This channel was created to share practical ways the average land owner can set their land apart from their neighbors. Most folks leave 90+% of their land completely unmanaged for wildlife. But those that are willing to roll up their sleeves and get to work can completely transform their property into a haven for wildlife at little cost of their own. Sweat equity is the land managers best friend. So feel free to tag along on this journey with me. I enjoy good dialogue so don't hesitate to comment or ask questions. I'd love to hear what you're up to on your property as well. Godbless and happy habitating!

Frost-Seeded Switchgrass Success- Till and Plant
Switchgrass can be a frustrating plant to establish, but with a good plan (and patience), it's fairly easy to experience success planting it.
I found this old video on my phone this past summer and decided to finish it and show how this particular switchgrass planting did. This was a planting where I did some late summer tillage to expose the dirt for frost seeding.
You'll see that, even with breaking open the seed bed later in the summer, I was still able to establish a very nice looking stand of switchgrass the following year. It all comes down to the prep I did.

The Easiest Way to Create Deer Habitat (and You Can Make Money Doing it)
มุมมอง 6K14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I love it when I see marketable timber on a property because I know that's going to create an opportunity for logging. Logging is one of the fastest ways to completely transform a property. In this video, I show just how much the habitat has changed on our property since we logged. I took a video right after we logged and did a follow-up in this video. It's crazy to see the transformation. For ...
Drought Tolerant Food Plot Forage that Bucks Love
มุมมอง 4.4Kวันที่ผ่านมา
When food-plotting, it's good to plant something for every situation. This past hunting season, we had only a few tenths of rain from mid-August to early November. During that time most of our food plots dried up. But there was one forage that was able to weather the drought. In this video, I show just how well that forage did in spite of the dry conditions. For more about Purpose-Filled Habita...
5 Winter Deer Habitat Projects You Can do Right Now to Hold More Deer on Your Land
มุมมอง 10Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Winter is one of the best times to get out and build up the habitat on your hunting property. It's the highest stress period of the year for deer so what better time to get outside and help them out. It's also the season that falls after the hunting season so you have recent intel on how the deer have been using your property. In this video, I discuss 5 habitat management chores I tend to do in...
5 Deer Shrubs You Should Consider Planting on Your Hunting Property
มุมมอง 44K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Having high quality shrubby cover on your property is one of the best habitat types there is for deer. Now, it can be a bit of an uphill battle to get shrubs established on your hunting property, but if you can get them to go, shrubs are a low maintenance deer plant that can provide high quality habitat for years on end. In this video, I discuss 5 deer shrubs that I've really grown to love on o...
Adding Diversity to Food Plot Forages w/ Pumpkins

Diversity is always king when it comes to planting forages for deer. Knowing this, I'm always trying to think of different forages I can add to our food plot regiment. I had never tried pumpkins before, but decided to plant some this year. They are a very cheap forage that are easy to add around the perimeter of your food plots. Here were the results. Long Day Brassicas for Deer- The Heaviest Deer Browse I've Ever Seen!
มุมมอง 7Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I've used several different food plot forages over my 27 years of hunting. I'm always trying to figure out what the deer on our farm prefer. This year I tried some long day brassicas (80-100 day). I wanted to try these because I liked the idea of a higher tonagge food plot as well as being able to get a brassica plot in earlier. Two of the last three years we've had very dry falls so having a b...
Can You Kill Buckthorn in the Winter?

Creating Instant Deer Habitat and Bedding
มุมมอง 2.7Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I get to work on a lot of unique properties throughout the year with this job. Some properties leave a lot to be desired when it comes to quality deer habitat. But, there's always ways to fix it. This particular property had fairly poor deer habitat. It was loaded with burr oaks, but there wasn't much else going on. So what we did was find the vanes of ash that ran through the property and got ...

Turning an Old Gravel Mine into Powerful Deer Habitat

In my property walks, I get to see plenty of unique scenarios when it comes to deer habitat. This particular property is one I've worked on a lot over the past several years. Switchgrass Deer Bedding- Summer Update
In northeast texas the deer love persimmon trees.
I believe it
Deer flies in my headphones!!😖😖😖
They get nasty in the summer
Great video. Im doing the same in march. I have a area i sprayed 3 times last yr and its bare soil
Should be perfect then!
Nice, any idea if or how many times mowed in first or second year? thanks!
This stand has never been mowed
Thanks for answering, great stand @@PFHabitat
Do you need to clean it off every year to allow the new crop to grow?
No sir
You must not get many pics. Mine last about 2 weeks
1000s of pics. Sorry to hear it hasn't worked well for you though
Great video and your habitat looks great. I’m definitely still learning and have most of the stuff mentioned in the comments. My #1 would definitely be red oiser, the deer on my property eat it year round. #2 Euonymus Americanus aka strawberry bush…deer on my property eat it from spring to fall, if they ate it in the winter it would be my #1 by far.
Night and day difference, nice work
Yah it was great to see it fully recover
Can you provide a place to buy the nanny berry?
I like cold stream farm out of Michigan
@PFHabitat thanks, but I can't find them on my shopping app, do they have a specific website or internet handle?

@PFHabitat thanks
When I cut this winter (maples) I placed a camera in the area. 42 minutes after I left the does we’re eating the tops! It reenforces the need for woody browse!
@toddweston2840 yah it's crazy how fast they find it, especially during a hard winter
Looks great! For perspective, how many acres were you showing?
@longranger99 this wood lot is around 12 acres
@ Great! Thanks. I have about a 10 acre area that I want to create something similar as yours.
We have 5 different wood lots on our farm and they're all around 10 acres. It's crazy how many deer they can hold now even though they're just 10 acres.
Hi Sam, I learn a lot from your videos, thank you for the information. My property in PA was logged in 2017. The south slope was over taken by multi flora rose.
@garyfuhrman9468 shoot, sorry to hear that. We don't have MFR where I'm at thankfully
I hate multifloral rose! The deer love to brouse on it and you can too, also use the rosehips for tea. Ends of the stems taste pretty good! The Missouri Dept Conservation has an excellant short article on which sprays you can use that doesn't hurt natives so bad< I just spray or mow them but I left enough trees that it wasn't a huge problem . Good luck!
Every time I watch your videos, I leave feeling empowered. Your ability to simplify even the toughest concepts makes learning feel possible.
@Make-3250-Weekly great to hear, thanks for watching!
Good news on the thistle, i had some (a lot) was 6' tall throughout my TSI , good to know it gets over taken!
@stevedenoyer5956 yes just requires a lot of patience
did you just leave all the tops and debris where it laid?
Yes sir. Just cut trails and pockets through it post-logging
Your stem count is amazing. it does take a few years to start growing and get the visual. Im in year 2 and you can see the little saplings coming up and the stem count will be very high. probably will have to cut trails through
do you use ground clear on your trails?
Yes in a couple years you should have great bedding structure. Yes ground clear works very well for trails and spraying out deer beds
What did you use to attack the Canada Thistle that you talked about? What chemical? When did you spray? Multiple treatments? I've had a horrible time with that at my place so appreciate any help.
I just let the woody stuff out compete the thistle. In my open areas where I treat it I use stinger which works well
Did you remove the tops and all of then"rubble" after it was logged?
Nope, just the logs. Left the tops
Would like to see how thick it looks in the winter. And question when you clear cut. Is there a certain height that you leave the stumps or do you cut them flush to the ground
In my next video I'll be standing in this area for a portion of the video. I shot the video a week ago. I tend to flush cut pretty close to the ground with a few higher, chest level cuts mixed in for higher stump sprouting, overhead cover
Another great video!!
Thank you!
I may have missed it; how long ago was this property logged?
Summer of 2020
Looks great Sam!
Thanks!
Great video. Thanks!!
Thanks for watching!
I have the same situation after 1 year of logging. There’s lots of trash but the deer manage to go through it. Your trails are what I need to work on this year. Fighting invasives now but making progress. Amazing amount of spotted touch me nots in mine. Deer love it. Looking forward to the coming years.
Trails would be a great idea. They're a lot easier to do before the woody regen really starts to get thick
How many of these you got in the can?! I'm glad you did it - thanks!
Haha almost tapped out from the summer videos. Thanks for watching!
Nicely done!! This is the goal on my property.
Good luck, it's an exciting day when the logging equipment rolls in
We just logged our woods in Michigan last year. It was all 10’ tall poke weed. Will that eventually get shaded out as well?
The woody stuff always seems to win eventually so I would be confident it would. Pokeweed is a nice native to have though while you're waiting for the woody regen to come
@@PFHabitat yes deer forage on it
When did you plant the chicory. My plots were terrible by deer season same deal 2.5 months of barely any rain.
Frost seeded in the spring
Carolina buckthorn is native to south eastern United States
This was non- native common buckthorn.
What do you do with your clearcut logs? Can you use them for some cover?
Yes if there's enough volume we'll pull the marketable logs out with a logger otherwise they make great bedding structure
Sorry, i finished watching the video and it answered the question. Thank you good video.
Thanks for watching!
Another grond cover that deer love is purslane, full of water. Good in a drought. They will hammer that and lambs quarter all summer and fall till the frost.
I've seen them in lambs quarter. Thanks for sharing about the purslane
What do you use to control weeds in chicory that doesn't hurt the clover?
Clethodim/ Crop Oil for grasses and mowing
Excellent video
Thanks!
Can you think of any of those that like wet feet besides the willow? Also, are you able to mail any cuttings of bebbs willow?
Gray dogwood and red osier dogwood do very well with wet feet. Another good one is black Elderberry
Looks like it’s got a lot of shade which will be a contributing factor as well.
Yah the chicory handles the shade well
I am in a VERY COLD zone 5 (probably more like 4 because of my 2,000' elevation) in western, MA. By mid October are we well beyond the date of our first killing frost. Does Six Point Chicory withstand frost or will it die after the first frost? Thanks. Great video.
I'm on the border of growing zone 3. It holds on after a few frosts. The deer are normally on it into early November. Once the snow flies it's pretty well done
@@PFHabitat Thanks. Appreciate the response.
@@bmahar anytime!
I haven't had luck with chicory I'm up in Northern Minnesota. Maybe i might have to try a different variety.
I always do it in a blend just to make sure there's always something attractive in the plot for the deer
Nice of the deer to mow that stuff down so you can broadcast some more clover blends within!
Yes sir! I'll thicken it up this spring
I found once the snow starts covering the ground that Myrtle ground cover is one of the best things there is. The deer love it and it stays green right through the winter.
Interesting, thanks for sharing
Can you frost seed chicory into an established clover plot?
Yes sir
nice job
Thank you sir!
