Newman actually pushed NASCAR to put a bar in the roof area after he had a few bad wrecks at this style of track in the mid 2000s. They called it the Newman Bar. That bar saved his life in February. I think another thing that many people dont really register is not only was Newman hit while upside down, he was hit right on the driver side window area. Without that bar, his head more than likely would have been crushed.
Oh wow what an amazing story! Just shows that if you push for safety it can ultimately save your own life! Such a bad crash with such a great outcome in the end!
At the end of this race, we thought that we had lost Ryan Newman on the final turn of the final lap. Thank heavens that during the pandemic he was able to recover and return to racing when it resumed in May of this year. Definitely shows you how far we've gotten since Dale Earnhardt's tragic passing in 2001. God rest the Intimidator's soul.
I remember watching it on TV and then staying up for like two days because I was worried that we had lost a driver. Especially because Newman is a fellow Hoosier from Indiana.
Hamlin's spotter, Lambert, took responsibility for Hamlin celebrating. After the win, Lambert took his headset off to ask Newman's spotter if he was okay. Joe Gibbs, the car owner for the 11, reigned in Hamlin's crew and led them in prayer.
Donald trump was actually the first president to attend 2 daytona 500's unfortunately both 500's were marred by a last lap crash 2020 with Newman and Dale Earnhardt in 2001
There have been two times in my life that I have been absolutely convinced I just witnessed a fatality and then it turned out they survived. Those two were Bodine and Newman
It is not common for the President to give the command to start engines. The only other President to do so was Ronald Reagan in 1984 and he did it as Air Force 1 was landing.
I Honestly Don’t blame Denny for Celebrating because he wasn’t told the situation until he was out of the car and he was obviously shook Edit: I was actually there in person and that wreck was scary
I remember watching on my couch, and my Nana was over, and she is very nervous about racing and said “who’s going to die today?”. Needless to say that was a ridiculous evening for me. I was real scared.
The reason Kyle said that was because the Toyota drivers had a strategy: stay at the back, save fuel, and let the guys up front wreck themselves. Then, towards the end, make their way up front to try and win. Denny went up to the front earlier than the other Toyota’s, so that’s what Kyle was mad about.
2:18- President Trump was the grand marshal for this past season's Daytona 500. It's not often you see the President of the US be the grand marshal for a Cup event, let alone attend one. There have been several times like these, however, as the 2004 Daytona 500 had then-President George W. Bush as grand marshal, and the 1984 Summer race @ the Florida track had then-President Ronald Reagan as grand marshal as well. The grand marshal for the 500 is usually a celebrity of the sport and/or international culture, like Britney Spears, who was the grand marshal for the 2001 Summer race @ Daytona. Not sure who'll give the command to fire the engines this February but I wouldn't be surprised if it's someone famous. 3:45- NASCAR doesn't race in rain on high-speed ovals, however they do on road courses. The sanctioning body can also allow cars to race on short ovals (also known as short-tracks) like Martinsville because of the low-risk nature of those venues, but they haven't done that yet. The 2020 Cup & Xfinity Series events at the road course/oval hybrid configuration @ Charlotte saw rain tires being used. With 2021 having 8 total road course rounds on the Cup schedule, 7 of which awarding points, it's suspected that at least one of them will have rain play a big part. 18:09- NASCAR did make changes to the rules on superspeedway chassis for safety reasons due to Newman's accident, as the construction & bracing to the roof & rear-ends were tweaked to be stronger & more durable, I believe. I could be wrong on that slightly but that's what I think. Unfortunately those rule changes only affected parts of the cars you can't see, as they were internal. That's a reason why I'm unsure of the exact specifications of said mandates. Besides, the vehicles looked relatively similar to their appearances in the 500, when the series headed back to Daytona in August for the regular season finale. One more thing to note, NASCAR is holding events @ Daytona before the 500. The Busch Clash & 150-mile qualifying races before 500 take place in the leading days up to race, before the Truck & Xfinity Series events on Friday & Saturday the 12th & 13th of February, so be subscribed to NASCAR's TH-cam channel for highlights & more when the time comes: th-cam.com/channels/uN9hYw2RpoAW8rZ3VK3isA.html
@@TheBeesleys99 He's correct, in the last month there was a design mandate for one more short connection tube and a plate gusset to go behind the driver's side (left) door opening to help the main roll hoop (over the driver's head) from bending inwards in a direct hit, like Newman's.
Hamlin isn't a bad guy. Nascar fans are some of the most ridiculously fickle fans in the world. They all want personalities in the sport, but hate when they get one. 99% of people that hate Newman and Kyle Busch loved Dale Earnhardt who was one of the absolute meanest competitors in amy sport.
3:50 For the past several seasons now, they'd race in the rain but only on Road Courses using Goodyear rain tires with an option to switch to Goodyear racing tires (the tires they normally race on, no tread). Just last season in the Xfinity they allowed them to race, even when it was pouring down, during the Daytona Road Course, and it was one of the best races to see for NASCAR's 2nd tier series. But years ago, during what I think the 2001 all star race, the race started and it started to rain. By time they got to turn one of the first lap, the track was already wet, and caused pretty much a good portion of the field (of 21 cars btw), to crash at the first turn, because the track was wet and it was raining. So in order to have a race, and since a lap wasn't even completed yet, NASCAR allowed the drivers to bring out their back up cars to use and race. Plus the All Star races only rewards money not points, so it was doable and fair.
The thing about Kyle Busch is that people hate him because he's so good. Haha. Yeah he doesn't have the best attitude but where's the fun in a sport when you have every contender be nice.. You need the villain and he's the perfect fit! People just love to hate and i guarantee you that all those that say they hate Kyle Busch, love Dale Earnhardt when he just just as bad or worse with his on track battles.
I was at this race, and yes, the rain delay was so annoying, especially because that was only the fourth time in 62 years that the 500 was delayed by rain. It was a spectacular race, though, and the end was surreal. We were all just waiting, holding our breaths. We didn’t find out till hours later that he was even still alive. It was insane.

Take a look at the video from the inside of the crash at 7:10. Not a lot of people know this or will pick up on it but as soon as the driver sees the crash is beyond his control he crosses his hands on his chest. This keeps his extremities from flailing during the crash and stops him from hurting himself more by holding onto the wheel as is spins out of control.
Newman is an engineer the Newman bar that goes above drivers door on the roof that he designed is what saved him from a tragic fate many chassis builders across the us in all kinds if racing series are implementing this
The irony of the Earnhardt situation is that he was the main driver petitioning NASCAR to *not* mandate the HANS device. He didn't like how they fit and how they limited his head movement (which would force him to change his driving style). Plus, he liked open-faced helmets and those are not compatible with head and neck safety devices. So... basically, he hated the thing that would've saved his life and actively lobbied for NASCAR to keep the rules as they were. It's such a shame.
To this day Ryan Newman still has no memory from that crash, thats how bad it was. The worst wreck I've seen in person was when I was in the pits at Daytona in 2015 and seeing Austin Dillion fly up into the fence...scary moment
You probably have heard about the Newman Bar (or Newman Halo whichever it's called) and it's story, but here's something about Newman: He might be the smartest driver in NASCAR. It's not known for NASCAR drivers to have college/university degrees as most skip college and go right into NASCAR (or other racing circuits) right out of High School. Denny is... interesting. I personally don't mind him, but I don't specifically like him either. He's a really good driver, but fans mostly hate him because he drives for one of the most hated teams. He's clean 99% of the time, but he's also not afraid to get aggressive and put the bumper to someone when he needs a position. I've never seen him intentionally dump someone in his Cup career unlike others on the most hated list. There's only one incident that Hendrick/Elliott fans will come at me for, but that's debatable. Outside of the car he seems like a really chill guy and I think if he was on any other team he'd have a lot more fans
1:26 the Daytona 500 is a big deal because it’s the first race of the year so whoever wins the 500 has the championship lead at the start of the season. Also the first race ever was held on the beach.
That's not the reason why, the playoffs have only existed since 2014. It's because they were making it a big deal when they first started racing there in 1959, and over time it just became such a prestigious race.
Something funny too note is that Truex (#19) is probably in the best position to win the Daytona triple (not three Daytona 500’s in a row, the Busch Clash, The Bud Shootout, and the Daytona 500) but no one will pick him for it
3:44: Oh, man, oh, man. All you have to do to answer that question is watch hilights from the 2022 Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona. That'll tell you aaaaaaaaaaall you need to know!
It's somewhat common for Republican presidents/candidates to show up at Daytona in an election year. This is because NASCAR's usual demos, as well as mid-Florida's, typically swing Republican, so it's a good stump. As for the rain, stock cars really aren't built for rain, at least at their common oval tracks. In recent years, they've begun using rain tires on road courses, though. But rain + ovals typically don't yield good results. No traction on common tires.
They have to cancel it because of rain because of the banking because I only have slick tires for like a wolf tracks it’s a banking would be very slippery and the cars would have to race on the apron which wouldn’t be very fun
NASCAR does not run ovals in rain. They do run road courses though. The big thing is that with rain tires and the speed of ovals it would just not be safe.
love your videos. just betweenst you, myself and the unknown number of people reading this comment.... i am related to the pilot that delivered President Trump to Daytona that day, thus making it my faaaaavorite daytona 500 ever.
At the end like this, especially on Superspeedways (Daytona, Talledega) they link up by manufacturer.. Fords/Chevy's Etc.. which is why you see Blaney pushing Newman on that last lap.. they ALWAYS do it.. there is no way in hell a Ford guy is going to push a Chevy or a Toyota to the win LOL
If it's a bit of rain, they have jet drters. If it's too far gone, they'll call it a day and try again tomorrow. They only have slick tires, no tread. Racing, especially that fast would be ugly
They usually race until the racing service is disturbed, if oil gets on the track they will stop the race to clean it for safety. But in terms of rain the don't race in it because they don't have windshield wipers and they are going 170+ so that would be extremely dangerous to race in the rain. I don't like Hamlin and hated him when I saw him doing donuts while newman is in sight upside down but he redeemed himself a little bit when he asked about Ryan.
NASCAR lost the track so they moved it to the next day. It was to dangerous to go 200 mph on 31 degrees of banking when it is raining. The track is part of a narrow part of Florida so they get small pop ups of rain because there isn’t any hills or mountains to break it up so that they get the race in as scheduled. Only road courses they will do rain tires.
It's not so much the bumping, but there's nowhere near the downforce that other series have. There's not much but the weight of the car to keep even heavily treaded rain tires from hydroplaning, and it's not enough at oval track speeds. F1 will happily run in downpours because at speed they literally have tons of downforce to press the tires through to contact. NASCAR does run road courses in the rain though, because speeds are much lower.
I do think Hamlin gets the worst wrap from the fan base. He spun the most popular driver out a few years ago and a lot of fans still hold that against him. Kyle Busch is arrogant driver but he is probably the most talented. Every sport needs someone to love and hate. NASCAR is no different. I am a fan of both Kyle and Denny so it's not like they don't have fans.
We don't hate Kyle Bush for his skills as a driver. We hate him as a person, his arrogance and such are just off the charts. Everything is always someone else's fault, never his. However his skills as a driver are almost unmatched by any driver in NASCAR history (almost, but a few do pass him on that scale).
You're pausing way too much. If you watch the video you can learn somethings but try to ask the questions at the end of the video and we can help you with the the answers. I am new to your channel like it so far just giving a lil bit of my opinion
Also denny Hamlin 11 is as a big of a chump as Kyle arrogant, dirty driver and neither him or his team weren’t even remotely concerned about Newman until the cameras where on them
Idk if someone already answered this but the cars are way to heavy and going at such a high speed putting way to much pressure on the tires to make rain tires to race on ovals. Sometimes on road courses they do run in the rain but ovals where theres a lot of bumping and going into corners between 130-210mph which makes it way to dangerous to race in the rain
fans will be at race but i think only 25% will be allowed in. i need to find the pic of Newman walking out of the hospital with his 2 daughters, under his own power btw, i was hoping this wasn’t a repeat of the 2001 Daytona 500
Very simple hey 3400 pound car with tires that are slick in rain not a good idea we use what is called the air Titan system it literally is a helicopter engine attached to the back of a truck and multiple of them are attached together too quickly dry the track you will see road pickup truck with hoses hanging out of the back that's how we drive things off after a rain storm it can take as short as an hour or as long as four hours depending on the size of the track and if you have weepers
Cars are too heavy to run rain tires on oval tracks they would just burn them up. So any rain at all needs an automatic yellow flag because they're running slicks and they'll crash instantly.
Nascar will do road courses in the rain but not the ovals, especially the high banked ovals.

Ok yeah that makes sense! Cheers for that mate!
4:47 the Toyota strategy was to hang back and save fuel.
Ahh ok that makes sense!
The president has come to races before but not every year.
Hamlin isn't a bad guy. Just misunderstood.
In nascar there is a road corse and a oval and ovals they don’t race in rain
NASCAR lost the track so they moved it to the next day. It was to dangerous to go 200 mph on 31 degrees of banking when it is raining. The track is part of a narrow part of Florida so they get small pop ups of rain because there isn’t any hills or mountains to break it up so that they get the race in as scheduled. Only road courses they will do rain tires.
The president thing was a one time thing
They race in the rain on road courses
The people saying “big wreck” are the spotters, not the drivers.
This years Daytona 500 will have limited fans if you were wondering if they were going to have fans
Thanks for that mate!
@@TheBeesleys99 no problem!
Awesome thanks for that mate! Appreciate it!
Exactly everyone has there own opinions and sometimes success and talent brings hate!
2020 Daytona 500
8:53 was 77 wrecking into them on purpose cuz it looks like he turned right on purpose
You're pausing way too much. If you watch the video you can learn somethings but try to ask the questions at the end of the video and we can help you with the the answers. I am new to your channel like it so far just giving a lil bit of my opinion
This video was paused at least 46 times
Some people like the pausing some dont l. Appreciate your opinion and 100% indeed to get better at finding an inbetween!
25% is better than none I guess
! Amazing that it wasnt a repeat!
@@TheBeesleys99 winning back to back at Daytona is hard to do
100% I imagine its incredibly hard!
A cool video to react to would be nascar tempers
Awesome will check it out!
Fun fact: Donald Trump was the first president to say the words
Doesn't take much rain to delay or cancel nascar race. They do run road courses rain or shine
Please react to onboard stuff it’s awesome
Will do mate!
Cars are too heavy to run rain tires on oval tracks they would just burn them up. So any rain at all needs an automatic yellow flag because they're running slicks and they'll crash instantly.
Any speedway races none of the sports leagues will run. On the road courses the indy cars can. But nascar won't on any track, other than sprinkles.
Ryan would have won the 500 change my mind
Bro this guy pauses like every second
Yea cant race in the rain on rivals with the tires they run
I was there
Drivers too root for 12 blaney and 14 briscoe
no now adays it does matter how many stages you win
12 car was tapped by the 11 car
React to sprint car flips and wrecks or in car videos
No He who should not be named doesn't open nascar
it was the only sporting event trump was invited to
Joe Biden would never go to one of these 😂
Do you HAVE to pause it so much?.....
It's really boring when you keep pausing the video
Ok, yea Denny was not a good person about the crash. He did burnouts and all that stuff. You can hear the crowd booing as he does the burnouts.
Such a shame really. More important things than winning at times like that.
