it's what makes writing good: characters don't just come out and say what they are deeply feeling, what they really mean is written in between the lines. aerith's behavior here is at direct contradiction to her words. she runs out of the house at the mention of zack, can't face cloud when speaking about him. we already know at this point that aerith is deeply connected to the lifestream in ways that normal people aren't............... i'd recommend a bit more analysis and critical thinking before taking everything at surface value and calling someone else a dumbass.

They weren't that close. Cloud doesn't even talk about Zack beyond one talk in the Highwind once post-recovery.
Galten play crisis core, they were very close. They became friends and realized just how alike they were, Zack also began mentoring Cloud a lot and they have really good chemistry and good dialogue. The fact that they were in a comatose state for 5 years and Zack protected cloud for another year is just the icing on the cake
im currently playing cc ff7 right now. I would recommend for people to play this game because it is canon to the storyline and the prequel to ff7 remake.

To be fair, Crisis Core rewrote a LOT of stuff regarding the Cloud, Zack, Aerith connection. Like how originally he didn't get a chance to say jack squat about anything before he got gunned down, and originally, he didn't actually seem to care about finding Aerith all that much

I just love how the music accurately tells the player how they should feel here. Without the sound, I probably wouldn't have understood the impact the developers wanted me to feel. I could watch this and think, "Oh, Zack just went missing, maybe we'll come across him in our adventure! And Tifa seems to know him too, but is being a little shy about it. I wonder if this is going to lead into a love triangle between this guy named Zack, and Tifa and Aerith."
But with the music, you know as the player that when Aerith says Zack is 'missing', it means he's dead, and Tifa isn't embarrassed about fooling around with Zack, there's a painful memory that she's hiding related to Zack. I honest to God think Uematsu is a Beethoven figure in the video game industry. There are so many iconic tracks that he's made across a wide variety of genres, and I believe Final Fantasy would not be as well regarded as it is today without his work.
The music carries so much in this game, it's crazy

I don't know if Aerith meant what she said about Zack but that was pretty cruel. Little did she know that Zack was actually trying his hardest to get back to her
I think she knows.. She's just probably trying to hide her feelings. At that point when Zack fell from battling the Shinra troops, she somehow sensed his life was gone. After all, she is able to "speak" with the planet.
5 years is a long time. she probably moved on but obviously still loves him and is shaken when he hasn't even returned to his parents.

I haven’t played this game since I beat it in 1998, 20 Years ago, and every day that has gone by, I have stood by the fact that it was the best video game ever I’ve ever played. Funny enough, I hardly remember much about it. Watching this scene though, I remember why. These characters were gold. They all had heart, and they told a story. FF7-forever one of the greatest adventures. Huge thanks to the makers of this game.
The funny thing is in CC when Zack and Cloud escaped Nibelheim and were on the run from Shinra, Zack actually went to visit his parents in Gongaga. Cissnei of the Turks talked him out of it, saying Shinra will ambush him there.

Cloud didn't remember Zack, his parents are still waiting for him, didn't get his news for 10 years and they think he doesn't care about them, Aerith doesn't seem to care that much, Tifa can't tell anything.
I didn't remember this scene. Maybe because I didn't know Zack back then. He was just in flashbacks.
Since CC, he became my favorite character of all the time, he was such a hero and he was sooo adorable. He did so much and yet nobody seems to know at that time.
The things Aerith says...I think, it's a matter of translation. In US version, they often change what they say to make more "impact".

I don't remember if you have to bring Tifa and Aerith when you get here, but this scene could be missable if you need them in your party to trigger it.
And as for Zack, you've gotta go through a few hoops to get his full story, so I can totally understand not really vibing with him until Crisis Core

To be fair this game came out before CC. So yeah Aerith’s words sound cruel. At the end of CC I’m sure she is aware that something happened to him. And I’m pretty sure for the remake the dialogue will be different.

I remember seeing this scene for the first time as well as others that reference Zack (like the playground). I disregarded these scenes, having no idea of the importance of his character. The first time his name is mentioned by Cloud in the lifestream with Tifa, I just stared at the text box with my jaw on the floor for 10 minutes, as I all at once realized this huge story arc. I still didn't understand a bunch of crap until later but still, what a twist.
alright, its really clear aerith is in full denial mode here....she knows zack is death but she simply decided to think that he disappeared so she can move on, but but deep down she is still hurt.

The main character walks around wielding a sword from his superior (w/out knowing that), telling everyone he is 1st Class (w/out being that), hanging with a Flower Lady who dated his superior (and doesn't know that sword is his) and a Leather Glove Lady who knows everything but won't tell a thing.
Tifa was a huge pain in the ass, damn her and her secrets.

Retroactive so disregarded. FF7 established that Cloud showed obvious signs of violent behavioral dysfunction and Tifa herself knew enough from both what happened in Nibelheim and from coming across Cloud in his ruined state at Midgar to doubt what he said.

aerith covers her face and leaves the home at the mention of zack - there is no denying how deeply she still feels for him. so deeply that she can't even talk to tifa about it: they're standing at opposite ends of the town. she tries to downplay this when cloud asks because she wants cloud to like her, but can't face him while saying it was just her first love (read: true love), he was a total ladies man and probably found someone else, although she knows damn well he died thinking of her. this is still hard for her to accept, over five years and 89 letters gone, so i think she tried to explain this feeling away to mask her pain, even though deep down she knows it's true.
tifa has her own reaction which is separate and less clear than aerith's. she also leaves at the mention of zack, but for very different reasons: she's unsure how cloud will react if she speaks up because she's seen him break down before at the reactor. she remembers zack, but also knows that cloud's story at kalm directly contradicts what she remembers. it's also probably pretty strange for her watching cloud face something she knows is a contradiction, but he clearly doesn't. so she decides to give him space and let him approach his puzzle at his own pace.
cloud is frustrated and confused with tifa's distance (he seems indifferent to aerith, although it's clear she is also hiding something). i always felt at this point deep down cloud and tifa know they have feelings for each other but just aren't admitting it yet. tifa is keeping something from him, and he's clearly bothered by it, and when he confronts her she locks up and denies that she knows zack. but she's keeping this from him because she knows there's something wrong and doesn't want to set him off. in his shame of his own weakness cloud causes division within himself (among trauma from experiments and mako poisoning) confusing his identity with zack, cloud is preventing himself from allowing tifa to get close to him, which is actually one of his deepest desires.
deep, potent, subtle, emotional, brilliantly written scene.

Yep, I like how Tifa always has Cloud's best interests in mind, always caring for him. Her and Cloud just make more sense. And I also like to think Cloud gets jealous in this scene. BRUH the way people here downplay Zack's good nature is CRAZY. Even if we take out CC as a factor in, the fact Zack still went to rescue Cloud and bring him along despite Cloud's catatonic state reduced his survival rate greatly already speaks SO MUCH about him! TAKING CARE OF CLOUD DID KILL HIM! Also, Zack bothering to go to Midgar despite, Idk, WHERE SHINRA is, means he has someone he wants to meet there. Zack could easily find work and a new life with Cloud somewhere else, but still went to Midgar even though it's the most dangerous. Zack is 1st Class - he's not THAT dumb. Even before CC we already get implications he's trying to see Aerith 💀💀

Well, I know the comments are old, but it seems like some of the commenters here didnt play the original FF7. Cloud forgetting Zack should happen in FF7 remake as well. Bcus this is one of the most crucial part of the story and his character. If Cloud didnt forget about Zack, maybe Sephiroth couldnt manipulate him so easily, and theres no need for the lifestream scene where Tifa tried to repair Cloud's broken mind and memories

It's really heartbreaking because Aerith believes he just forgot about her, but she was the last thing on his mind and he was trying to get back to her.
In the original story, Cloud doesn't remember Zack because Jenova cells are capable mocking and reading ones memories. Basically, seeing through a person. Normal soldier members are to be able to stand the change and still function as their own self....Cloud was a weak minded person before the change so his life was all fucked up afterwards...the cells read Zack's memories and a weak minded Cloud took on the persona of Zack, not able to function like a true soldier would. When he met Tifa at the train station when he got to Migar, he started to read her memories too. He goes to Migar to follow the other brain washed experimented for the reunion...those ppl in black capes seen threw out the game..the special powers of soldier became his own enemy because he wasn't fit to be in soilder PERIOD....it's all in the Creators book if you think I'm lying...that's how Sephy can read Cloud's mind...because Jenova cells can read threw ppl and Cloud was ended up being only a test subject to find Sephy and follow his every orders
it's funny, really. Cloud, a basic Shinra Trooper who was incapable of becoming SOLDIER, saves the world thanks to a large dose of Mako poisoning that messed up his mind and thinking he was something that isn't.

I think people need to realize that Crisis Core altered the story to make Zack more sympathetic. So you can't really get mad at the original game.
Crisis Core didn't change anything, it just filled in the blanks.
It did change Aerith and Zack's relationship. They weren't a serious couple in the original game.
That's not the problem. Just when you play FFVII and reach this part of the game, youknow nothing about Zack (this is literally the first time you hear that name), so it's normal not to feel anything. But when you replay the game (or play after Crisis Core), you can feel all the important things that are hidden in this scene.

Zack might have seen it as more serious but Aerith in Japanese on the playground never actually refers to Zack as her boyfriend but the first person she really liked so the localization made more out of it than Square ever intended. And if you don't believe me who knows the language then search for it on youtube because apparently there is at least one channel that covers some of the Japanese text.
No crisis core improved on a big plothole and ff7 fanboys can't accept it.

At the time it seemed like nothing, but there is a subplot where Tifa always knew about Cloud and Zach, and was hiding the truth from Cloud to protect him.

I'm amazed how many people played CC (a sidegame/spin-off) without having played FF7, and as a result identify more with the character of Zackwho in the original is a technically important but almost entirely off screen and unmentioned character. it just seems so strange to think about playing Crisis Core without playing the original first, cuz you have no context really for anything that is going on... Especially when I think back on how before any of this compilation stuff existed people used to argue the cloud Tifa Aeris love triangle

I played Brood War before playing Starcraft, and Warcraft III before the other games.

Thinking about Zack just taking in consideration the events that happened in FFVII is almost impossible. That's why FFVIICC works perfectly to complement his character and give him a shape.
After Zack got his form, which was a tragic hero who sacrificed to protect his best friend, people decided their own thoughts on the matter, and let's be Fair (heh), Zack's freaking better than Cloud when all the cards are on the table, at least, for a lot of people.
Lunos Ouroboros I'm not knocking your opinion, but you kinda contradicted yourself there, by saying "people decided their own thoughts on the matter"...but then going on to suggest that Zack is somehow DEFINITIVELY (as in, in a measurable way) better than Cloud. I happen to disagree, because I think Cloud is a much more unique and interesting character in the history of video games, whereas Zack, while admittedly hugely loveable, is kind of your run of the mill "Wise-cracking wannabe hero who seems extremely immature, but is eventually shown to have a big heart and a serious side, and then BECOMES that hero!" dude. He worked for a spin-off 'side' game (which is what CC is), but he never could've carried a 3 disc epic like FF7...in my OPINION, anyway.
Ever since Cloud's first migraine after hearing Aerith say it in the remake, I've been dying to find out how they are going to handle this scene in the next game.
I imagined that Cloud's gonna have much more vicious migraines, which caused him to see quick flashes of Zack.

woww if you ever play Crisis Core and then immediately come to see this this part(something that I didn't get to see when I first played FFVII) , is kinda nostalgic because the whole plot of CC is about Zack quest to become the best 1st class soldier, the pursue of his ideals and also Aeris who is such a lovely character there, you can feel the lovely chemistry between them both. And after all that this is the end of that story(not intended because this FFVII was first released), I can almost relate to Aeris feelings and feel bad for his parents and also for Aeris herself knowing the fate she will face latter.
People who said Aerith are "heartless" or something like that by her line needs to play CC(either for the first time or replay it again). She waited around 5 years for him, actually wrote 89 letters to him but never got a reply(thankfully Zack did knew about her letters), and just heard that he didn't contacted his own parents for years. Obviously, this is too hard for her process. Especially in her last letter, she said that she won't send him any more letters. Meaning at that time she already given up and tried to move on. Of course, whether she actually moved on or just pretending to is up to debate considering when meeting Cloud she is instantly reminded of Zack. Her line saying that he probably found another woman is mostly a denial, as she should know that there is a possibility that Zack had died, even more so as shown in CC ending.
Also, I don't really trust every word said in this game. The translation can get wanky sometimes...
I think she just hiding her feelings for Zack remember, Zack's friends are the turks, I'm sure Tseng told aerith what happened to Zack after they failed to rescue him outside midgar. Zack is the only one who became close friends to all original members of turks.

It's subtle, but it's crazy that aerith is in denial over Zack's death considering she knew when her foster mother's husband died in the war. Aerith knows when people die because she can hear them through the life stream. So sad.

@@danomitedan Nothing in the game suggests Tifa doesn't remember the Nibelheim incident. She remembers who Zack is. It's a sensitive subject for her because she knows when Cloud is telling the Nibelheim story, it's not true and also that he had seemingly taken Zack's role.

It's the brilliance of FFVII's that it really plays with the way the narrative misleads you to what the plot is.
Like in this scene, the narrative makes you think the plot is indeed about Zack having had a relationship with Tifa, or hell, that maybe he even left Aerith for Tifa, but when the plot of the game is finally revealed all Tifas weird interactions suddenly makes sense.
This is also why the narrative makes it seem like there is a love triangle going on while in the plot there never was one.

I can't wait for this scene in FF7 Rebirth. However, one plot hole here that was most likely an after thought is that Aerith most definitely knew Zack was dead because, like Elmira's husband, she could sense when people died and returned to the life stream as an ancient. And in Crisis Core, when Zack dies, it's raining. It shows a scene of Aerith in the church looking up as though she could sense Zack's return to the life stream. Also curious why Tifa felt like she needed to completely lie to Cloud about knowing who Zack was... Anyway, I can't wait to see how this plays out in Rebirth.
i don't think it's a plot hole. we can deduce that aerith was most likely in denial of zack's death, and that him leaving her for another woman was prolly a lot easier to accept than him dying.

I love in this game how, depending on totally circumstantial decisions, (who you bring where/ when, what environments you interact with) you can start to piece together the truth from very early on, or be completely blindsided by it.

and starting to make an illusion that cloud is zack n crisis core, zack and cloud were trapped in scientific experiments for 4 years and then zack escaped and freed cloud also. but cloud suffered from mako poisoning. after that, they were on the run for about 10 months while cloud was in a comatose type state. later, they were caught and zack is gunned down by a shinra army, as he's dying, a weak and bearly conscious cloud crawls over to him, then zack says basically, you have to live for the both of us, you're be my living legacy, gives cloud the buster sword and then he dies. cloud after that goes to midgar and about two weeks later, final Fantasy 7 starts. basically, thanks to mako poisoning and the traumatic death of his best friend, he couldn't mentally handle of all that so started to believe that he was zack fair to cope with all of that.

When I first played FF VII back then, I spend two or three hours to try to obtain a new scene with the parents when Cloud will tell about what happen to Zack but this never happen. I returned in Gongaga many times after discover the truth to "speak" with them. Without the web in 1999 when I played the first time, I was thinking I missed something to discover all the dialogues. It was logical for me but Square didn't care about it, curious for a game like this, a big project with big attention.
I believe this will be fixed or change in the Remake.
I also kept checking up on them wanting to learn of this Zack mystery character.

Once you find out who Zack was and what happened to him in FFVII, you couldn't tell Zack's parents what happened to him. They just asked the same questions as to what happened to him. Hopefully in the remake you can give them closure once Cloud's identity crisis has been solved.

@@shevafavian6127 It's quite a long story but in a nutshell, both Zack and Cloud get Mako poising from Hojo's experiments and Zack's memories are fused with Cloud's. For a while Cloud forgets who Zack is but retains some of Zack's own memories. Cloud believed he was in SOLDIER and was second in command during the mission at Nibelheim when in fact those memories belonged to Zack. Cloud was just a Shinra trooper assigned to the mission who hadn't yet become part of SOLDIER.
There are probably better explanations on TH-cam or somewhere on the internet. Regardless, I hope that makes sense.

The think I hated the most about FF7 is how Tifa always lied to Cloud. "I don't know Zack, you arrived in Nibelheim with Sephirot, you became 1st class SOLDIER".
I always thought there should have been another cut scene where you can visit Zack’s parents after you trigger the flashback sequence in the Nibel Basement. Cloud should be the one to tell them what happened to their son and that would be a better way for him to unlock the Omnislash Limit Break
I really hope they go for this direction in the remake instead of having us grind Battle Square points for Omnislash LB again

I have played through this game many times and never even thought to take Aerith and Tifa to see Zacks parents!
Now the memory is just flooding back.
So just how crazy when we plays the FF7 original, thoughted that we used to plays a main character named by Cloud. But in the end, or atleast when Cloud mind was repaired by himself and Tifa shared a big hand to help him. We just realized a truth that we were played a guy actually named by Zack Fair and Cloud is just a normal guard who was taken an order to follow two SOLDIER: First Class to come to Nibelheim.

Ya know, I think Crisis Core amps this scene a little. Zack being gone for 10 years, but being unable to see his parents when he visited Gongaga a year before the main game. Feels, man.
My God, it almost made me burst with sadness when Aerith said that, "I don't really mind that I haven't heard of him." Man, it makes me feel even more sad that she doesn't know what happened to Zack, that he sacrificed his life to save that bastard she's talking to that's basically stealing her girlfriend.
Well yeah it's sad. However it's realistic to a point. She's probably lying about not caring to a point. After 4-6 years she never heard of him that'll do that to a person. But Zack's a hero bottom line, and only 1 person who's relevant knows what he did and that'd be Cloud.
She still loves Zack for sure :0 and Cloud can never steal Aerith :)

Sherly Gusman Aerith doesn't strike me as the kind of girl who would believe that her boyfriend, who also happened to be a SOLDIER unexpectedly disappeared because he must have found someone else. Like you said, she is clearly denying it to herself to avoid the pain while deep down she knows that he is gone.( Isn't she a Cetra? and how does anyone explain why at the end of Crisis Core she looks up to the sky in shock while Zack is already dying at the same time?) I think the fact that she keeps denying his death makes their story even more tragic than it already is.
+JayIvan2010 Zack and Aerith were never boyfriend and girlfriend. Like Aerith states more and more, that Zack was just a light taste of love, in other words a crush. And she figured that Zack ran off with another girl, and wasn't surprised, since he got a long with a lot of women. Zack was Zack. Even though she's over him, Aerith still feels sad that Zack is still missing. Hey now, Cloud had no idea who Aerith was when meeting her, his brain is currently under mako poisoning, since he was experimented on. The Jenova cells made him think he was a soldier, that a part of him was Zack. Zack did not take over him, no that would like becoming a completely different person. Cloud took on some similarities too Zack. And so Aerith at first kept noticing some characteristics that belonged to Zack. She then saw how Cloud was much different than Zack, and saw his own characteristics. Aerith could tell the difference between Cloud and Zack and liked Cloud much more than Zack. Not because of Zack's influence, Cloud liked Aerith as well. Since a part of him was maintained even under Zack persona's influence. I hope that explains it.

Fucking Shinra kills Zack after Hojo spent half a decade experimenting on him and Mr. and Mrs. Fair never even got a letter in the mail saying he'd died in battle and was given a military funeral for some kind of closure...also Yuffie has a reaction too because she knew Zack from the events of Crisis Core.
