  • In this video, I start ballasting the track on the layout. Also includes a running session at the end. Hope you like it!

    Hi Hugh,
    The ballasting is looking great and I would think marks the start of the scenics part of the build so good luck with that will look in to your future video's to see Perth take shape and as always a very nice running session to finish off well done.
    Cheers Robert.

    Hi Hugh - Hope you are all well north of the border. I just love your running sessions, I could watch trains running round your layout for ages.
    They run so smoothly you would not be aware they have passed over points, they are that smooth. Something I will be aiming for eventually.
    I got very excited when I saw the rake of 14 Esso/Shell wagons trundling along, definitely something I will have on mine.
    Always interesting watching someone ballast their track, we all have our different methods and I cannot wait to start doing mine, I find it very therapeutic.

      Hi Chris. Good to hear from you and thanks as always for you nice comment. Yes I also surprisingly find ballasting therapeutic. I wasn’t looking forward to it but had spent time ballasting our club layout and quite enjoyed it! I’ll have another running session video out later next week as I had some film footage left over from this so thought I’d put it out there so watch out for that. All the best. Hugh

    Hello Hugh. Another great video. You and I agree100% on the method of ballasting the track. I tend to add a sliver of light card between the point blades and track as an extra precaution as I do not use the live frog. Progressing well. Cheers, Bob

    Hello Hugh! Great to see another running session as always, but the ballasting technique is lovely and simple, which I always think is how to approach it. Like you say, if you do too little, you can always add it later. I quite like to use a different colour ballast when levelling up areas as it indicates that it was laid at a different time and can look good as it’s like you are modelling a newly laid track section. Always looks good at junctions 😎
    Cheers fella, have a nice weekend 👍🍀🍻

    Looking good,plus good use of sleeper grime. I sometimes think sleeper grime can look too dark I had to lighten it with vallejo greys, but I have concrete track. The station approach has some nice trackwork and signalling.

    Another excellent video. I see you have a hatch in the floor for loft access, so curiosity compels me to ask... what's behind the door?

    • @perthsouth5576
      @perthsouth5576  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ian for watching. Yes the floor hatch is the access via a loft ladder. The door hides the hot water storage tank and a small general storage area. Got a lift up section of the layout in front of it for access. Hugh

    Excellent layout. Do you happen to know what the gradient is on the curved incline at 09:50? I'm planning something very similar for my own layout. Your trains seem to have no trouble climbing it, even with 6 coaches!

    • @perthsouth5576
      @perthsouth5576  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi and thanks for watching. Gradients are about 1 on 40 which was the shallowest I could get. In truth, some trains struggle especially if they have been slowed awaiting a path. I will eventually add more weight to the lighter steam locos to ensure adequate adhesion.
      Hugh

    • @AlecDenholm
      @AlecDenholm ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@perthsouth5576 I am aiming for 1" in 48", or near enough 2%. My trains, at least on that branch, will only be 4 coaches long so it sounds like I'll be ok. Thanks for the info!

    • @perthsouth5576
      @perthsouth5576  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ray. I took the photographs myself from a local hillside above Perth and used a photo editing software to form a panorama. Got it printed out commercially. I did a video on the backscene if you wish to look back over my previous videos. I still need to fill in scenery at the bottom of the backscene to hide the gap! Will get round to that soon. Hugh
