    I did this before seeing this video, this was my first year, tons of sorghum and switch all growing beneath it. Seamed to work great

    Awesome video and the proof is in the pudding switchgrass going up with the Sudan grass I was led to believe that switchgrass needed to be alone as good to see the proof ear it's hard to take information when everybody just says things I appreciate your sharing this

      Thanks for the timely reply. Just bought a piece of property and was looking at converting an old field into a 2 acre plot broken up using sorghum and switchgrass. Some will be permanent switch or sorghum.

    I'm glad to see that this works, I did the same thing this year. I just watched a video over the weekend, by Jeff Sturgis, and he indicated that the switch will die from the shade. I was really bummed to see his video and have been contemplating brush hogging my NW screen that'a already 6' tall. I'm guessing if you've had it work in the past, I'm gonna let it go and see how it fares. Thanks for the great video.

      Thank god you didn't brush hog your existing sorghum/switchgrass, screen success comes from not seeding the sorghum too thick, and yes I've had good results with this process before.

      @@habitatsolutions360llc3 Thanks so much. I seeded the NW screen less than 1/2 rate and I have good germination on the switch, so I'm leaving it alone.

    how to do manage the switch grass in the sorgum stand since switchgrass you typically have to manage weeds or burn? Do you just leave the sorghum standing indefinitely and let the switch grow or do you burn both or chemically treat? Whats you're process after the initial planting going foward? Thanks

    Are u going to mow this down every year, do u have a method for no tilling this combination? I know the sorghum is an annual but the switchgrass could stay in several years. Did u have to spray gly and 2 4 D? I’m new to this but like the sorghums faster screening height

    • @habitatsolutions360llc3
      @habitatsolutions360llc3  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not going to mow down every year, may burn it every 3-4 years but the idea is to have a structural divider all fall & winter with some cover habitat for small mammals & birds.

  • @oltincuphabitat

    Did you apply any chemical pre plant or existing weed control.

  • @jackemeott2578
    @jackemeott2578 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Then did or will you mow it all down? Then switch grass will come back next year? The sorghum stalks will remain yes?

    • @habitatsolutions360llc3
      @habitatsolutions360llc3  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, I may also use a pre-emergent herbicide like Simozine before green-up to reduce any switchgrass competition.

    • @redman4bills
      @redman4bills 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isint the purpose of switchgrass to implement screening for years to come? Why would you mow the switchgrass?

    • @habitatsolutions360llc3
      @habitatsolutions360llc3  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@redman4bills The original planting is a mixture of sorghum & switchgrass screen , so the first spring I mow for easier pre-emergent chemical treatment. However seasonal burning and mowing of switchgrass is a normal maintenance practice every 4-6 years.

    Great video, really liked how this one was over some time bringing it all together with the process of the switchgrass 👍🏼👍🏼. So now you just let the switchgrass take over and leave the sorghum to die out ??
