My pomp turned out to be a throwback . She got up to 16 lbs. But, she wasn't fat. And taller. With a wolf face. She was a beautiful all black. Was the best birthday present. I miss her so very much. ❤😢❤❤❤😢 4:18

I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds exactly like my little guy. He's all black. 16 pounds. Fox face. Very tall... and attatched to my hip. And, of course, severely spoiled. ❤🐾

I have a throwback Pom named Frankie and he is around 15 pounds. He is the best companion and very playful. His one downside is that he barks whenever he hears a car door outside.

My beautiful throwback Pomeranian passed 3 years ago at 11 years old due to the vets negligence. My heart was so broken that I cried constantly and missed him so much. I adopted another throwback Pom a year ago, who has helped me heal from my loss. They are the sweetest and most loving and very devoted dogs.

I have a throwback Pom, and he is such a wonderful boy I can't even describe it: happy, social, friendly, good balance of relaxed and energetic, affectionate, etc. His only downfall is his severe separation anxiety!!! We have done some training to help him through it, but in the meantime I literally never leave him alone. I do Kroger pick-up, drive thrus, etc.; and if he can't come I either don't go lol OR get a dog sitter. But I won't leave him to panic in fear. But yes, throwbacks are the best other than this one (significant) issue!

Your throwback pomeranian looks identical to mine in every way. In fact if they were side by side I would have difficulty picking out which is mine. Unfortunately my Pomeranian Simba passed away 2 weeks ago during surgery for hernia. He was only 7 years old and I had him since he was a puppy. There was nothing he loved more than food and he never knew when to stop. He got into a bag of kibble while I was away and he ended up eating until he developed a hernia. I miss him so much.

We have a Throwback Pom that my husband brought home to me last October when she was 4 months old. I’d just lost my closest companion Emma, there in my thumbnail photo, to congestive heart failure the month before and I wasn’t holding it together very well.
Emma was a miniature Chihuahua, she was never more than 6.5 lbs. Not only did we have Emma, but we also have Sookie 5 lbs, and Thor 7lbs, all miniature Chi’s.
Imagine my surprise when taking a nap, I’m wakened to my husband setting this solid, at least 7lb. by that time, pup on my chest. lol
She’s been a huge help to me in so many ways. She just keeps me so busy all day. I’m disabled, I have MS, so I am home 24/7 with my pups. She follows me everywhere I go, she’s my shadow. She’s incredibly intelligent, and she senses my mood.
She looks like a black bear cub, so we were originally messing around with “Bear” type names. She’s also a comedian, if she’s doing something that makes you laugh, she’ll continue to do it for the attention. One of those things is to walk around on her hind legs like a circus bear, not only does she walk, she’ll mix it up and “hop” on them as well. So, my husband started calling her ‘CrazyBear’… and it stuck. She also answers to just ‘Crazy’. Not very dignified, but there it is.
CrazyBear is a tad over 13 lbs at this point, but it’s our 5lb Sookie that rules the roost. We’re pretty sure Crazy thinks she’s a miniature Chihuahua 😉.

When my Pomeranian puppy grew three times as big as a regular small Pomeranian dog, I thought maybe he’s not pure breed, and he’s mixed with some other breed. One time a girl saw him in my car at a grocery store and told me that my Pomeranian is a throwback Pomeranian. I didn’t know what she was talking about but I came home and looked it up and learned that there is such a thing as a throwback Pomeranian. You are so right about Pomeranians befriending one specific human in the house. That’s exactly how my throwback Pomeranian Kai behaves. I have another dog a Shih Tzu poodle mix Charlie whom I got 8 years before getting the Pomeranian dog, and both of the dogs are very attached to me. They both follow me literally everywhere I go in my house, and they beg to go with me every time I have to leave my house. They both sleep with me. If I am in the kitchen they are sitting there waiting for me to finish cooking, or baking. If I’m in the laundry folding clothes they are there with me. If I’m in the bathroom they follow me there too. I’m telling you they follow me everywhere! Sometimes we are on my bed in my bedroom watching a movie and I have to get up to go get a drink or something and they will both jump off the bed and follow me into the kitchen. although they are both very much attached to me, and always want to be near me, the times when I am gone from home, both of the dogs will be sitting by the front door where there are two windows built into the front door looking out on the front driveway. The dogs are looking out of those windows waiting for me to pull up literally for hours. The Shih Tzu poodle dog will eventually walk away from that spot and go spend a little time with other family members, and then come back to the front door again, but the Pomeranian will never leave that front door even if it takes all day long. The Pomeranian doesn’t want to go to any other family members only me.

The only difference between a "regular" Pomeranian and a "throwback" Pomeranian is their size- that is it. A Pomeranian is a Pomeranian is a Pomeranian. AKC likes to have their own grouping for different dog breeds. They want Pomeranian to fall within certain parameters and everything else is wrong or "throwback". To be correct all Pomeranian are wrong since they originally were up to 50-60 pounds. Another thing I need to make sure people understand- dogs do not just get collapsed trachea. This happens from pressure being put on the throat, using a leash on a collar, pulling over time can cause this horrific condition. Collapsed trachea does not effect only Pomeranian-all dogs are susceptible to this condition. The best thing you can do for your dog of any size is to use a harness. A collar is fine for tags but a leash should never be connected to it, a leash should only be connected to a harness.

Yes! We’ve had a Throwback Pomeranian that looks like a Spitz! He weighs around 25+ lbs and has bonded with my husband primarily, but is my shadow and sometimes clingy when my husband is at work. He has a quirky temperament and often growls while playing, being approached or touched. He sends mixed signals and is filled with “grumpy old man syndrome”. He’s a rescue and we’ve had him since 2015. I am the only one that can groom and bath him and only if he’s in the mood. We must muzzle him for the vet. As he was born 2013, I don’t know his experiences his first two years, but he’s a suspicious, fearful dog that is wonderfully playful, talkative and secure around only my husband and myself. I have another dog that I trained as my service animal that I don’t require anymore outside the home. She’s a calming effect on Anyone. I have brought her to groups of dogs that are not getting along and she does something that corrects the bad attitudes. It might be a strong mothering message, but it’s a mystery to see it happen over and over.

Size is very important to Pomeranian heads. We lost our Patrick in February, and he was always 7.5 - 9.0lbs. but just muscular and not fat or oversized - he was a pure bred. I recently bought my new Gustavo and at five months he was already 11.5lbs. and the breeders have his paperwork to prove he's pure bred, but he was WAY less expensive than his siblings because he is just way too big to show. I think he's got 20lbs.+ in him. and in the month I've had him he's already up to 14.5. Having been the owner of both sizes, Gustavo is a friggin athlete compared to Patrick. He can jump on the bed which is a 12" wooden frame, 10" box springs, and a 10 - 12" mattress with about 8" of blankets and he barely needs to get any speed to jump up there. He is also thick enough that I am less worried about turning him loose on the property (10 acres in the deep woods, Sierra Nevada Wilderness) when the time comes. He's just more robust, and he's also stupid fast. I have run a 5 minute mile in my life, and I can still run very fast, but Gus is damn near faster than me. I can barely catch him. Behavior wise they are both very similar and both have/had a chip on their shoulder(s). Both want(ed) to lead the pack and bark their heads off at *E V E R Y T H I N G* Both incredibly smart and ballsy. If anyone is thinking about getting a throwback, all I can say is: DO IT!

I have a throwback Pomeranian from a rescue centre. Adopted as an adult. I already had an adopted cat and when I retired I wanted a dog as a hiking companion. I had a baby door built so that the cat could be kept upstairs while they get used to each other's smell and sounds. But as I brought him inside, the cat jumped over the baby door, sidled up to the dog and rubbed himself against Gaspode the dog. They have been close friends ever since. They sleep together and play together and the cat even grooms Gaspode. I've even seen Gaspode licking his paw and wiping his face, like a cat. They taste each other's food like an old married couple picking at each other's food. He hated walking at first. I couldn't get him to the end of the road. He'd pull to get back home or just sit down and look at me pleadingly. The vet said I could persist. I decided not to indulge his fears. Tough love. I discovered Gaspode thoroughly loves car rides and he learnt that at the end of the car ride, there is a hike which he will have to endure. And after two years, I suddenly realised he was enjoying the hike. He was relaxed, trotted along instead of creeping along; takes an interest in sounds in the woods, instead of cringing with fear. He is now the eprfect hiking companion. Unlike my previous companion he doesn't dash off into the underbrush, but stays nearby. He ignores squirrels! We are the happiest trio in the whole world.

We've had two Spitz; a Keeshond (Grosse- Spitz), and an 'American Eskimo' (Mittel- Spitz) and they are alike enough to where I think we can generalize across the relative sizes.
Both are exceptional, easily the best dogs I've encountered over my own 50+ years of dog ownership and care. You can't go wrong with a German Spitz! : )

I have 3 Poms. Two of them are standard (7 lbs) and one is a throwback (14 lbs) The throwbacks are much healthier dogs and I actually prefer them. My throwback girl had 3 whelping's between the age of 2 and 5. One per year. And not until after the second heat. After her third whelping I had her fixed as I ran out of friends and family to give them to. I could never bring myself to sell any of them because I wanted to know exactly where they were going and who would be the Pom parents. She had 5 pups each time, we lost one pup out of the 15. I gave it mouth to mouth but it didn't survive. One of my Poms has CHF and due to the CHF also has collapsed trachea. I now have to cook for him as he has to have a no salt diet, no candles, no sprays, no perfumes, cool mist humidifiers in the bedroom and living room that run 24/7 and he gets 4 different meds every 12 hrs. I love these little people and there is nothing I wouldn't do for them.

I adopted Beau (7 lbs) at age 12 and 1/2 as his owner couldn't afford his CHF meds. He was a great pup but I only had him for 1 and 1/2 years before his heart failed. That cough was horrible to listen to; Lasix helped a bit. Now have a 4yo Throwback weighing a solid 17 lbs.

We had one that liked to stay in his crate or under furniture, we did not know why he was hiding and stealing food. It was cushing's disease and he passed away at only 10 yrs old and his body grew to 33lbs. It was so sad, we loved him so, and we did not know what was wrong with him until it was late. He looked just like a fox and was so funny and lively like a clown before he got very rotund and could not walk. I do not know if this disease is genetic. He was our good boy all the way!! Thanks for covering this breed!

My Nardole is a larger pom at a bit over 12 pounds, he’s wonderful and very energetic and indeed hates being left alone…he does well with my 2 senior chihuahuas (one average chi size, one slightly larger), which really helps with the separation anxiety. Great video…thanks for telling us about the throwbacks! ❤️

Rescued a Black and White Pomeranian thinking he was a regular Pom. He was bigger than we expected when they delivered him to us. He was so very skinny and in poor shape, balding, bad breath, discoloration of his eyes.
His before and after pictures at 3/6/12 months didn't look like the same dog. He stopped growing at 17 pounds and just over 15 ½ inches.
Pepper is some where around 14 plus years old according to his veterinarian of which about 12 of those with us. He has lost most of his vision in his left eye. He loves every body.

Great video, very interesting. We have a standard Pom...a really loving, intelligent little girl. She loves her routine and makes sure we stick to it! :) We certainly understand the separation anxiety you described, but now that we are working and studying more from home...she loves it! :) We absolutely hear your advice about being careful with her around small kids when we are at the park...and even other bigger dogs. Even if the other dogs are playful, the size difference can make it risky for our little Pom.

Good job,.. I would add that Pomeranians were bred down from sled dogs in Iceland and then came to what we now know as Germany -- well after WWII is now Poland. So a breed that has moved around the globe and has been perfected by over 800 years of breeding for personality and disposition. Sadly, smaller POMS do have health issues and a Throwback does have less.

I adopted two month old Pomeranian female which doesn’t look like one that I know. She was already 3 lb and after 4 month she is 7 lb. So I searched it and found that she is throwback Pomeranian. I love my puppy and she is so adorable and love to see people and dogs. Yes biggest problem is loneliness, she does mess up the house when I am away. Ripping pads, poop on carpet and so on. I am just wondering how big throwback Pomeranian grow? She is 4 1/2 month old and 7.5 lb.

Hi. I adopted a pom at 4mos. from a previous owner. The previous owner was my sister’s neighbor who realize after a few months with the pup that it wasn’t going to work. So when I received the pup, I thought he would be a standard pom but grew to a weight of 15-20lbs and people was surprised when I told them he was a pom. I reviewed information on the Pomeranian and also found out that he was a spritzer descendent and that he was in the medium group. I also purchased another pom at 2 mos. from a breeder and he is a standard or dwarf group. He will be 2 yrs old this year and weighs 6-8lbs. They get along great with each other and with the cat who is the same age as my older dog. I love my boys.🦮🐈🦮❤️. The video was very informative and I feel that you can’t have too much information when dealing with pets.

However with Biscuit life was all about him as he was super smart, dexterous and fearless and yeah, couldn’t ever be left alone. He cried in the back seat of the car. He climbed a bookcase to get a bottle of Advil because it rattled. Found him with just in time🤦🏻‍♀️

Wanting to get another throwback at some point but don't know how to find them as, from what I understand, their genetics are a complete flook and there's no way to tell a throwback from the rest of a pom's litter. We have exactly what you describe he was supposed to be aTeacup but to be honest I am glad he grew bigger as I was always scared of hurting him growing up with German Shepherds , he is now 12 years old and a great companion to me and goes almost everywhere I go , he is very well behaved and playful and great with other dogs but does not like it when other people touch him ,be they strangers or people we have know for along time , if nobody bothers him there is not a problem , anyone can give him a biscuit or play ball but if they go for a stroke thats curtains , sometimes he surprises me by not having a go but that is the exception to the rule , he is by know means a lap dog but I can handle him anyway I want and he will sleep with me if he wants , he is also good with the vet . He has been with us from 12 weeks old and has never been mistreated so dont know why he does not like people ,but as I say I can take him anywhere with lots off people or even sit around a campfire no trouble ,but if someone tried a stroke god knows , trouble is I don't know who he will not take to , I put it down to little Man Syndrome as apart from that he has been the perfect dog .

My Pom looks so much like a fox that our neighborhood foxes often try to approach him!

Hi, do you have any recommendations for how to get a throwback? I watch Petfinder constantly because I want a rescue, but most of the Poms I see on there are the tiny guys.

Foxie Dog is 20.3 pounds, people think she weights too much, I say she just has A lot of hair.
Foxie was born June 8,2012. She just had her big 10 year Burfday Pawty, picture book cake and lots of kisses

Yup, when I was single, I took my Pom absolutely everywhere & never left him alone. Lucky for us, both my husband & myself work mostly from home so he’s never alone. He’s old now & we never leave him alone… one of us is always with him.
Agree too… Don’t buy a Pom if you have small kids… their bones are so tiny & fragile. Adoot: LA has SO many Poms & Pom mixes available for adoption.

Hey There, do you suggest in the near future okay maybe end of the year I was hoping to adopt a throw back. Would you suggest a female or another male for me. I don't do face book. I love my Hudson but feel maybe a buddy would be good for him. What are your suggestions for me? Or he's fine alone.?
Also he was a retired show dog. I taught him to stand on two feet and turn around, but challenging to training him to sit.
When you're a show dog you don't sit, my breeder told me.

I actually have a throwback Pom who looks exactly like your jimmy. He’s teething really bad and bites everything and everyone. Any recommendations?

Great question. I can't give any professional advice, but maybe try using toys that are a bit of a time distraction, like the Kong rubber balls that you can put peanut butter in. Maybe that will help them to stay both occupied and sink their teeth into something other than skin, lol.
