- Ys 8 nintendo switch review, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (イース VIII -Lacrimosa of DANA-) is a Japanese action role-playing game developed and published by the Nihon Falcom Corporation and the eighth installment in the Ys video game series. It was released in Japan in July 2016 for the Sony PlayStation Vita and for the PlayStation 4 on May 25, 2017.
On February 17, 2017, a worldwide release was announced for PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows set for fall 2017; however, rather than being published by long-time partners Xseed Games, Ys VIII will be published by NIS America.

Man, I’m playing through the vita version right now. My favorite YS game of all time. I cared about the characters a lot in this game. Exploring the island 🌴 was fantastic. All kinds of epic moments in this game.
Radical Reggie You inspired me to try Ys 8 on the Vita (my first Ys), it was a fantastic experience - so thank you! I am now just about to boot up Memories of Celceta.

Radical Reggie story is less generic and characters more développed this time around.

To all of us Ys fans it's hard to say anything bad about the series. They are amazing. Gameplay and story-wise both. It really is sad that the series in itself is a hidden gem.
Falcom has accomplished its 35 year old mission to create the perfect action-adventure with Ys VIII.

When you say the Story is the strongpoint I know I wouldn't care about the other flaws. I'm a story first kinda guy and I love me some Ys so I'll def be getting this on my Switch :)
I picked this gamee up on a lark back when the Switch basically had no RPGs. I'm so glad I did. This game was just flat out amazing. Probably in my top 5 JRPGs of all time. Maybe just my top 5 RPGs, to be honest. I'm kind of worried about IX now because my standards were set so high with this one.
It was because of this review, I bought the game. I love it, and I appreciate the experience I would have missed out on if it wasn't for this particular review. I am definitely a Y's fan now. Dana forever!

Absolutely love this game! Favorite game for me last year. Definitely recommend it to anyone who is a fans of the Tales or Suikoden series for sure.

All YS games are pretty much hidden gems considering how few actually play it.
that's sad. They look like a good action rpg series. Well it's kinda understandable since it's not from Square Enix, every JRPG lovers look that way
So is the music in these games. Ys and Trails (both by Falcom) have some of my favourite soundtracks in gaming. I love how they go for rock mixed with violins.
Perfect game for the switch you can start on your big TV and grind on the portable version. Finished it on he PS4 ad i loved it to death one of my favourite games of 2017, which was a crazy year.

This game is incredible! I've been a fan of the series since Ys Book I & II on Turbo CD! You're absolutely right! This game (and series) definitely needs a bigger audience! Also, Sunshine Coastline is such a jam! :-D

Ys 1&2 on the Turbo CD was my first Ys game too. One of my favorite games of all time for sure. And I couldn’t agree more about Sunshine Coastline. Such an epic track to start the adventure to lol

It bothered me to the point where I'm going through the NG+ mode just to get the true ending! Dialogue choices don't matter at all, just your reputation.

This is a great game and a fantastic starting for newcomers to the Ys series. Hopefully anyone who hasn't played it yet will give it a chance.

I was so happy to finally pick up my copy this past Tuesday and I'm really enjoying my time with this game! I've known about this series since I was 12 but never had the chance, or the money, to pick up any of the Ys games until now. Playing this game at 26 has shown me that I've missed out on so much! I just picked this up recently on the switch and I'm loving it and never played this game before so umm ya , definitely, 10/10 game imo, it's definitely worth getting it and right now it's on sale

My first Ys game was Ys III: Wanderers of Ys on SNES. After that I didn't play any Ys game until Ys 8 on my Vita a few years ago.
By then I started to play all The PSP and Vita versions. Like the serie alot!!!
So many good jrpgs coming to the switch, thanks 4 the review, was on the edge about getting it or not becuz we are also getting Shining Resonance Refrain, but now gonna get both, my wallet will be crying
Ridley Fights Right?! Ys VIII, Shining Resonance, and Octopath Traveler all within weeks of each other? I think I might need to take some vacation days just to play some RPG goodness.

I will say this is my first actual Ys game that I've ever played and I absolutely loved it.
I originally played the game on the PS4 and the ONLY reason I went out of my way to buy it was because the trailer music's inclusion of the first 10 seconds of the piece "Everlasting Transeunt" was so gorgeous and so compelling that I was like, "You know what, let's take the risk and buy it."
So, many many hours later after finishing the PS4 version I found myself completely satisfied with the purchase. The game was great! I loved how the NPCs were implemented in the game and thought the village defense moments were fun breathers from dungeon crawling. Funnily enough, through my first playthrough I remember thinking to myself, "Man, I wish this was on the Switch." Then it gets its Switch announcement later.
I definitely want to buy this on the Switch, but I most likely won't for a bit until it gets a patch fixing all the localization issues. I had thought that the game was going to include the PS4's updated localization patch, but, from what I've seen, it doesn't look like that was the case, which is kind of a really dumb move. Guess this kinda goes on the track record against NIS America. Here's some evidence:

I didn't notice any localization problems in the Switch version. Has it been patched?
I'm still wrapping up Ys VIII on the Vita and every time I turn it on I am blown away by the soundtrack. I always here frame rate complaints but the game is way better than worrying about that.

I've never played an Ys title and generally prefer turn based RPGs but I've now checked out this video review and your Ys origin one too and your cheer passion and love for the game series has made me want to pick up both copy's on my switch as they are currently on sale and looking forward to diving into hours and hours of this grindy rpg style you describe it as, so just want to say thanks for pushing this and I hope I return here with some fond memories of my own!

it's the 8. at first i didn't pick up ys because of that 8. i though "so there's 7 others i'll need to play?" but after playing it...yeah you got me, i'll go back to play the others. i think for alot of other people, they won't give it a try because of that 8 and the heaviness behind it.
you know I think you are right about that. If they came out with YS : Lacrimosa of Dana it would would have worked better. But I think the title is more for the Japanese market than for us.

Well i am coming from the vita with this game . So the graphics will be a great step up from the Vita for me and i cant wait bc the game is phenomenal in my opinion. Thanks for the video Johnny Boy !!
My only problem preventing me from getting into this game/series is that I am into way too many time consuming jrpg series already.

The first ones in the series are actually pretty quick games and the best so go right ahead.
Thats why a lond time ago I dropped rpgs... but few years ago I started playing them again and man, its probably why we love videogames
Yeah that's why I dropped the Pokemon series back during the Diamond/Pearl era. I got wayy too invested into every nuance of the system that I lacked time for any other games. Worrying about IV, EV spreads, gender, movesets, breeding, collecting/hunting. Had to put it down. Nowadays when I play jrpgs, I try to do only the main story and the most interesting side content.

This game is like Kingdom Hearts, except it's like twice as fast. One of the most fun RPGs I've played.
Also you can actually understand the plot of ys 8 unlike kingdom harts were you need to watch 4 hour long videos explaining the plot of kingdom harts but at the end of the video you still don't understand the plot and all you understood was darkness darkness friendship friendship darkness oh look a Final fantasy character

Johnny has been preaching the Ys series for years. He also stated if you like Zelda you could like this so I decided to dive in with Ys 8 on the Switch. Is it good? For me, yes. Great review and hopefully more people pick this up on the Switch and make it worth the developers while to develop a new game and release the older titles for the Switch.
I'm debating hard on getting the Switch or PS4 version.
Love the Ys series, I have this on PS4 and my girlfriend pre-ordered the Switch CE for my birthday this year, happy to hear it's a decent port. Bummed out by the 30 fps with drops though, the Switch really should be able to run this at 60. Oh well, not a deal breaker.
Oh yeah, and the music in this game is fucking top notch! Probably my favorite music in the series honestly.
Loved, loved, loved this game. My first Ys experience. I spent over 100 hours with this game, spoke to everyone for every line of potential dialogue, did as many sub quests as possible, farmed items for best and most complete gear, fished, fetched DK mangos, left scraps out for a hungry cat, and found the unspoken truths on murals in the depths of an ancient civilization. Ended with 24 castaways and I believe 260 reputation and 105 virtue. I really enjoyed the individual stories, story at large, and the story as it was a chapter in Dana’s eyes. The art and music were fantastic. It was a lot of fun.

The title music in this game is some of the best music I have ever heard in a video game. Amazing.
I'd never played an Ys game before but decided to give this one a try after your recommendation and watching the game play footage of Ys 8 on PS4. I'm really enjoying it so far. I love the anime art style. And even with the lower resolution and lower polygon count on the Switch, it actually works out quite well in my opinion with the anime art.

I absolutely loved this game. I loved the story & progression, the music was soulful. I have never played a Ys game prior to Ys VIII and I was sorely missing out on a wonderful story.

I’ll be honest, I have avoided JRPG’s my whole life. I think it stems from playing a Final Fantasy game when I was too young and I just didn’t get it. After watching you, Super Derek and GamezofWar, I’ve been getting my feet wet and discovered that I really love this genre! This is a bit daunting as now there are SO many that I want to play. Anyways, your stoke level for this series is so high that I went ahead and preordered the collector’s edition (I’m a sucker for art books) of Ys VIII. Thanks for the awesome videos!

jetro rosnell Yep! And oh my gawd, that was an amazing experience. I find a lot of times when I get to the 75-90% completion point in games, the game seems to drag on and I need to put a lot of effort in to complete them. Ys was such a fun and addictive experience right to the very end.
Finally the wait us over!! Been fighting the urge to buy this on the Vita for a year now.

Okay, you sold me on this game. Only previous experience with the series is Ys1+2 on Wii Virtual Console (Turbografx CD version), and I really enjoyed those, especially the kickass soundtrack. I'll check this one out.
I liked so much your review on the PS4 version that I've bought it and I'm very pleased of knowing that this port is so good, man :-). If I have it to buy it today, obviously I'd buy this version, the "portable" one. Cheers from Spain.
I wasn't sure if this game was for me. I really like Falcom's 'Trails' series of game but I am not such a big fan of action game. But now, you convinced me to try it! Your enthusiasm is contagious^^ Have you played the other games made by Falcom? I am sure that the trails series would be right up your alley!
Played this on ps4 last year. Bought the limited edition because of you. Nearly 100 percented, not sure if I wanna tackle this game on nightmare difficulty. Its pretty long game. But glad I was able to experience this game because of your channel.

Based on your word Johnny, I simply had to get this game and will be taking it to Greece on my holiday shortly! Good news as well is that Base.com here in the UK have dispatched my copy today and it isn't officially released until June 29th! So excited! I keep listening to the OST at work everyday

Finished the game on the Vita and loved it. Bought the game again on Steam on launch week, despite users reporting the game has lots of issues, never even had one other than 1 weird graphical glitch, the game ran fine. Finished it again. Phenomenal game, imo best Ys in terms of story
Damn, you're making me want to grab myself a Switch copy of it. Ys 8 on ps4 is one of my favorite games of all time. Definitely my 2017 goty even with everything else there was last year.

I played on PS4 and simply LOVED IT. Even with that bad translation, it was amazing and definitely my favorite Ys game. I’ll get it on Switch just to have an excuse to play it again and share with everyone that they NEED to get this game too. ❤️
I completed every side quest and found every character. You do their quests to build up your reputation. Once you’ve maxed out your reputation or at least have it up to 200. You then unlock the true ending.
I'm engaged to try that game, Johnny. Your love for Ys drive me to play this and check for myself, honestly it seems really fun.
I picked up 9 for a great deal. It was my introduction to Ys. Being that 8 is reviewed better, whatever deal I had for 9 was just shattered ordering 8. Easy to find, just pricey now. Lol.
Hi Johnny just finished this a few weeks ago on PSV.. Got several YS titles in the collection through still have quite a lot to play through.. I started with completing YS VII which was a great introduction!
BTW love the character Dana and the apparent Atlantis type inspiration.. I hope there’s more to come along these lines from Falcom!!

This is a great compliment to Xenoblade Chronicles 2, both are similar but far from the same. I’m more at ease playing this, kind of like a Xeno “lite” if you will. Everything is so right and airy ,a really good rpg to start after you’ve finished Xenoblade 2.

I finished PC version and it was wonderful. Emotional story, cute and and good characters, very enjoyable gameplay and gameplay mechanics and so on. So it absolutely worth the price.

Played it on the PS4 and all I could think about was that game, even at work. I don't like portable systems a whole lot so I'll just stick with the PS4 version.

I play ALL the Ys series on my beloved PS Vita. Love 'em to death. I usually HATE grinding on RPGs, but the Ys series is so balanced it doesn't feel like grinding. I hate grinding in Persona and Final Fantasy series.
Playing it on ps4 right now. About 35 hours in. Love this game.
