06/15/2019 I have a 2005 Jeep TJ 4.0 litter that has a similar problem. I tried first to replace the oil sending unit. It didn’t fix the problem. I screwed in a gauge to where the oil sending unit is. I have little to no pressure. That told me that my oil pump has failed. I watched a few TH-cam videos on how to go about replacing the oil pump. Just to see what they had removed before I attempted to tackle this big job. I bought
    1) oil pump
    2) oil 5w30 Mobil 1
    3) rear main seal
    4) rod bearings
    5) oil pan gasket
    6) plastiguage
    7) oil sending unit
    8) oil filter
Dealer- exhaust clips and bolts at header & downpipe
I was able to get my Jeep home without any noises. I replaced the rod bearings figuring, I’m down this far. Might as well replace them. I had no damage to my rod bearings. The plastiguage measurement was .002” I replaced the rear main seal. New gasket and filter with new oil and new oil sending unit. My total is $280.00 for just parts. Luckily, I’m a retired mechanic. I’m getting the oil pan on tomorrow and prime the oil pump by removing the oil pump drive and using a drill to turn the oil pump before I crank the engine.

Oil pressure sensor, it’s a common issue in the 99 to 04 grand Cherokee’s with the 4.7L

@@xtnaglanz3r well I guess it’s your oil pump then and the oil sensor is a common issue but not always the issue

I have the same model and it has exactly the same problem. How did you fix it in the end?

Have you checked your oil level? It could be low, and the pump is starving when you turn. My Jeep is doing something similar right now. But the engine doesn't make any different sounds when the guage goes to zero, so maybe it is just the sending unit.

My 04 Grand Cherokee 4.7 started doing just after I added a quart of oil. Finally replaced to PVC valve and now it is back to normal

In this case ,engine doesn't sound right!I'd say oil pump!Pull out oil pressure sensor and use mechanical test gauge, to make sure!Don't run this engine till you do this.

The battery is dead as well as the oil pressure sending unit or simply the PCV valve

Jean Marc or maybe the tires, or the muffler or the bearings or the brake lights...
      Sorry, I´m joking.

My 04 4.7 did this also, though my motor always sounded perfect. I never trust the factory gauges anyway so I put a mechanical Autometer gauge in and it works all the time. I still have the factory gauge hooked and it's all over the place and mechanical gauge is steady, moving only with rpm and oil temp.

Hey did you ever diagnose the issue with your 2004 4.7 jeep grand oil pressure check Guage issue? I'm having the same problem with mine. Just curious if it was your sensor or oil pump? Thank you.

Good day, sorry the problem solved the problem. Exactly the same thing is happening to me, I thought it was the barbula of oil pressure, that the pump changed the problem and if the oil pressure increased but it left to roll in the truck and again it went to minimum and the engine it starts to sound horrible

Mine did this one time, but I forgot what it was.....simple fix though!! Went to the auto shop the next day it took him no more than 15- 30 min to fix it. Seems like it was a bad sensor.

Oil pressure sending sensor.. Plus I don't recommend if you have an oil pressure problem you don't go out and hammer on the motor! Here's your sign.... Dum dum dum

Jeep Dodge Chrysler all in the same family and they all do the same. It is your oil sensor pressure. It should be right next to the oil filter i have an 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited Sport and it did the same it is about $45+ for part Auto Zone.
