  • 1970 Ford Torino Super Cobra Jet drag racing 1966 Pontiac GTO
    First car is a 1970 Ford Torino. The other a 1966 Pontiac GTO. The Torino is a Super Cobra Jet and therefore has a 429 V8. The GTO has a 389 V8. The Torino was rated 375 horsepower and the GTO was rated 360 horsepower. Both the Cobra Jet and GTO feature 4-speed manual transmissions. Rear gearing for the Torino Cobra Jet is a 4.30 with a factory Detroit Locker. The GTO has an even more aggressive 4.33. The Ford Torino is heavy with weight coming in at 4180 pounds including the driver. The Pontiac GTO weighs-in at 3695 pounds. The Torino Super Cobra Jet was a rare car with only 125 produced in 1970 with the 4-speed manual transmission. In 1966 Pontiac produced 19,045 GTOs with Sri-Power. Original testing from Motor Trend in February 1970 showed a 1/4 mile in 13.99 seconds @ 101 mph. The Ford Torino was actually the 1970 Motor Trend car of the year. Car and Driver tested a Tri-Power GTO with 3.55 rear gears and a 4-speed in March 1966 and it ran the 1/4 mile in 14 seconds @ 105 mph. The Super Cobra Jet was automatically created when you optioned the Cobra Jet for $164 and then also the Drag Pack for $207.

    Love the '65-'67 Goats, but appreciate the old Torinos, as well. Even though the Torino had more cubes and more torque, the GTO was quite a bit lighter. The Torino was the quicker car that day...a great race between two classics. Thanks for posting.

    An SCJ Torino Cobra is a force to be reckoned with. I've got a 460, and damn these motors can HAUL with CJ heads.

    • @chuckd7423
      @chuckd7423 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've got a 460 too, and it's kind of a hybrid build. It's a 70 429 SCJ block, with 4 bol mains and TRW aluminum pistons, but has regular 460 heads from that year, not CJ or SCJ. The heads have been ported and polished, and have been upgraded with CJ valves and aluminum roller rockers, so they're probably similar to CJ specs now. When I rebuilt the engine around 10 years ago after an oil pump failure, I installed a 460 crank and bored it .030 over, so it's now a 466. It runs good, but I've been thinking about upgrading to aftermarket aluminum heads. The engine uses a programmable MSD ignition system, has ceramic coated headers, edelbrock intake and 800 carb, mild cam upgrade, and too many other things to list. It's installed in a 72 Ford Ranchero GT with a built C6 and 3.50 traction lock, There aren't many Rancheros on the road anymore, at least not in NW Florida, where I live.. I've owned this one for around 30 years, and it's my toy that I enjoy taking out for a drive a couple of times a month, on nice days.

      @@chuckd7423 I have a factory stock 1970 Torino 429 SCJ 4 speed with the drag pack option. What's super rare about it is the only 1970 Torino plain Jane station wagon that Ford ever produced that way. '70-'71, Ford produced six 429 CJ A/T country squire trim Torino station wagons. Mine is a one only and it took several moths to get the car documented. I bought it in 1981 with 5 other cars in a wholesale package. It had a broken aluminum bellhousing, worn-out clutch, didn't run because the distributer points were fried, and it only had 34,300 miles on it. I found a cast iron bell-housing through Hemmings, installed new clutch, installed new points/condenser in the distributer and it ran find. I put 15x7 Magnum 500 wheels on it from a wrecked '71 Torino Ranchero GT. The paint was good but faded. The interior was mint. I replaced the stock Ford shifter with a Competition+ Hurst shifter. A few years later, the car was stripped to bare meal and repainted base coat/clear coat and I put an electronic conversion in the distribute. All new gaskets/seals, mew fuel pump, double chain with new timing gears in the engine. New gaskets/seals/bearings in the transmission and the rear differential. I replaced the differential traction-lock with a 3:70 gears Detroit Locker. I ran it on the drag strip, a few times, with 4:30 gears and street legal slicks rear tires and tall front drag racing tires. it did mid to high 11's with closed exhaust and aviation fuel.

    What a combination, the 429 SCJ with the Top Loader 4-speed along with a Detroit Locker with 4.30,s in the 9" The 70 Torino Cobra is probably my favorite Car from that era, what an excellent cruiser with killer looks and that 429 BBF Super Cobra Jet monster lurking beneath that hood. The 429-460 engines came out too late in the muscle car era, so much potential with that engine platform. The aftermarket finally coming out with good Cylinder Heads last few years, Especially the support from Jon Kaase with the BBF stuff, mainly his Cylinder Heads. All you need is a good Stroker Kit, Solid Roller, some Kaase SR-71 Heads out of the box, and you easily over 1000 HP through a single Carburetor. With a rock solid bottom end. The 429-460 Fords really underrated engines, with so much potential. My favorite Ford Engines, along with the Clevelands.

    • @TrustyZ900
      @TrustyZ900 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You definitely know your Fords. I've had both motors and they're two of my favorites. One was in a '70 Mach 1 - 351 C/ 4 speed. the other was in a 1979 F150 that ran 300,000 miles. I owned it for 26 years and at that mileage still did not use oil. The 385 series motors had strong bottom ends. We had the chance to compare a427 BB Chevy and the 460 made the Chevys lower end look puny. The only reason I sold the F150 was that it was almost impossible to buy American made parts for it.New Fords are in name only.

    27 yrs ago my friend bought a red 70 Torino 429 SCJ with C6 and 3.91 rear as a roll over insurance total for 5k. It ran but that was it. Everyone thought he was nuts. He used 3 Torinos to put the car back together with a total investment of around $26k. Took over 9 yrs to get it roadworthy. 1st time at a run what you brung test and tune track night at a local drag strip, with an 9 inch slick, it ran a 13.9. After sorting the carb and distributor ( the advance was stuck, carb kept leaning out) it ran a 13.2, on modern radials. With the slicks the best he ran was a 12.9 at 121 mph. Except for external gaskets, the engine was untouched and nobody really knew how many miles were on it. The C6 got a fluid and filter change and that was all. With driver and 1/4 tank of fuel, the car weighed in at just over 4200lbs. I'm no Ford guy, but to this day, his car is still pretty fast, clicking off low 13s and when he launches right, high 12s. The heads were rebuilt, but short block has never been apart.

    What I don't understand is how a Red Torino 429 scj can vary with times of 13.71 vs Red Cuba with 440 of 13.78 on here to another 1970 Torino 429 of 12.93 to a Transam of 13.23 to a 1970 Red Torino 429 of 13.64 vs a Camaross396 of 13.59 to a 1970 Torino 429 with 13.08 vs Olds w-31 which wound up doing real bad so didn't write down time to finally a 1970 Torino 429scj of 12.72 to a 1969 Yenko 427 Camaro of 12.0 then 12.59. These times ranged so badly that I thought maybe read end as one guy stated that stock was geared 3.91 with Detroit Locker gearing being 4.30 but that couldn't be right as narrator advised 1970 Red Torino with 429scj had 4.57 factory gearing for 12.72 race so something else had to account for difference of 1.27 seconds so what????? Oh Yeah, one guy on here stated that Torino had to be running real headers as no way factory headers sounded that loud but he can be wrong as he is listening to computer speakers which can simulate real headers from factory headers with over the counter turbo mufflers.

As far as I can recall, the only factory installed engines available from the 1964 model through the early 70s, while they were still performance vehicles, were 389s, 400s, and 455s. I have no doubt that some aftermarket enthusiasts installed 421s in their GTOs, but it wasn't a factory installed option available to the public, and any such combination wouldn't be eligible to compete in the Pure Stock Drag Racing class. I was fortunate enough to own a 1969 Ram Air III GTO Judge back in the day. Wish I still had it but it got totaled during the late 70s while I was in the Navy and stationed in Puerto Rico. A construction worker fell asleep at the wheel after a long day at work and rear ended the GTO at around 60 mph while I was stopped at a red light. Luckily for me, there were no cars stopped in front of me. The GTO buckled from the impact and skidded a couple of hundred feet down the adjacent grass median. 4:33 gears in a pontiac makes zero sense. To high of a ratio for that motor, runs it out to fast. 3.90 would have been a much better choice. It's not a Chevy that gets all its power on the top end. That and I can't imagine the traction issues that would come from that gear ratio and a 4spd. Like dude can't even floor it until he is deep into 2nd gear without sit and spinning. That Torino with the CJ and Detroit locker is set up exactly the opposite. It's more of a high rpm motor so he can get into it right away without spinning his tires and going no where. That locker is great for traction. Additionally I think the GTO learned the issues with 3 dueces... Hard to get them synced exactly right and most of the time they give no better or WORSE performance than a single 4 bbl.
