Leslie Uggams was in great voice! These excerpts from Encores productions show that, even within a show that "didn't work" there sure were some things that DID work - beautifully.
One of my favorite R&H scores. This is that musical that should have been a smash hit, but wasn't. It has a great score and strong source material. I think the problem originally was with the book. Rodgers and Hammerstein were too timid about honestly portraying Steinbeck's Cannery Row world of drifters and prostitutes.
There's a story about a veteran Broadway producer named Billy Rose going to see Pipe Dream and commenting afterwards: " You know what the problem is with this show? Oscar Hammerstein has never been inside a whorehouse in his life. "
Yeah! That's what that score is supposed to sound like. I don't get that from the original cast recording because the sound of the singers is so wrong and un-lifelike.

I also prefer this version over the original 1955 Broadway cast .I think that in this version the singers were better.
