Delton 1/2" scale Garden Railroad Passenger Cars - Colorado and Southern

  • In the 1980s and '90s, as Garden Railroading in America was really becoming popular, Delton Locomotive Works, who was best known for their beautiful 1/2" scale brass locomotives released a set of great-looking passenger cars.
    Garden railroading had been mostly modeled in LGB size 1:22.5 scale, which made the scale gauge meter gauge, perfect for the German prototypes made by LGB. But as American prototypes became popular they were a bit off in 1:22.5. YET instead of going to a proper scale of 1:20.3, American companies went smaller at 1/2" scale. Probably just to keep the models smaller and therefore the curves tighter and the models less expensive.
    The Delton cars are quite well made in spite of being really small. They do look strange when used with 1:20.3 scale models, but not too bad with 1:22.5 scale. And an entire train of 1/2" scale looks great other than the problem of the track gauge being 1/4" to wide.

    I believe the original Delton molds eventually found their way to both Aristo-Craft and Hartland Locomotive Works

      Yup. The passenger cars were in limbo for years. But I assume the bankruptcy court solved that?

    Absolutely super video. It showed, clearly, the different (large) scales. As I remember, your Mason Boogie is 1/2 inch scale, please run it too, if you can. Now that would be a super DCC conversion project.. Dale, you have enough projects to keep 10 people going full time 24/7/365. When will you ever get them all done? Hopefully NEVER.
    Someone once told me to loose some weight, (I am, a very slender person with a little middle age drift). I said; "I've already lost WAIT, that's why I'm always in a hurry". That's similar to someone telling me to retire, I said; "Isn't that something you do to your car, every now and then?".
    Any way, keep perfecting the art of screwing around. ;-)

      It came to me yesterday why in the 80’s the brass locomotive people wanted to go 1/2”!!! I’m going to post that as soon as my brain responds to the coffee. But I’d love to fix up all my 1/2” scale stuff. DCC it. Kadee coupler it all. Lower all the freight cars. Make the lights all work.

    I agree so much with you! You gotta have your cars lighted for night running! Question Dale, when you remove the Delton couplers and add Kadee couplers, do you just turn your trucks 180 degrees or do you cut off the coupler tongue's?

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. I cut off the tongue. And in a perfect world shorten the hight of the car. Just a bit. Often really hard to do. But the coupler comes in high and the look is better shorter. But these cars look pretty good as is. But that means shimming the coupler a bit. There is a washer above the truck that I may remove? Need to mess with it.

    I think if you check again you will see that the Delton Combine did have power to the lights from both trucks. I had a set of these back in the day. As you say, they were very well built but in the end there were too many scale problems that bothered me and I ended getting rid of them. Aside from the fact that the gauge was 1/4" off, the window arrangement was pretty freelance. I could never find a prototype C&S or D&RGW coach that had the windows arranged in pairs. They sat too high and they were too short to match any prototype that that I wanted to model. Half inch scale would have been really cool but 1 1/2' gauge track never caught on.

    Delton evolved into someone else. Then evolved into Hartland at some point. And Hartland just recently went out of business.
    Those are good looking cars. And look great with the C16 or 18. All the Delton stuff was nice. But kinda lost out to the evolution of scales in the G gauge world

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup. Sad history? Well only sort of. Delton was a force to be reckoned with. When “G gauge” became popular in the US Delton came forward with brass locomotives. And then affordable plastic trains. But unfortunately the market was evolving rapidly and Delton was caught in the middle of it. Hartford was always connected to Delton and took over much of the product line. Some went to REA. Polk hobby. And hartford and Polk and almost everyone were also caught in the evolving hobby. Bachmann pretty much killed everyone but even Bachmann died. Sort of. In fact they were among the first to “die”. But the Chinese manufacturer not wanting to loose that income simply bought Bachmann. And then killed everyone. Including LGB. It’s a long story and needs to be….. A SHOW!!!

    • @timothyboles6457
      @timothyboles6457 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToyManTelevision Accucraft and Bachmann kinda started going at it. Trying to take over the market. It seems like when Accucraft came out with the AMS line that really hurt Bachmann.
      I think everyone else just got sucked into China and lost

    Dale: The two of you are a hoot. FYI: Did you notice that your RPO wobbled crossing the frog of the turn out?

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ken. Yup. Gauge problems. The Delton trucks are soooo badly put together. Not a bad design. But slap dash assembly. Gauge all over the place. The RPO as one axle that’s so wide it rides up in curves and crossings. Others are narrow. I’m guessing they are off by + or - .4”!?? But the worst are the electrical pick ups. One axle to one light. So the combine: no lights in the freight end. (Stupid). One light in the passenger end (silly). One axle powered to the one light. (Beyond stupid). The chair car: two lights. One axle to each light. Really Delton?? Sloth. But I think they were so far behind and so “broke” they just slammed these together.

    • @kenshores9900
      @kenshores9900 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ToyManTelevision So what do you do? Change the truck assembly or remachine the wheels in the trucks to try to correct the alignment.
      On another topic been trying to build an N scale modular layout but the birch that makes the modules is a victim of war. I am looking at buying modules from Canada so I can make an inside curve.
      I neglected to tell you how good it looked when you ran your train down that section of line in the garage. The marker light on the loco and the switch stand. You all have such an attention to detail. Thanks for sharing it. I do look forward to watching your episodes for ideas and tips and tricks.

    I've been in "G" scale for many years. I really miss Aristo-Craft. Among my many Aristo pieces is the gorgeous Blue Comet set. The huge steam locomotive and tender weighs a ton. I wonder what that set is worth today. I also have a pair of Aristo RDC's lettered for the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines, my local system. I have several Aristo locomotives, steam and diesel. And I have several Aristo trolley cars, including the Christmas car, the last thing they ever made. I also have several Bachmann "G" scale trolleys. But I have very little LGB, which was always too expensive. Two LGB street cars that I always wanted was Third Avenue Railways {N.Y.} and Philadelphia Transportation Company. Both have operable doors with fold-down steps. Among my many "G" scale freight cars are ones lettered for local companies.
    I also have some 'special order/limited production' USA Trains diesel locomotives with special numbers and a Lionel large scale Conrail diesel with rail sounds. Other than Bachmann, is anybody making "G" scale trolleys these days? I think Hartland made trolleys years ago, but I never got any. They looked somewhat crude in my opinion.
