  • Canon has been slow to bring 4K to their DSLRs, so we were eager to see what Canon has to offer in this space with the 1D X Mark II. This camera is now their flagship DSLR and has some very intriguing specs. We already mentioned 4K, but there’s a lot more to this camera than that. With up to 60 fps in DCI 4K, the ability to shoot up to 16 continuous photos, it’s an action shooters dream.
    We really enjoyed using the 1D X MKII. It’s larger size is nice for getting more stable handheld shots, but some might be turned off by its size and weight. The autofocus is great, but we still wouldn't recommend AF over manual focus in most video situations. It shoots beautiful DCI 4K video, and if you love Canon, you’ve been waiting a bit too long for 4K in a DSLR.
    It comes with a big price tag, but the picture quality is fantastic. Something to consider is that for about a grand more, you can have a RED RAVEN brain, though you’ll need $3-6,000 worth of accessories for a complete RED camera system. It’s double the cost of a Sony a7S II, but some complain that those mirrorless bodies are too light and small. To boot, they have a short battery life and can have overheating issues. Although it's not a perfect fit for everyone and is high dollar, we definitely recommend the Canon 1D X Mark II.

    I’ll never forget when I was in college in St. Louis Missouri and I went to City Photo for some supplies. There was a woman there who work for the Saint Louis Post dispatch ,she was carrying two Nikon F1. One on each shoulder and this was probably around 1972 or 73. I will tell you this whether I’m carrying a camera or a rifle bag with a rifle and five magazines fully loaded,going to the rifle range everything has changed in the way it feels as I have gotten older.

    Came across this video because I'm in search for a camera that will be used for events and documentaries. This camera is similar to the 1DC, which I was considering, now I'm leaning towards this one due to it's 4K 60fps ability. I recently sold my RED Raven (Great camera but not so easily run and gun) and I'm hoping to pick up 2 of these with those funds. Thanks for the review!

    What would you do/say today? I'm going to decide between 1dx ii or a7 iii for run and gun filmmaking, and also photos, so hybrid; any advices?

    • @videomaker
      @videomaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is $4k difference between the two. If you are considering them and each does what you need to do, its down to how much money you want to spend. The 1DX mk II is an amazing camera and is superior to the a7 iii, but its much more money.

    • @giordanopioli1922
      @giordanopioli1922 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have plenty of Canon lenses, Sony lenses are expensive and I could find a used 1dx, so costs are not so different; my main concerns are on performance, handling, ergonomy, workflow, memory storage, usability, results, joy of use of the camera is a big one, possibly don't want to draw the attention of everyone while shooting, robustness; it's not easy because each one has its advantages and drawbacks

    • @videomaker
      @videomaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the video in the 1dx ii is wonderful, however its 800 Mbps, much much more data than the 100 Mbps on the a7 iii. The 1dx is much larger and heavier.

    • @giordanopioli1922
      @giordanopioli1922 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah! 4k 60p is 800Mbps; definitely a lot of data to deal with!

    how many stops of dynamic range does it have?

    • @videomaker
      @videomaker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, however we don't have the proper tools to test Dynamic Range, and Canon has not released that information. Thanks for watching.

      Probably at least 4 stops less than the C300 2. That said it's just a DSLR so we have to accept the limitations of the camera for what it is relative to the capabilities of a professional video camera.

    • @andric72
      @andric72 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This camera blows away a FS7 a C300mkii and RED RAVEN in 4k. for sure..Crop factor is 1.3x not 1.4x according with all review on the web. Peaking and Zebra they would be useless and ridiculous on the 3.2 lcd back, I use rather a SmallHD 702 with all tools. miles better. And if you did not know this camera makes a 60p in 4k slow motion ever seen.
      The 'inefficient' codec hahah ...folks would prefer a garbage H264 base codec? oh my god. this codec MJPEG is great! Old? what's the matter?
      The 800mbps actually is the same ProRes 422 HD in 4k. so what's problem?
      This camera is like a RED but without RAW with the most advanced AF ever seen and Canon color science.
      I would like to know how you stops less counts? probably you've never tried or turned on. that's all.

    I think it is misleading to argue that you need a $6000 photo camera that does video these days. Don''t get me wrong, it is probably the best of its kind, and anyone who can afford it should buy it. But there are a lot of prosumers out there that are going to see this and think "so this is what I need to do great video and take great photos". Is it?
    Besides, Large files+expensive cards vs low battery life + cheap batteries - $2500.
    The Sony A99ii is a better comparison to this camera than the small a7rii.
    On another train of thoughts, you could get 4 Sony a6500 for this price. Or you can get an A7sII and a a6300 and a Mavic Pro and fit it all inside the 1DXii's bag. It is a crazy world

    • @videomaker
      @videomaker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      at the time of this review the a99 II and the a6500 had not been anounced. You make good points. Thank you for your comments! Best!

      I disagree with you +Cocina Topia for several reasons. Here it is:
      1. durability. there is no doubt canon 1dx2 is tank but not just by built / output in general is amazing
      2. lenses + IS + AF + touchscreen focus
      3. overheating (you can get around with any other model, like a7r2 but, sony needs more time and better conditions to perform - this is critical, for long filming a7r2 is not there yet
      4. battery life (please do not start with it is not problem to change batteries) it is a deal breaker - huge (batteries are $50-$70 piece and they are lasting 30-40min on a7r2
      5. LUT for canon is absolute and color science is unique, c-logs cannot deliver this - you have to understand that no matter what these will never match it is different brands, period
      all in all, i really love a7r2 it is amazing camera but it i snot for everything. 1dx2 is absolute winner, it is made with cine on mind and it is video oriented dslr to shoot amazing images.
      I am not canon user, i am looking to add to my collection, but i can tell you always comparing nikon because i am using it daily and dynamic range on nikon is absolute, you can say same if you are looking for video on canon - color science is amazing
      a7r2 is brilliant compact camera but there is so many problems attached and it is unpredictable that i am not confident to spend large sum of money on anything attached to it.
      i agree with +Videomaker when they are saying that actually a7r2 is more expensive, it is sure. put a side i have to buy new lenses (i can adapt many other is great opportunity and very inviting feature) but considering that say in range of $12k I can assemble quite nice setup with 1dx2 VS with a7r2 it is not the same and results will be much much different. when you body fail you been left with all these lenses in tears, when say you want to switch on dofferent body with 1dx2 you can upgrade and go really far with it and for instance work with it.
      another thing is that 1dx2 is investment that you can sell after few years VS sony i am not sure. price will go down and ratings are not so bright. it is bad value for the money anyway.
      if sony offering a7r2 say for $1999.00 than we will have real deal here keeping this up close to $3k is crazy.
      sony-zeiss f4 lenses are way to expensive compared to canon f4 and those from canon have better IS and say canon f4 L 16-35 $930 for canon VS $1250 for sony-zeiss i mean com on.. it is nearly double and should i mention that zeiss lens is not that good nor better in any way to cost that much. It is not f2.8 lens, ok
      when you put all things into your spreadsheet you can compare. trick is that body is cheaper, and basically you can go with manual lenses, used, pretty dog cheap with a7r2 and get awesome results, i tested myself. it is perfect for that but forget autofocus, it is just crap okay, yeah it works, but not so well

    Great review but with a 1.4 crop factor (which most definitely is an issue), and not to mention no CLog, limited DR, no peaking, zebras, no 4K slow mo and no 4:4:4 capabilities, many serious video shooters will avoid the 1DX MK2 and stick to a serious video camera such as the C300 2.

    one thing u didnt mention is size... its def not suited to travel videographers due to its huge brick like size and weight (especially with multiple lenses). ive been contracted multiple times as a travel photographer and the main camera of choice was the awesome Canon 6D. however now i also do videography the sony a7 series and a6300/500 makes most sense (its a lot lighter to carry 5 sony batteries than it is to take a Canon 1D series body ;) Size and weight is by far the biggest downside of this camera. please canon... put this technology into a mirrorless finally! ive used canon faithfully for years... but they have forced me (and many others) to leave the brand due to their poor product decisions :(
