  • Hey Y'all! I needed to do a deep clean of my shower tile grout really bad. I have been struggling finding a product that could clean the mold and mildew from my shower.. My mom suggested the Lime Away toilet bowl cleaner because she recently purchased from Dollar Tree and used it to clean some stubborn stains in her shower. I was shocked at how well it works. It was such a satisfying cleaning. I know its not 100% clean but its a lot better. I would have never thought to use this product in my shower. This is going to be added to my bathroom cleaning routine for sure. I hope you enjoy this video and it gives you some cleaning tips for your shower tile and grout too.

    A tip for the corners: Wad up toilet paper or use cotton (the strip kind used in hair salons) push it into the corners and all along the edges. Then saturate with bleach or Clorox Clean-up and let it set about 15 to 30 minutes. This method holds the solution in place and doesn't dry out fast. Remove the paper or cotton with gloves of course. Then rinse away. You will be surprised at how great it looks.

    • @pdogusmc
      @pdogusmc ปีที่แล้ว

      This is exactly right. Using paper towels or Q-tips will allow the product to work longer. Secondly, wet the shower then use the Clorox Toilet bowl cleaner and run it over all of the grout lines. Lightly rub it in. Let it sit for at least 1.5 hours. Then go in turn on warm water and scrub with a very rough scrubbing brush.
      Lastly, the reason why it's coming back so quickly is because the seal is gone. Let it dry for one day. Reseal and let it dry for one day. Hopefully you have a second shower or tub

    U know, the first thing I noticed was the condition of the shower and that u had no shoes on, but then I saw the bigger picture here. U took the time out ur day to show us this product/hack on ur real life shower and the difference it makes and that’s what’s most important here. I appreciate u demonstrating how u use the lime-a-way for ur shower. So much lessons in one video. Cleaning up my judgments and my shower 😂😂😂😂 thank u..

    • @LitMom
      @LitMom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I totally get why people thinks it’s gross that I wasn’t wearing shoes. Honestly it is gross. But in my mind this was my shower that we use daily. We clean it with Clorox and other bathroom cleaners. It SHOULD have been clean. So I didn’t think anything of it. But after seeing the difference the lime away made and how much cleaner it got the grout 🤢. It’s so gross. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Yes this was a very vulnerable video to make. I appreciate your kind words. I’m glad you see that I was trying to help someone else that may have the same problem with moldy grout.

    You mentioned using baking soda and vinegar. I just read an article that stated adding vinegar to baking soda changes the pH of the baking soda, which reduces its effectiveness against mold, mostly negating the process. It was suggested to use a paste of baking soda and water (or 3% hydrogen peroxide) instead of vinegar. The baking soda creates a pH that the mold cannot grow in. The article also recommended, as a preventative, to pour a baking soda mixture (with water or peroxide) over your shower walls/tiles/floor periodically to inhibit mold growth. As a plus, the baking soda won't burn your skin, and it's not toxic.

      Thank you for adding this! I used to think mixing vinegar and baking soda was effective too until I realized that their pH basically nullifies each other because they’re on opposite ends. So mixing them basically makes water 😬

    • @yxnone9771
      @yxnone9771 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct baking soda reacts with the acid in vinegar producing CO 2 , water and sodium acetate hence removing the acetic acid or vinegar with low pH which breaks down mould.

    Just a helpful tip the reason that the toilet bowl cleaner works especially lysol is because the the compound actually breaks down the grout. so you're actually pulling the top layer of the grout out and the more you do that the more grout you are pulling out of the shower and eventually it will actually eat the grout away

    I haven’t used lime away but I used Clorox Clinging Bleach Gel toilet bowl cleaner and it practically melted the soap scum, rust stains, and grime away. Wet the shower first and then wear rubber gloves to spread the gel over every surface and let it sit for 20-30 minutes before scrubbing with a soft bristle brush or wash cloth. Soft bristles are important because if your brush is too firm it won’t reach the grout unless you methodically scrub every grout line with the edges of the brush - too much work!! If the shower is really dirty you might use a whole bottle of cleaner but it will save you so much time and energy!! Once your shower is nice and clean, use a squeegee to dry the shower walls after each shower. It only takes a few seconds and keeps your shower clean much longer 😁

      I really hope this works for you. Could it be that it stays too damp in the basement? Maybe if the shower was dried with a towel after use that could cut down on the mold growth?? That does sound like a lot of work though. Method has a shower spray that you can spray all over the shower after use and it’s suppose to help keep the shower clean longer. So you don’t have to deep clean as often. I haven’t used it so I’m not sure if it keeps mold away but I might try that too.

      @@MrSoulMonk fingers crossed for you. I am having the same issue and based on all the videos I’ve been watching it says if the mold keeps returning through the grout after treatment it’s because it’s behind the tiles 😔
      I’m trying to figure out hot to test it without ruining my tiles

    Nice video. You may want to try CLR. Can get at Walmart and elsewhere. It’s stronger than lime away. I use a pumice stone and CLR to clear hard water stains at my house. Works best I’ve found.

    I have almost the identical shower with that submarine step up to enter. My mold is even more brutal too. She's right, this stuff is the best along with elbow grease and that brush. I would also say a bqq wire grill brush works really well too. The job is a pure nightmare. Good video.

    The trick is to dry the shower each time it is used. I use old towels I usually throw out or give to my friends to dry their dogs after being out in the river. I now only have to touch up the shower once a week. Our house is over a hundred years old. No excuses!

  • @littlesquirrel5007

    I have a house same age.....same situation. I cleaned the shower best I could.....then every day for about 2 months I would just get our of the shower And spray the shower down with a product called wet and forget. I did not use the kind that is for inside I use the kind that is for outside and you're only supposed to put it on once and then not reuse it again but I did it a light misting everyday for about 2 months my tiles look brand-new now and I only spray it about once a month now and clean the shower about once a month, for a deep cleaning. I had struggled with this shower for literally years but after talking to a contractor I learned that mold has deep roots that can go into the boards that are Behind the Walls period and when you have an old house that grout is not perfect so the mold will always come back. So if you spray everyday you're treating it until all that mold behind the walls are gone. I also made sure that I had silicone any areas where I felt water was getting in so that the problem would go away once the mold was treated and gone. When I finally got rid of all the mold and I knew it was gone for sure I seal the grout and I have never had this issue since

    Hello lit mom, first of all please use protection and make sure there is good ventilation I always vacuum first , to save product use it like toothpaste in the grout cover it up don't forget to cover all metal parts or they can be damaged, let it work allone for 1 hour rinsed off. I use a wet vacuum cleaner afterwards to get all the remaining stuff out off the grout and then I dry it with a microfiber window cloth or cotton cloth don't use a paper towel they will left fibre back in the grout. You can also use hydrogen peroxide 11% once every 2weeks But! use! protection! Mold is not killed with bleach at all it just bleach it like hair, you need a anti microbial cleaner for a long lasting treatment and findout the reason for the moisture ventilation is a key part. don't use vinegar it takes out the calcium components from the groutfiller and on dry walls! so over short or long you will have to replace it , but to prevent that scenario use a cleaner with a pH 5 to 6 level / neutral cleaner in regular day to day cleaning an alkaline cleaner works like a magnet for dust particle just by the way:)

    Using rainex after you clean well and let it dry helps it take longer to get bad again. But floor will be slippery. I also squeegee my shower every time now. Then bought several multi packs of cheap white wash cloths to dry whole shower after squeegee. Takes just 2 min. of prevention. So much faster and less toxic breathing than the deep clean. This is great for the deep cleans though!

    Invest in stanley steemer coming to your home to do a color seal on the grout,after a professional clean. You will be surprised how better the grout looks, even after you have done it by hand yourself. What the seal does, is not only protect the grout, give a new fresh look to it , but the biggest reason is during regular maintenance cleanings, it makes it easy peasy to clean off mildew, dirt ,etc.. from those grout lines. It's supposed to last between 3 and 5 years.

    Or buy Mold Armor EZ Wash on Amazon. It’s designed for exterior of the home. I poured it into a spray bottle, mixed it with water and sprayed it in my shower. Let rest for 10 minutes and rinse away. ZERO scrubbing. Worked like a charm. Just make sure you ventilate the room somehow. You won’t be disappointed.

    While watching your vid I said to myself "Lit Mom is really showing her math here, she's not afraid to show how hard a job cleaning such shower stalls is"... Then U went on to say "Embarrassing to show yourself doing this"; Don't be embarassed, I commend your honesty, keeping a home clean isn't easy, Kudos to you, I got some good tips, I'm going to take on mine now; Also, those corner shelves, did you add them onto your shower or are they built in? Would like to add some to mine to get my products off the floor. thanks again Lit Mom.

    • @LitMom
      @LitMom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s so much for your feedback. You’d be surprised how many people apparently have spotless homes 🙄. LOL. The corner shelves were built in with the shower. They are flawed btw. The water sits on the shelf instead of draining off. So yet another place to grow mold. 🤣 It is nice having a place to put your shower products though. Have you looked at the ones that hang on your shower head? They also have corner shelves that can suction to the wall or be placed in with a tention rod. I hope you find a solution.
