You did amazingly to fix this, I found that the green and white wire were too delicate to strip easily without cutting through them. Red and black had thicker core wire.

I use a soldering iron to fix and repair game systems and video games. For example, gameboy games, you can remove and replace the battery from games that use battery as game saves. You can use a soldering iron as modding your gba. (Game boy advance. You can get a better amp for the speaker and solder it in. Very useful when u don't wanna do it a different and more difficult way. I really liked this video because it's cool to see someone else doing the same thing I do.

Nice video. I've used matches before to shrink the heat shrink tubing, but the best thing to use is a heat gun. I bought a dual temp one on Amazon to use when taking the bezel off of laptop screens when replacing them (I work on laptops all day at work), and it has come in very handy when I have needed to use it for other things like heat shrink tubing, and even removing a dash cam adhesive mount from my (dead) car's windshield to re-install on my wife's SUV's windshield, which is what I'm driving until we can get me another car. I have also used it to pop dents out of some things, like an aluminum water bottle. Heated up the area around the dent, and it eventually just popped out.

You can always take the bigger piece of heat shrink and slice it up the side, wrap it around the cable and heat as normal. It should still do the same job.

Speedy - normally you use some solder flux to dip the wires in and then tin the ends and then you solder them together without twisting. I use a solder flux pen for this kind of work since it is clean and simple to apply. The bad thing with the wire you are using is that fiber that is in with the wire and a little flux will help that solder flow in spite of the fiber in the wire. The other thing is the shielding that you cut off is another thing to actually try to reconnect since it does shield the signal wires from RF and also adds some strength to the wire to protect those all important connections (you could even have just pulled the shield wire apart and kept it frayed to then be the last thing to reconnect between the two cut pieces and keep the value of the shielding along with that structural integrity to the wire). Also, on the white electrical tape comments - I don't recall seeing that, but I have seen white shrink wrap tubing so that might be something to consider if you ever revisit this repair.
I did like your using individual shrink for each wire and a bonus would be to have a larger shrink tube to go over the main wire to add strain relief to insure long life for the connection which you discovered after soldering the signal wires - You are correct on using electrical tape in this circumstance since it is a pain in the rump to get off if you need to re-solder. I'm a ham radio operator and do a lot of this kind of thing day in and out here on my radios and quadcopters I fly. Not lecturing but giving you some ideas for the future so you get a tip or two to take a cool idea and make it that much longer lasting repair ;>) Bottom line - you did good and made the thing work so high 5 dude! - 73 de KK6IQK (ham speak for Best Regards from KK6IQK ;>) )

In the UK we do have white electrical tape, don't know about US.
As someone else said I would have "tinned" the ends of the wire before joining together.
Heat shrinks they also do in different colours so once completed you could have used a large heat shrink in white.
As well as hardware stores people can find everything on sites such as Amazon and E-bay.

Adrian Delarosa OMG same I love cleaning things. Lemme tell you an awesome story. So my friend at school went up to me and gave me a copy of Pokemon gold. I was shocked. So I went home and popped it in my gameboy and noticed... IT DIDNT WORK. No wonder he gave it to me. Me texted me saying if I can fix it, you can have it. So I unscrewed the back screw and noticed a lot of crumbs and sticky stuff building up in the circuit board. So I cleaned it And it looked nice. I popped it in, and it WORKED!! But one problem... It didn't save. So I reopened it and since the saves are on a battery, the battery must be dead. So I soldered a new battery, and it could save. That's the story when my cleaning skills got me a free game.
