Nice to see the pockets inside for diversity, I was going to ask about that but kept watching the video. Can’t wait to see what that field looks like this summer.

Thanks brother! If time allows I'll spot spray those pockets with clethodim to get rid of the foxtail and let them fill in with broadleaf plants and woody stems

I was going to suggest spraying it and I see that you brought that up in the comments. Found you recently and subscribed I love what you're doing. You're living the dream, yep I would clean up the openings and plant some food and perhaps some Evergreens for thermal cover. Keep them short by topping them out

Thanks brother! I've thought about planting trees in those openings but I also want the ability to burn so I may start with seeing what's in the seed bed by controlling the foxtail. We'll see! Maybe I'll do both and just not burn certain spots

Love your videos. I put some switch in 3 years ago would like to burn it this season. When is the best time to burn? Will the fire damage switchgrass that is already emerging in spring or should I do it before the switch re sprouts??? I live in OH a bit south of you.
    Thanks
    Pete

Thanks! The switch in this video was just starting to emerge when I ran fire through it and this stand did great. It essentially acted like mowing so the switch will be fine even if it's just starting to pop. Burning anytime in the spring is good

Nice! Is there a strain of switch that will stand better during a Minnesota winter?

Great video. Good information. Nice work on not giving up on the stand.

Much appreciated Todd! Giving up too early is definitely one of the more common mistakes I see from guys when it comes to switchgrass establishment

That’s right gotta really give it 3 yrs minimum to establish most nwsg. Switch can be aggressive. How’s it look this summer. I’m sure you want more diversity than a mono of switch.

It's looking really good. I have lots of pockets and trails in there for diversity. I actually harvested a buck last year out of this switchgrass. It's been fun to see the deer start to respond to the switchgrass
