OUTSTANDING WORK
Outstanding work here with the Checkrail Chairs........such patience and attention to detail.
This is what quality modelling, and faithful interpretation of the 'Railway Scene' is all about...
Well done...........!
I remember travelling through Perth many times during the 1960's.......and especially with a 'Scottish Railrover'
on a holiday with friends for Scottish Route and Shed Bashes.
The 'Railrover' was unique, being valid down to Carlisle.......so useful for overnight trains to the North.......and to Tweedmouth, (basically Berwick), on the East Coast.Tweedmouth shed was a bus ride from Berwick, where I remember encountering Bus Shelters with doors for the first time.
When the A4's were running out of Buchanan Street to Aberdeen, the last trip out at night was always something special and interesting......and it acquainted us with the cold air of the early morning hours in the Granite City. I thought I knew what being cold was all about, but that morning in Aberdeen, (with the breeze off the water), was an education for a then 18 year old.....
On one occasion we set off walking towards Inverurie and were welcomed into the warmth of a Bakery along the way, where the Baker treated us to warm and fresh 'Aberdeen Butteries'.......

Many thanks James. Lovely to hear the memories of those who were there at the time. Hugh
You certainly don’t do things by half Hugh, in for a penny….
Superb scale size layout coming to fruition, all looking great, you’re certainly the man for the job. Hope to see lots more running videos when you’ve time.
That lives steam loco looks amazing too.
All the best for the future and glad you’re back,
Darren 👋
Many thanks Darren for your kind words. I’m glad you like the layout and enjoyed the video. Hugh
Hi Hugh, good to see Perth South again. Great to see the layout running with that terrific running session. Looking forward to more, cheers for now, John
Thanks John. Glad you enjoyed it. I see that your layout is coming on well too. All the best. Hugh
Always good to see an update, and good to know you are keeping busy! Those point motor housings look excellent. Even if they’re not quite ‘right’ they look good and that’s surely the most important thing 😉
Like signals and check rails, a real Labour of love with those chairs! But I think it well worth it as the result is superb 😎
Nice running session too. Lots of lovely whistles and chimes 👍🍀🍻
Thanks Tim. Appreciate your nice comments. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh
Great to see an update from this wonderful layout - and the running session a very nice way to spend a lunchbreak, particularly starting with a Britannia. All the best, Colin
Many thanks Colin. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh
Great to see you back. A little smile appears on my face every time you post a video. The intricacy of your layout with its many routes and levels inspires me and so many others.. Keep up the good work
Many thanks Jeremy for your kind comment. Glad you enjoyed the video. All the best. Hugh
You'll be needing a dram or two after installing all those chairs Hugh, makes my eyes go googly at the thought!!! Like the new toy btw, at least you won't need to weather that!! I have been humming and hawing about check rails, your post shows how it can be done, however my new specs haven't arrived yet, so will remain under review.
Hi John. Good to hear from you. Yes check rails were a bit of a challenge and I wondered at one point if it was worth the effort. Got there in the end. Hope to see you at the SECC. I should be there each of the 3 days. Speak soon. Hugh
Will do, we can catch up then Hugh, I'm not sure what day(s) I'm kind of hoping Friday without my grandson and Saturday with, but we're in a commissioning starting this week-end so not sure!!
Welcome back. It's great to see Perth South back on TH-cam. The check rails look superb. All that patience and fiddly work has its reward!
Thanks John. It’s good to be back! Thanks for watching again. Hugh
Great update Hugh, still enjoying trainspotting from St Leonard's bridge.
Many thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh
Great to see the use of check rails. now that's one detail i did forget to do. thanks again for sharing. loved the running session. cheer's Tony
Many thanks Tony. Yes it was a lot of work but worth it I think. Jarrow road station is looking great by the way! Thanks again. Hugh
630 rails chairs! That is dedication
Many thanks for watching. Yes was actually more than that but gave up counting! Hugh
Hi 👋🏻 Hugh. Glad you’re back and the layout is looking magnificent 👏🏻
Many thanks Stevie. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh
Hi Hugh nice to see you back, I've missed visiting Perth. Great running session, very enjoyable to watch. Fabulous detailing with the catch rails cheers for now Andy
Many thanks Andy. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh
really good to see Perth South come back and still as good as ever
Many thanks James. Hugh
Nice to see someone model those wide-to-gauge traps so effectively. Well done, Hugh.
Thanks Peter. Glad you enjoyed the video. Hugh
Hi Hugh - Great to see Perth South back and I do love the running shots with descriptions at the end .
Cheers Kev
Many thanks Kev. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh
Good to see you back Hugh, glad to hear that you were just so busy and nothing else. Regards Peter
Thanks Peter. Hope you enjoyed it. Hugh
Hi Hugh,
I was so pleased to see this pop up as did wonder where you had gone so first of all the control you have of the trains is amazing I will never get that good on mine but after all mine is a trainset but I am still speed matching my engines and its a long old progress as can take 2 hours at times and what a running session that was so super to see everything doing what its designed to do. I will look forward to more on the 00 railway but it would be good to see some on the 7.5 in one also and it was nice to put a face to the voice but over all a great video to mark your return to YT. As long as we are all keeping well thats the thing.
Cheers Robert.
Many thanks for your kind comment Robert. Yes I may do a video on our club 7 1/4” gauge track. If you search “Wester Pickston Railway” on TH-cam, you will see some videos of our set up. Most of these are done by the guy who does the “Heritage and Model Rail” channel who is a member of the club. Yes the speed matching takes a long while and can be quite frustrating. I have still been watching your videos but haven’t commented for a while so sorry for that but I think you have done really well with I train. Watching your multiple trains going round is great and you have done well adapting your existing layout. A bit easier for me starting from scratch and designing it for computer control. As you say, as long as we all keep well that is the main thing. Best wishes. Hugh
Welcome back Hugh and thanks for the update. Glad you're well and looking forward to future develoiopments on your wonderful layout.
Many thanks Nick. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh
glad to see you back, layout looks fantastic
Thanks Paul. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh
Welcome back so happy to see you again.
Many thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh
So nice to see you back Hugh, I must admit I was a little concerned. Great to hear of your involvement in other projects. Providing it's train based that's fine 🙂
The layout is looking very good. I was imagining what it will look like with the scenery added but I guess that is yet some time ahead. I like the check rails, a feature rarely modelled on layouts apart from scratch built track.
Thanks Hugh, thoroughly enjoyed the video. Cheers, Bob
Many thanks for your kind comments Bob. Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully not as long till the next one! Hugh
Great to be watching your updates and thanks
Many thanks Don. Glad you enjoyed it.
Hugh
Fantastic! New to TH-cam model railways so not seen this layout before. I could not have done 630! Looking forward to more. Best wishes, Tom.
Thanks Tom. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh
Great for Perth South to be back. The layout is just magnificent. 😀
Many thanks John. Glad you like the layout.
Hugh
great layout i look forward to the next visit
Many thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh
Great progress Hugh, you certainly be busy between releases. Enjoying the detail you achieve on South Perth.
Many thanks Paul. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh.
Great to see another update! Been looking forward to a new video and what progress has been made . Hopefully bump into you at model rail Scotland 👍
Many thanks Ross. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes should be there with the Perth crowd at the SECC so give me a shout if you see me. All the best. Hugh
More excellent work.
Thanks Allan. See you next week. Hugh
Great to see a new video. Never knew about straddle catch points before. Presumably it just gives a signalman greater control over where to force a runaway?
Thanks for watching and for your comment. To answer your question, no, the signalman has no control over that. When the points are set to protect the main line, ie derail a runaway wagon in the siding, both blades are moved inwards and the wagon would derail both wheels at once and come to a stand, “straddling” the points. They are used because there is a running line on both sides of the siding so they are designed to try and prevent a runaway from fouling either running line. Hope that makes sense. Hugh
Great video, and congratulations on your live steam acquisition. Subbed!
Thanks Philip. Glad you liked it. Hugh
Will you be at the Perth
model railway show in June? It'd be nice to meet you!
Yes will be there every day with the Perth Model Railway Group crowd helping run the show. Look forward to meeting up. Hugh
Love the layout particularly the intricate track work and how the trains snake their way through the station. I know isn't finished but are you going to weather the locos? I went to Perth spotting in 66 remember it very well, but the locos were in a poor state!
Hi Dougie and thanks for watching. Yes I plan to weather and renumber and detail locos and stock but concentrating on the layout for now. Would love to have been there in 66 but was an 11 year old in Ayrshire at that time! Thanks. Hugh
Straddle catch points? Very interesting addition. Haven't seen those before. The original photo seems to show it requires two point motors, one for each rail?? But your modeled version shows one??
Hi Bob. Thanks for watching. I think the second point motor was for separate points in the same area. The photo is not the set of points I modelled which I have seen in other photos having only one motor. I believe the blades were worked by a reverse crank mechanism to cause the opposing movement. Hugh
I looked at the photo in the video again and I think you are correct! I’ll have to recheck the historical photos of the points I have modelled on the layout. Thanks. Hugh
@@perthsouth5576 In the photo there are definitely two tie bars, one working the left rail and one working the right rail. The point motor on the left has no tie bar going to the point on the left of picture, so the motor driving that point must be offscreen to the left. But as you say, you are not modelling this particular straddle catch point, and others could have the mechanism you describe. Again, interesting. Will keep an eye out for photos of these. 👍
Hi Bob. I managed to find this photo of the trap points I modelled in the station.
www.railscot.co.uk/img/32/588/
It shows just one motor but you are correct about the original photo. I have a friend who was a signal engineer at Perth so will ask him about the different arrangements. Hugh
@@perthsouth5576 Perfect, thank you. Yes, using one point motor makes more financial sense.
Your railway is certainly coming together….
Thanks! It will take a while yet to get anywhere near completion. Hugh
Hi. Great video as always. What glue did you use to fix the curved check rails in place? Sorry if it’s in the video but didn’t notice.
Hi Paul. It was actually just superglue. The wheels don’t actually touch the rail so once it is stuck down, there is not too much stress on it. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Hugh
I run with some 7.25” trains too in New Zealand will post a link here for you
Thanks Don. Yes would like to see what you have in 7 1/4” over there. Hugh
oh hello!
