Indeed the Ex-GWR 72xx was/is indeed the biggest tank engine, the only tank engine with 2-8-2 wheel base. Extremely powerful, all three preserved have never run, 7200, 7202 and I think it's 7229. 7202 is very close to completion at Didcot Railway Centre and 7200 us currently undergoing restoration at Bury, East Lancashire Railway, the final one 7229 is also soon to be restored I believe!
@Laquelectro I've heard nothing of either three of them for some time now. Think they have entered that quite stage where no one really knows what's happening with them and then at some random point they are just ready to be run.
haha - I know what you mean actually, the City class is unusual looking actually! But yeah - unusual engines is a great idea for a theme - any other ideas of engines to feature?? :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It's crazy to think that Britain's largest locomotives where comparable in size to the U.S. medium sized locomotives. I will say The British sure made some good looking locomotives. An absolute work of art.
Impressive. Pretty sure I watched a video once, think it was called 'Over the top with the Duchess', was about the Duchess of Hamilton on the Carlisle Settle line and I recall a comment being made that they were the most powerful steam locos ever built and no fireman could shovel coal quick enough to get it to full power.
Sam'sTrains They know how to do it. It‘ll have a nanometerical perfect German boiler, like Tornado and go way over the speed limit so the train police have to catch it in their class 47.
What Stanier did with the Coronation class is fantastically ridiculous: He put the biggest boiler on top of the longest wheelbase with the tallest cab. I love it.
It’s funny that in the UK a 2-8-2 is concerned one of the largest locos in the UK when in the US 4-8-4s were average sized Also if you ever want to look at some beautiful streamlined American Steam locos my personal favorites are the Southern Pacific Gs-4 class and the Norfolk and Western J class
haha yeah very true - but that's a good indication of the typical size differences between the US and the UK - we were very restricted over here! Ahh those sound stunning - I'll look those up! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Brilliant running session Sam! I also have the Hornby "Duke of Gloucester" (R3236). I really like your Coronation class "City of Birmingham", that does look awesome. Roll on the next video. Keep well and stay safe, regards Gary.
The Big Bertha was a 0-10-0 tender engine built by Midland Railway for banking duties on the Lickey Incline. The other 0-10-0 locomotive was an experimental tank engine designed by James Holden for the GER.
A wonderful 'Big Boys' comparison Sam....all very powerful and all handsome in their own right. Unfortunately I'm of the age where I can remember seeing all class shown working on BR, excluding Tornado which was built in recent times, and I've also seen that many times. For me despite being a WR man, the most impressive loco without a doubt was the Stanier Pacifics....so powerful, that a fireman couldn't keep up with its appetite for coal, so they were later fitted with mechanical stokers....Regards...Bob
haha thanks very much Bob - yeah it was lovely to run some of the big'uns all together! Ooh i agree - the Stanier Pacifics are superb, especially those coronations! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Our heaviest steam loco was the class 303. It was a huge 4-6-4 passenger loco with a 10 wheel tender, its weight was 116.5 tons (191.5 t with tender). The class had a short career (10 years), do its high weight, and after the war there was no need of locos like this, (and that is still the case, so even the one preserved at the museum is in good overall condition, they not planing to make it operational ever again) so the class was withdrawn in 1962. Today we have Co'Co' locos up to 124 t of service weight.
As for my fleet the biggest loco I have now: - tender: the 4-8-4 ATSF 2900 class (in a wrong livery do to Bachmann) with 231 t - tank: 2-10-2 DRG class 95 (ex T 20) with 103.7 t
So many cool locomotives Sam 👍! I can't really choose my favorite. I think I like the P2, the Peppercorn A1, & the 9F the most- they are so cool and beautiful! Oh and like you, I do quite enjoy the BR Blue livery.
Hi Sam nice video just this week I've been going through my collection seeing which one is the longest and its is the class p2 and my coronation class thought i have the railroad p2 and blue coronation.
I recently started collecting OO scale myself. The seem to perform better than any other model trains I've seen before. And there mighty nice to. I really like the Evening Star and the P2. I enjoyed seeing those in this video. There my 2nd and 3rd favorite, respectively, but my favorite is the Mallard. I've got one on a track with 35.5 inch curves. I may be a bit of a hethen for running my OO scale trains on bachmann EZ tracks, but I like the larger curve radii. I feel like the ones offered by hornby are a bit extreme, even the larger ones, while a 35.5 inch curve from bachmann could accomodate even a 4-14-4 AA20
Thanx for this video. Large Steamers are a wonder to behold, especially in the "Streamlined" bodies. How many Streamlined locomotives do you have in your massive inventory? Perhaps a Streamliner video would be interesting to do. Here in the States the "Art Deco" styles just make me drool, I don't have much knowledge of US streamliners but you have made me curios enough to do a bit of research into them. Thanx again Sam, love your channel.
My pleasure Scott - I agree, got to love them!! :D I'm not too sure how many - I bet there must be about 15 streamliners, but I'll have to count - I did do a video on them a few months ago, if you fancied checking it out?? :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The Stars on some Locomotives were Lend-Lease types, in British service the star was painted gold (most commonly on hospital and cadaver trains) and that's part of the reason those that lost a relative or loved one are referred to as gold star parents, loved ones etc with those shipped to the US having the star painted white and those shipped to the then Soviet Union having the star painted red. The remaining Krieges Locs being used for freight trains in the former Yugoslavia (last I heard there were 5). The Decopod was so named because of the caterpillar drive (Decopod is Russian for caterpillar), the Decopod was originally an Imperial Russian design (first designed in 1892) and produced in Imperial Russia, USSR, and the US (by the Lima Locomotive Works and Baldwin Locomotive Works) although there were also rumors of construction of the Decopod in the UK.
The stream lined Coronation class locos I think we're the most beautiful locos of all time. Amazing how you give such a interesting commentary using toy trains.
Lovely video. A small part of me was hoping you would make something like this to follow up on the “smallest engines” video. I don’t suppose one could make a video on the most medium locos... Yeah, maybe not. Anyway, I wanted to comment to point out the little clip montages that played while you talked about the loco’s history. It was a really lovely touch. The shots were great, especially the ones where the camera comes down to the track level, which really adds a realistic flair to the trains. I suppose editing the clips together like that makes it easier to cut out takes with possible derailments or things like that. ;) Anyway, I’ve written way too much as usual. Loved this one as always. EDIT: I wanted to put the Evening Star in the poll as my favorite but I seem to have lost it. Is 5 the limit for poll choices? Anyway, I chose Cock of the North, as it was a strong 2nd favorite.
haha yeah - not sure how I'd go on with most medium locos - but maybe fastest would be fun? You're very kind anyway - thanks so much for your lovely comments!! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Even before you rolled out the 9F, I was thinking to myself "Hang on, a 2-8-2 was heavier than a 2-10-0?". Double checked ... Yes, "Evening Star" was considerably lighter than the P2s. I'm now going to resume the video and watch the hilarity of running a 2-10-0 on that kink below Gordon's Hill ... :D
Great running session, Sam! Marvelous locomotives, all of them; I especially love the LNER P2 and the LMS Coronation! I have an unusual request... Can you do a "Day Out" video with your LEAST favorite locomotives in your collection? Least favorite as in terms of quality, performance, price, etc? I would appreciate it very much!
Thanks very much mate - yes the P2 for one is definitely emerging as the favourite! That's a great idea - I will be doing my bottom 5 ranking locos at the end of the year - which will be similar to that! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

We also have, currently in operation, the Norfolk and Western "J class" 4-8-4 which is nearly 110ft long, 16ft tall, and around 250 tons (guess )....you guys have "miniature" locomotives, but I love them anyway ...!
haha for sure - the USA designs dwarf these British ones... great to hear that one's being restored, that'll be great when it's finished! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@A.i.r_K yes,but there's gonna be a 7TH member. Also, there's a replica of Cock O' The North in streamlined form on the way,but so far there hasn't be progress
Do you think you could get the new Flying Scotsman in the current BR green? Just saw it go through my town and found out about the model and am interested but a rookie at this stuff so I’m not sure of anything about it
my dad has evening star used to love just pushing it around without the tender as well no power there good running seasons, maybe smallest diesels and the largest next?
Amazing video today Sam my favourite was both the TTS sound ones and how do you turn the volume down on the TTS sound locos because I’m getting one for Christmas
Hey James - there are certain CVs that you need to change in order to adjust the volume - the TTS manual (included with the model) will tell you how! If you struggle when the time comes, let me know and I'll help you! :D Cheers, Sam :)
I have bought a LMS Garrett from Hattons and you can get a LNER Garrett from DJH kits. Maybe you could suggest to Hornby to bring out a Big Bertha. Here’s hoping someone does Good session tho
I keep meaning to ask this, Sam. How many times do your locos, like in your reviews or running sessions run around the layout in between recording of your videos?
Hi Lewis - it depends on the loco - ones I like run quite a bit! Ones I don't like so much just run for videos - more or less ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Oh, right. It’s just that in one of IC82’s videos, he said it takes a locomotive or something, about six times around the layout, in between shots.
Those engines would be rather small compared to American locomotives of similar wheel arrangements. The p2 would be a similar size to a Southern Railway Ms class 2-8-2.
Would it be possible if you could run some Australian locomotives in the future or do a double header running session? And also what a good running session. My favourite was the P2.
I'd love to do that! I don't have any locos from Australia at the moment - do you recommend any of them?? Glad you liked the P2! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
At the start of the video you mentioned big Bertha but I’m actually unsure if there are any complete official models. this year I might get a A1 for my birthday
I think my favourite was the MASSIVE GRESLEY P2, do you know that Gresley made 2 P1 class 2-8-2 for mineral traffic. In 1925 #search on wikipedia to see more info, Thanks.
You should do a running session of Britain's most famous engines, like Duchess of Hamilton, the Flying Scotsman, Mallard, the Rocket, Thomas, Stepney, Tornado, etc.
The tornado Pullman was my first train set. I have it in the green, and the two little wings on the sides of the front keep falling off. How do I stop this?
Ahh that's fantastic! Is that the smoke deflectors? If they keep falling off, they may be damaged - I'd re-apply them with blu-tac, or if you dare, super glue! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
These are technically 00 scale, but they run on H0 gauge track! Not all of these have sound, but certain ones do - you want to look on Hatton's or Rails of Sheffield - and you're looking for ones labelled TTS sound (you will need a DCC controller for them of course) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My favourite would have been the Southern Rail Bulleid Pacific in either condition and I can’t believe it that you don’t have one. Great session just the same 😉
As previously stated, I've been considering making a fan made Thomas character being an LSWR G16-- and pairing her up with an LNER Wheatly Y10. The tricky part is deciding on liveries and names for them.

Do you think you could get the new Flying Scotsman in the current BR green? Just saw it go through my town and found out about the model and am interested but a rookie at this stuff so I’m not sure of anything about it
Yeah I'd love to actually - those look really lovely!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
my dad has evening star used to love just pushing it around without the tender as well no power there good running seasons, maybe smallest diesels and the largest next?
Ahh really?? Did it not have the tender then?! Yeah that's a good shout - I could definitely give that a try!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
No Southern Railway Merchant Navy Class loco? Really good looking in rebuilt condition!
They are fabulous machines - but not that huge - they were designed to be quite lightweight!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
These locomotives are pure beauty!
Thanks so much Aaron - I think so too!! :D
cheers,
Sam :)
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains ok thank you awesome video still
Great locomotives and great running session :)
Thanks a lot Connor! :D
Was the flying scottman one of largest
Yes! She was an A1/A3, which weighed 92 tonnes - so pretty large! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I like both the P2 and the 9F
Me too!! :D
Is big Bertha a steam locomotive?
Amazing video as always Sam.
Thanks so much mate!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Mallard is everyone's favourite high speed train
Mine too! :D
And i love
This was uploaded on my birthday
Love ur vids sam and fantastic locos
Thank you!! Really glad you like them :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have bought a LMS Garrett from Hattons and you can get a LNER Garrett from DJH kits. Maybe you could suggest to Hornby to bring out a Big Bertha. Here’s hoping someone does Good session tho
Ooh sounds great Michael - yeah a big Bertha would be awesome to see in model form - I'd buy one for sure! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam you should do a video running your most expensive locos keep up the great work
Great idea Ryan - I could try that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Pls do unusual locomotives Sam! P.s great vid!👍
Great idea Tobin - which ones do you think I should include?? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
One has to keep in mind that the loading gauge in Britain is comparably low. So a 120 Ton Locomotive looks even more impressive...
Yeah I guess that's what's so impressive about these - being long as opposed to bulky!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I keep meaning to ask this, Sam.
How many times do your locos, like in your reviews or running sessions run around the layout in between recording of your videos?
Hi Lewis - it depends on the loco - ones I like run quite a bit! Ones I don't like so much just run for videos - more or less ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Happy Halloween Sam!😉
Happy halloween! :D
Beautiful Art Deco train!
Thanks Olin! :D
The LMS pasifics is in the York railway museum. sorry I didn't know how to spell pasifics. Adam Young
haha no problem - yes it is indeed! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I forgot the name of the 2nd engine but I love the feature of how the front of its boiler can Open up
Me too! It's very awesome isn't it?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Also Sam, please answer this, did u read the document I wrote
Would it be possible if you could run some Australian locomotives in the future or do a double header running session? And also what a good running session. My favourite was the P2.
I'd love to do that! I don't have any locos from Australia at the moment - do you recommend any of them?? Glad you liked the P2! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Is there any chance that we will see any garratt locomotives over the course of 2019?
There's a good chance - Hatton's and Heljan are producing one, so I might look into it! :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
At the start of the video you mentioned big Bertha but I’m actually unsure if there are any complete official models. this year I might get a A1 for my birthday
Yeah this is true - sadly there are none to my knowledge! Ooh awesome - hope you do mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
lovely loco run and i think the 72XX were 4 tons heavier than a GWR king
Thanks a lot mate! Ahh pretty close then - the King nearly ran in this session, but I let 9F go instead!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think there are three 7200 class preservation under resotration.
I think my favourite was the MASSIVE GRESLEY P2, do you know that Gresley made 2 P1 class 2-8-2 for mineral traffic. In 1925 #search on wikipedia to see more info, Thanks.
Ooh great choice - yeah I really like that one too!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
3:06 2P ????? you mean P2 ?
Yeah that's right - I got confused! ;D
We’re do you get your trains
All over the place! Hatton's, Ebay and Train fairs are the main ones though! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I'm a big fan of the LNER so nice to see p2, can't wait for the prince of Wales to be completed.
Ahh me too - it's going to be amazing to see one of them running at last!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You should do a running session of Britain's most famous engines, like Duchess of Hamilton, the Flying Scotsman, Mallard, the Rocket, Thomas, Stepney, Tornado, etc.
Yeah that'd be great actually - I will hopefully do that one some day! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
The Coronations are truly beautiful locomotives, you're missing the winged lights off the front of City Of Birmingham though
They certainly are! Yeah that's true - was that way when I bought it sadly! :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam'sTrains ok thanks!
Quick question: are those locos Ho scale? If so, where have you bought them because I cannot find any of the ones with sound.
These are technically 00 scale, but they run on H0 gauge track! Not all of these have sound, but certain ones do - you want to look on Hatton's or Rails of Sheffield - and you're looking for ones labelled TTS sound (you will need a DCC controller for them of course)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains ok thank you! Yeah, I got a little confused there, I have little men in Ho scale that's why. Looking at the box now it says 00 gauge XD
My favourite would have been the Southern Rail Bulleid Pacific in either condition and I can’t believe it that you don’t have one. Great session just the same 😉
Great pick there Kenny - yes those are lovely, and I have quite a few of them - they're just not particularly large ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It is weird hearing a 2-8-2 being a large steam locomotives as those were about the same size as an American 4-6-4 switcher
For Christmas I think I want to buy the hornby or Bachmann flying Scotsman double tender and some hornby and bachmann thomas and friends models
Good idea get gordon and henry if you do!! There the best
Ooh sounds awesome - hope you love whatever you go for! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains thank you
As previously stated, I've been considering making a fan made Thomas character being an LSWR G16-- and pairing her up with an LNER Wheatly Y10. The tricky part is deciding on liveries and names for them.
Ahh that sounds awesome - all the best with it mate! I'm sure you'll come up with a great livery! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
