    I had a '69 Barracuda Formula S, 340, Torqueflite, ran it at the drags a few times in '72, set up for Pure Stock class (exhaust dumps, 4.56 rear, a little tuning, didn't need much else). It won class, but in time trials it also beat two Trans Am 455s, and my wife beat a '70 AAR "Cuda 340 6-pack. AAR driver couldn't believe it, so he came back around, and she beat him again! That's the one car I owned that I've always regretted selling.

      @ztwntyn8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rhine the quadrajet saves on fuel (until the giant secondaries open lol) you don’t feel all that much great response when driving normally but if you just step into it enough for the secondaries to crack open you feel it strong along with a second gear chirp or you slow for a red light but it turns green and you are still doing about ten mph and still in second gear you can get some rubber without getting into the secondaries. My 400 Pontiac would do that too but the torque difference between my 400 and 455 is big. It’s about the difference in my 4th gen Trans Am auto LT1 and my RA III 400 which is big difference. I have a vid of my formula 400 vs a 79 TA ls1 swap... guess who wins lol not the LS 😜

    • @johnkendall6962

      The GTO is the much better daily driver. The 440 in the cuda that year was not a happy marriage. The 340 was the much better choice. Then you could get power steering power brakes and a 4 speed. Put on headers, recurve the distributor and the 340 was just as fast too.

  • @SweatyFatGuy
    @SweatyFatGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Man my 70 GTO is HEAVY... it is a non AC car, the only options it has are power brakes and steering. It was originally a 400 4 barrel 3 speed manual car. The front bumper alone, without the mounting brackets is 90lbs, that does not help traction. With a mild 455 running only 8.8:1 compression D port heads, a stock converter in a Th400 or 2004R and 2.93 gears it would smoke the 275 60 15 tires no problem at anything under 40mph. With a set of slicks it would spin them but run mid to high 12s at 105mph. Been trying to decide what to do with it when I restore it, its too heavy to race it, I'd rather put a 5 speed with OD in it than put it back to stock. Make it a fun driver/cruiser. If I build a car for the Pure Stock Drags it would be a 71/72 455 HO Formula clone, so it can run pump gas. They won't let me run E85 like I do with my high compression Pontiacs. I'd race my numbers matching 455 HO 72 Formula, but it has every option the original owner could check on the form... so its as heavy as the GTO.
    Its fun owning, building, and driving these old cars. I've had the 70 GTO since 1994, the 10th Anniversary TA since 1987, the 67 Cougar since 1982, 72 GTO since 1985, the 65 GTO I got in 2007, but it was a rusted rolling shell, now its my daily driver with an E85 swilling 455 that has 11.5:1 compression thanks to the 67 vintage 400 heads on it. The 72 455 HO Formula came along in 2005, and it needs a full restoration. Have had a 71 Formula 400 rolling shell since 1998, it would be the one I build into an HO clone, its manual everything and no AC. The 71 T37 would be cool with a 455 HO, but like the GTO its heavy. Not enough left of the 68 Firebird to restore it, so the shell is going to be a tube chassis street strip fun toy.
    Its strange finding myself being the old guy with all the cool cars I wanted back in the 80s and early 90s, but couldn't find or afford. I can afford to build them, if I buy them as rusted heaps, can't afford to buy them in nice shape. Its a good thing I love doing the work..

    Not a fan of automatics, but this match-up was extremely even. I think the Mopar had the advantage, with a lighter car, a bit more gear, and a better driver. meh..my 70 is faster than that one, with 2.93 gears and an 8.8:1 compression 455. With the 13:1 heads and E85, it would put a bus length or two on either of those cars. What the owners and drivers of them can do varies a lot. So why get butthurt over it? They ran pretty much the same times, and the GTO is 400lbs heavier, and is much nicer to drive. My 70 has a big swaybar up front and one in the back, so it doesn't wallow in a turn like a chevy. I like how the Chargers my brothers own, and the 70 Cuda I own drive too, the torsion bars do surprisingly well in corners. The 340 in the Cuda can't really compete with any of my Pontiacs though, but it has AC and is that eye searing bright green, dad left it to me last year.
      Not sure which one is heavier, the 70 GTO or the 72 Formula 455 HO with every option available. I suppose I should weigh the Formula and find out. Either way, those two are the heaviest cars I own... well maybe the 79 10th Anniversary TA, yeah its portly too. Nice leather seats though, and it really goes around corners well. Fun cars.

    • @benkrom2737
      @benkrom2737 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@707x-y6s Yeah, Pontiacs aren't the highest reving engines but they're not diesels either. I've been working on Pontiacs since the 455 came out 1970. The they revv higher than you think. Listen to that 455, it sounds more like it's going uphill, not accelerating. Probably already in top gear and just going down the track. 70 GTO was a pretty heavy car. Needs at least 3.90s If it was a RAM AIR IV I'd say 4.56. Listen to that engine, it's struggling/lugging. If it was a BBC I'd want 4.88-5.30s. Should drive a car with 5.30s , it's insane 😳

    • @benkrom2737
      @benkrom2737 ปีที่แล้ว

      P.S. Always better to bounce off the top of a powerband than to have to climb all the way through a power band. That takes time and anything that takes time will make you lose. 3rd gear in an automatic back in 70 was a overdrive gear so only having 3.55s the engine doesn't look forward to the next gear especially if it's 3rd in an automatic. That's why most racers use a 2 Spd power glide with a stout final gear 4.11-513s. One less gear to change. Gear change is time spent. 455 stock with emissions and all might have most power at 4,300 rpm but doesn't mean it will stop reving and yeah maybe was down to 300 hp at 4,800 but who cares, it had already done its work and just has to carry you over the line. Nothing worse than hitting Peak at 1500 ft than 1400ft. You've left shit on the table.
