  • Welcome to my fourth episode of the Aurora Restoration Project. In this video I will show you a short bit of the history of this fine ship and will also show some of the current projects we are working on including the railing and teak cap rails. I will go further and show you a project I was able to complete not long ago in the lower entry of the Aurora. Thanks for watching.
Join us on our journey to restore one of the last pocket cruise liners and one of the most historic and notable vessels still floating today.

This channel is great, if I had the time and money, I'd do the same!
Just some thoughts on the ceiling panels. Gluing them down may not be the best solution. I'm a marine electrician on yachts and will offer that you should try and keep in the back of your mind, "what if I have to work in this area". 3M Dual lock is a great way of securing ceiling panels that remain held on, there are also little sockets and balls that pop in and hold really well at sea.
The ship is beautiful and really worth saving or at least kicking off the restoration. I'd LOVE to see this big generators going again! That's the first step in making a ship feel alive again.

Im a marine electronics tech and I screamed when he said "glued". I doubt they've got relevant or up to date drawings, so that's going to be a pain when it comes time to chase wires.

Sir. The wood chisel should be used with the angle or foot towards the wood. You are using the chisel upside down. If you use it like we were taught in woodwork school, then you can control the depth of the cut. This applies to sharp chisels. If it is blunt, like the one you are using, then it does not matter too much. Enjoy your project!!

  • @toobad9946
    @toobad9946 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Love the project. Just subscribed and binged all episodes.
I'm 63 and have decades of experience as a successful contractor.
A few suggestions, if you don't mind:
Hole saws: Tighten them snug by hand. No tools required. The drill rotation will keep them on. Lenox brand have a hex shoulder at the arbor end. Use channel locks to hold the arbor end of the saw cup and reverse the drill. The cup pops off easily and you can use a medium size blade screw driver to drive out the plugs of wood or metal. It's fast and easy. Use the hole saw to just get a firm outer rim of your plug hole. Get some Forstner bits to finish your plug hole. It's a much cleaner hole and easy to clean out. Precut several plugs. A drill press cuts the best plugs. You already know what size holes you are making. Have the plugs ready. They can be made when weather or other interruptions prevent major progress.
Drop in ceiling tile: Consider making your own. Cut pieces of drywall and cover with vinyl wallpaper. Decorate and close the ceiling at the same time. Use a color matched caulk to seal them into place. For maintenance just score the caulking with a razor knife and lift out the tile. The vinyl covering makes cleaning easy. For a ship you might want moisture resistant drywall. The wallpaper/caulking trick is used by drug manufacturers, research labs and correctional institutions, among others. It's secure can be washed down.
Hidden nails in wood: Small earth magnets will stick to non-visible ferrous material.

You need to build a saw bench. That way, one person can operate a stable planer, or a table saw. 16' long with a recessed spot in the middle to set your planer, chop saw, and table saw. I restore custom luxury homes in Bloomfield MI. Nothing beats a table that one man can operate safely. If it's going to rain, cover it with 6mil visqueen with some simple wood clips to keep it dry. Also use a wax pencil to mark nails you find with a magnet. Helps bigtime. Love this!!!

cool huge project. You should invest in some cushioned kneepads considering how much you end up on your knees. Also a big trash can so you aren't having to hold the bag open all the time.

I would love to see this ship sail again across the Atlantic and the pacific. It will take many years to get this ship running but well worth it.

I love to hear about the history. It’s a wonderful thing that you are doing. This is one of the reasons I had become a Merchant Mariner. Keep going I love your dedication!

Use a forstner bit to remove the damaged wood. It will be so much easier.

Great work, I would recommend a set of sawhorses and a few slide clamps to help hold the rails while working on them will help in many ways. I'm a wood worker in Pennsylvania should you have any questions please let me know, i wish you were in the states i could have help in many ways for you. good luck and thanks for the videos.

Liked, subbed, and shared! I am truly amazed at this restoration project not just because its huge, but for the love of this beautiful vessel you have dedicated yourself to. Big cheers and best wishes from the great PNW BC Canada! Man I wish I was younger, you'd have a free chef at the very least :)
