  • How to crank start an Allis Chalmers "B" (1940 model)
    VIDEO TIMES:
    0:00 pre-trip inspection
    3:15 the do not's to crank starting your tractor
    5:30 how to start your tractor the right (and safe) way
    9:20 started tractor and driving
    Today I will be showing you how to crank start an Allis Chalmers (AC) model "B". My tractor as you see in the video is a 1940 model... I named mine "Hallie" the Allis Chalmers. most early model "B"s up until the 50s had crank starts with no electrical powered by a battery, the only electrical on these crank start tractors is the magneto which makes power when the crank turns to make a spark and start the engine. 3 easy ways to tell if your tractor has an electric (or battery electricity in general)
    1: usually a tractor with a battery will have headlights
    2: there will be a box in front of the steering wheel on the transmission by where your crank is stored, that box is meant for a battery.
    3: there should be a smaller box attached the battery box where there is a black button, gage, and a hole for a key
    these are the 3 easy ways to visually tell if you have an electric start Allis Chalmers "B" and ike mentioned, years under the 50s "B"s usually don't have electric start unless modified.
    I hope this video helps you, let me know in the comments if you have any questions or if you would like to leave a comment.
    check out this video here from another TH-camr on how to start your Allis Chalmers "B"

    This was a very helpful video! I saved up and bought my Allis WD last year at the age of 14, and I am so glad to see more kids of my generation who still appreciate these old machines!

      thank you. very neat...i myself just turned 14 this past week. yes I am to....kinda hard in school to be the only one in school who wants to talk about this stuff but it is rewarding when I go to tractor shows and little kids like to climb up on the tractor and one-time last year I brought my 317 and let a little kid run the blade on it....it is very rewarding

    I'm glad to see a young man appreciating the B Model. I worked a B model for many years on the family farm. We had bigger tractors, but the B model was my Go-To tractor for general work.

    I grew up on the farm down here in New Zealand. As a kid u remember this old tractor. Certainly cranked that old over many times. Then one day a long came the Massey 28. So the Allis was retired to the family Bach by the sea to tow the boats out to the boat ramp. That was a long time ago.

      Very cool, wow I would have never expected someone halfway across the world would be watching my videos. Yes the Allises are good tractors, I personally don't have any experience on one but I have a friend who has a newer 30hp Massey TLB. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!!!

    Awesome video. I have the same tractor. My Father bought it in the 60's. It was my first driving experience. Now since its so old I often pull it with another Tractor to start it. And your right. These tractors start when the gears are engaged. I get tired of the cranking. Been doing it since I was 10. Very informational and fun to watch!

      Thanks, yes this is my first tractor that I have paid for (not first one I drove. My first "real tractor" was a ford 4000...my channel photo. Before that was a JD 317)
      Yes, the guy before would pull start it. I tried doing that too a few days back and wouldn't go but I think I know what my problem is now (geussing it's flooding itself with the choke or maybe the fuel jets are stuck

    That's a nice looking ol' B ya got there! Sounds good too. I like the sound of the straight cut gears... It reminds me of driving my David Brown 780 back when I had it. Thanks for sharing bud!

    It is great to see a young person appreciate old things.
    Showing it not start was hillarious. We"ve all had those moments. :)
    Btw, I suspect you had trouble starting it b/c the carb flooded the engine, rather than anything to do with the fuel strainer. The engine cleared during your cranking attempts after shutting the gas valve. Once running, the engine could handle the excess fuel.
    Check your spark plugs for carbon fouling and if present, check float height/condition of float to correct problem and make easier starts and avoid flooding problems.

      Yes I love them, yeah It made it for a bit of a longer video but I wanted to show that I didn't quite get it right away.
      I actually had a really bad magneto too!! I ended up having it rebuilt and said that really the cap and the wires were the only thing left on the magneto that were mine!! I am so grateful for how all of it happens so now all I need to do is pull start it to get it alive again since it has been sitting and I will do a follow-up video.
      Yeah so it basically has a completely new magneto and spark plugs.
      Like I said I will do a follow-up video soon
      Have a great day!!!

I'm not sure how long though, I need to make some repairs on the tractor itself and I am in the process of saving for the replacement parts. I hope to make a video on it here soon Hopefully.... assume the field dries up.
      Glad you enjoyed the video

    I think it's not that your float bowl is leaking but more that your needle is leaking in the carb and flossing the carb. The carb shouldn't flood even with the fuel left on.

    • @chjp2346
      @chjp2346 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, your right carburetor float needle leaking, not sediment bowl, causes flooding.!

    Got a sub from me, great seeing the old things alive, just picked mine up but I'm new to the tractor world have no idea what model it is. I've tried to go by serial but can't really find it. I think it may be a B. Once again great video can't wait to see the sickle mower goin

    • @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups
      @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, yes makes me happy to have them going. Is it Allis Chalmers? Serial number is next to the gear shift on Allis Chalmers, and it is most likely a B or a C if it's an Allis.
      If you not sure (or on brand) send me a message of Facebook (tractors trucks and pups) or me email (in the about section on my page)
      Like I said I'm more than happy to help😃
      Thanks again, yes hopefully I can get a video soon, it's been so dry that the grass is not growing....so there is nothing really to mow.

    Question: The fuel shut off is right-tighty = closed/off and left loosey = open/on, right? or no?

    • @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups
      @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups  ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, twisting it to the right (clockwise) closes the valve and shuts off fuel. And twisting it left (counter clockwise) opens the valve

    When mine wont start its usually because its flooded .i drain the gas then turn the gas back on and it starts right up .but i cant lie .im afraid of using the crank .bust a finger .....no more like it' ll bust your arm
