Enter Sandman?, you cannot be serious. This song represents the WORST of Metallica, out of all the great Metallica songs you choose this?. Metallica’s GREATEST songs are to be found on the following albums:
      1) MASTER OF PUPPETS.
      2) ....AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

A guy I work with was there too. He knows I’m a huge Metallica fan so he talks to me a lot about them and said they were his favorite band of the night by FAR. He also said even though there were more people there when it was ACDC’s turn and they all enjoyed that at well, that the energy was different when Metallica was up. He said as a Russian he had never experience anything like that before and that the crowd was the most insane when Metallica was playing so he always likes to say that concert was really 1.6 million Metallica fans who just didn’t know it yet

i am older than you, the man, who sadly died, but fathered two boys who are my and my wifes sons, was in the georgian military and attended as a guard, the soldiers were equally in awe, they new, metallica had the crowd

@@senseijoe-xk7jn I always felt nervous for the military guard at that show. They were SO outnumbered.
Had the crowd turned on them, there would be absolutely NOTHING they could have done. But in order to keep a crowd that size in order, the military would be the ONLY way to do it.
You're right....Metallica ruled Russia that day.

Check of the context of this concert:
As part of the past annual series known as Monsters of Rock, Metallica flew over to Moscow, Russia and took part in the country’s first-ever open-air rock and metal concert.
There were 1.6 million people in attendance at this concert, and the show was free.
This concert also took place during a very intense time in Russian history; specifically, it took place one month after the 1991 Soviet coup d’état attempt failed, that failed coup leading to the dissolution of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

Now just try to imagine this, an AMERICAN band at their peak, admired by millions of Soviets going to their show in Moscow in July 1991. Imagine what POWER SOFT was against the Russian government and how it must have felt since in 89 the USSR was forced to leave Afghanistan without winning the war thanks to American aid to the Afghans who were having their territory invaded.
Also imagine that if this show was in July and the USSR was declared with its communist regime ended in December 1991, it means that they should have already been experiencing serious problems probably since the beginning of the year or even around this month of July.
That's incredible. It's incredible to probably see Russians or Americans living there or passing through waving the American flag strongly in the middle of Russian territory.
The size of this American Power Soft with the invention of eletric guitar and Rock is priceless.

С этой "свободой" к нам пришла преступность, массовый алкоголизм, наркомания, террористы и война. Не нужно путать музыку и то, что вы называете "свободой". I argued 2.1M for years but recently came across an interview with a military guard that says at 2.1M they quit counting to go to the concert almost a full hour before the music started and he estimated 600K to 1.2M still in line that were not counted but the gates were left open for them to come in. Imagine what it must have been like to be in THIS crowd in THAT place...NONE of them had ever seen anything like this before, except perhaps on illegal tapes from the black market. Every time I see this video I'm amazed to see American flags being waved in the crowd. Can you imagine what would have happened to these people only a few short weeks or months ago simply for HAVING such a thing in their possession? Even owning recordings by the bands would have been dangerous...now they were watching them perform RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM!
Thank you for another wonderful video. God bless!!

You havent seen Cliff Burton yet.. the late great bassist. Most of their greatest gigs are not Moscow and Seattle.. check Denmark Roskilde 86, Day on the Green 85, Metal Hammerfest Germany 85. This was the Metallica prime before they went super popular. The energy was so primal and very raw from the band

I was at Day on the Green in '85, even found ourselves on the inside album cover from Master of Puppets (Oakland CA crowd on the inside cover ;-)) I saw them 7 more times over the years but that first one with Cliff Burton was EPIC

If anyone here has never seen Metallica, you can still see them. Doesnt matter theyre like 1000 now. They are still absolutely brutal and just as good as they ever were, if not better.

This was the end of the Iron Curtain era. To celebrate freedom one of the things was this concert. It was held at Tushino Airfield in Moscow. By noon, 300 000 festival attendees had entered the area. When Pantera played there were 700 000 in the audience. As the festival went on the number grew to a million. Metallica reached 1,6 million. Closing act was AC/DC. Heard different rumours (cannot confirm this) about how many people in the crowd got injuried due to violent clashes between the public, the police and even military. To oversee the event , there were 11 000 soldiers, police officers, hired security guards and riot police. Very tragic whatever the amount was.

only 600,000-800,000 were viewers, the rest is a myth, 51 people were hospitalized due to the crush, and not in conflict with security.

    • @davidjames3080
      @davidjames3080 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@sergragnar9452 There were definitely clashes with security/police and Interior Ministry internal troops were there waving clubs about during Pantera's set (which was quite aggressive). Pictures can be seen online of baton waving uniformed man and bleeding teenagers/young men.
This is from a reporter for Rolling Stone magazine: “In any case, by four or five o’clock, music wasn’t the issue. Violence was,” wrote Troitsky in an article for Rolling Stone. “I saw no less than a dozen bleeding people, a couple of policemen among them. I saw police cruelly beating up kids, with or without a reason. I saw a rain of empty glass bottles thrown at police lines from the audience. I saw soldiers kicking a guy, lying on the ground, with their monstrous boots.”
Apparently the crowd had calmed down somewhat by the time Metallica got on stage.

Not just losing something on the ground, but losing a life as well or getting injured. And that happened there. It was absolutely insane. I was too young back then, but I envy people who attended this festival!
The crowd was going insane, because they saw these groups for the FIRST time performing at a festival in their country)) I wish i had a time machine to go back just to see this...

If you want to compare their performance between those times and today, I suggest to listen pretty recent live recording, titled "Metallica: One (Daytona Beach, FL - November 12, 2021)". Also the quality of video is much better of course. The song itself is one of their classics, telling sad and quite topical story. 30 years between the performances, and they are still rocking.
Really want to watch more your reactions for Metallica. Thanks!
