Well, that was fun! Hope you enjoyed the video! Many don’t see the point or humour in this video so I’ll point it out: Not everything needs to be simplified. Simple is complicated. 😂
I like what you said about it being "hard to simplify" in the sense of, how do you bring a logo down to its simplest form without losing the essence of what it represents. That's hard to do well. Great lesson. 🙏
This video has taught me it's easier to overcomplicate than oversimplify. I think for us, it's easy to see it being done, but doing it is a different story. There's so much to consider, especially when you want to retain the identity.
Hello, Will! I am a huge fan! I am from Portugal and I loved watching your interpretation of the rooster. The heart is important, but if you google "galo de barcelos" you'll see that at the end is all about the shape. Please keep rocking!
I really liked that you showed attempts without previous rehearsal, it's clear that work like this can't be done in five minutes... But it would have been more interesting if you considered the history and original message of the logos... In the case of Starbucks, it is a mermaid with two tails (representing the seduction of coffee)... I think that based on this premise, simplification could have another path, no? Congratulations for the always interesting and intelligent videos!
I love how you leave the whole process of your random ideas in the video! Some people think we designers just whip out a brand new logo out of the Wonderlogoland 😅 great video as usual, and also! Can I get pinned?
I feel like the simplified trend started out bad by just taking all the personality out of a company, but it seems like everyone has gotten the hang of it and managed to still keep some uniqueness and recognizability in them. i.e. zerox=bad pringles=good.
I think the ultimate oversimplification font isn't Helvetica, it's Gotham. Set font to Gotham, spell company name like this- C O M P A N Y, put near logo - boom, instant hire
@@willpatersondesign it's so freaking nice to see such great Pro tips From a Pro like you . That helps so much for Noobs like me hahaha ! Keep rocking 😎🤘♥️
This proves how logos are more than just a collection of elements. They're engrained in the minds of people as representations of brands and the elements which we believe are "extra" give character to the logos and also a recall factor. Not to forget, they are in the cultural Zeitgeist for years and years and simplifying them isnt that "simple".
I think the first logo could have been simplified into a singular shape of a rooster without the black stroke. The design Will came up with was a bit of a miss for me.
To be hair, how often does simplifying logos really look good? The fact you don't even like your own designs for oversimplification just tells me people shouldn't do it. We rarely like actually proposed logos that do this.
I actually like the nando's redesign the best of the three but I think that's because I'm way more used to the Starbucks and gorilla glue logos, so any changes to them seem weirder.
Starbucks I would put a circle behind the S make the S white, leave the crown and put three wavy lines under the latter part of the word Starbucks to sorta resemble water but also in the same style as the hair. However I think I left the realm of simplicity. To break it all the way down take off the rest of the letters move the waves under the S with a circle and crown maybe.
My biggest challenge designing logos is owning the decisions I make. Most of the time I'm unsure (don't like what I make) and have to convince myself before presenting to the client, even if I've gotten positive feedback from trusted sources. Do you have any tips or techniques on how to overcome this?
Hi! I do really like your videos for real,I can’t wait for the new one. I just wanted to give some review ,which annoys me a lil. I think you shouldn’t rush that much cus that could ruin the quality of the video. I don’t know why you say that you don’t have time for redesigning stuffs..acc i get it cus some logos take really long time. But I think spendind a lil more time on them would be great. Sorry for my English but it isn’t my first lang :)
The Nando’s logo with the just the “N” with the black stroke looked exactly like the logo for a knock off Nandos fast food chain near my house so not too far off 😂
Probably an unpopular opinion, but the simplified oval variation for the starbucks logo is very good and imo is better than original but people wouldn't recieve it well because they're used to the normal starbucks logo, but it would grow on them, the only problem is that as you mentioned it looks creepy, but I could suggest adding negative lines to represent the texture of fish fins in the background to take attention from the face because it's sort of creepy when all the focus is on the face, but overall I really loved it but didn't like it circular personally but I loved it when it had the oval shape, for some reason it gave it a luxury brand sort of vibe for me. EDIT: Looking back again at the circular starbucks design, the circular one would look fantastic when enlarged and it features fish fins on the sides with the face simplification, I think it'd objectively look better than the original tbh, maybe with some added hair because it'd look sort of creepy. The ultra simplified gorilla glue one is interesting, but I like the original more, the nandos one is a nice try but the original looks a lot better imo, overall nice work dude I really enjoyed this.
Why did you not remove the face from the starbucks one? it was the least memorable element. The crown and fins are the recognisable i think, and the green. Love your videos, fun challenge.
I think for Starbucks, you missed the STAR as iconic part of the logo. It was in the crown, but you didn't copy the negative space element that made it obvious.
I actually liked just the heart with the eyeball. Lol. Was it good? No. But it def that oversimplified corporate vibe that really feels like a committee put it together and ran it though a bunch of poorly selected focus groups. Like the vegans hate the chicken or it was too evicative of a specific country with a problematic history. So the only elements that werent offensive in any way was the heart and the eyeball. And then absolutely everyone hates the redesign and they waste a bunch of time and money only to end up using the original logo anyway.
13:01 IMO, the logo could look a little better if you just erased the eyes, nostrils, mouth and ears off the gorillas face and just keep the original head proportions. But still, I liked your designs.
Will, as a subscriber of your channel and a keen viewer of all your videos, I always look forward to your new content, however, this video seemed a bit different from your usual style, coming across as somewhat rushed. Perhaps a more fitting title for this video might have been "An ATTEMPT to Oversimplify Famous Logos: Work in Progress". It might have been helpful if you would have opened the video with a slightly more in depth case study of a successful oversimplified logo, followed by a detailed process of how you then attempted to do the same. While it was interesting to see you experiment with these logos in Illustrator, it would have been more impactful to see a final version of each oversimplified logo. Including some examples of how they would look against different colored backgrounds or mocked up in their appropriate environments. Please take this as constructive feedback from a loyal viewer who appreciates your work and eagerly anticipates your next video. Keep up the great work! Best regards.
Out of all your videos, this one is kinda in the lows. Would be cool to see you put more effort into it, aka sketch some designs first and all. Oversimplification can sometimes be achieved with shape lines instead of just shapes

The Starbucks logo could be simplified to just a crown with the mermaid fins on the branch’s of the crown.

Eggs Benedict
Starbucks looks like the evil queen locked inside her mirror

The Starbucks crown needs to be simplified
Gorilla just needs the head
For the Starbucks one you could have put money and a star on it
Make more negative space by removing alternate stripes in hair and fins. All those stripes are too busy.
i wonder if adding the subtle curves to the simplified gorillas mouth that the original has would help it
what have you done. you’ve made the starbucks mermaid The Evil Queen from Snow White
you should honestly have put the gorilla face instead of the O in the simplest gorilla glue one
Don't give those companies ideas Will !!!
