Ok so I think I have figured out why some work and some do not. I bought a crystal shifter on eBay. Installed it on my 2020 XC40 and it didn’t work. I noticed that there was a sticker on the one I bought that it was from 2023. So I searched around on the pictures of people selling these and found one from 2020. I bought that one and BOOYA! It works perfectly 😊 So my thought is one of two things. Either Volvo started putting the chip sensor into later ones so you couldn’t replace it. It that it just recognizes numbers from the year it was built or around when yours was built. Now I have to sell that one from 2023.
I tried to install this Inscription shifter assembly in my 2019 XC40 R Design. It is not plug and play in the US in my experience. My R Design did not recognize the shifter from the Inscription. I even took it to my local Volvo dealer and they could (or would) not help. I contacted several Volvo service departments with the same answer, Volvo does not want this crystal shifter on any other version of the XC40 other than the Inscription, and the software with prevent it. The only way to make this work is to attach the crystal knob only to the existing stock shifter shaft. It took some work to get the OEM look, but it can be done. You have to glue the crystal knob to a bracket that can attached to the shifter shaft. You have to hack saw the shaft to a shorter length and then attach the knob and bracket to the shaft.
I have read that the RDesign needs a software update to allow this shifter to work as it was only meant for the inscription model. Did you reflash the VIDA software?

Good afternoon. I have an XC40 Rdesign B4 197 unleaded fuel front wheel drive model 2020. Do you think it's ok ? Because when I ask my volvo center they said it's not possible. they can't do anything not even reprogram...
Is this the original shifter like the one In inscription models? Because on your website it says made in china and orrefors is a Swedish company so was confused, i got a xc40 coming up

it is original volvo part, it looks base is made in china, volvo has factory in china thats why they made some parts there

this is impossible the car will reject this retrofit , unless you did something to the pcb
