    The sub-$100 case market is starting to populate with quality airflow-oriented cases (after years of us pushing), and the Corsair 4000D Airflow is another to join those ranks. It'll be competing most directly with the Lian Li Lancool 215, Cooler Master TD500, Phanteks P400A, be quiet! Pure Base 500DX, and similar airflow cases. The new Corsair 4000D non-Airflow is also in for review, but unsurprisingly, it's not much of a performer. The 4000X is in for review at another time, assuming there's interest, but we're starting with both the 4000D and 4000D Airflow in this one. Some of the best cases for gaming PC builds right now are in this price class, so it's a good time for the case market.

    Why do case manufacturers even send steve closed front panel cases? The conclusion will always be "buy the mesh front panel version" anyway.

    • @kangjohan78
      @kangjohan78 3 ปีที่แล้ว +127

      It's of course for the exposure to the general audience. While most are performance-oriented, there will be some that are appearance-oriented. They will be the ones that will buy the front closed panel ones because they looked nice.

    • @KCVitamins
      @KCVitamins 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Well I would imagine that they want to sell products. In this case for example when it is a family of same chassis it is nice to see how much you lose on temps with the filled front option. 10c doesn't sound like the end of the world if you want the looks and aren't running a monster setup anyway for very high heat output. That being said I also sit in the functionality over form camp on computers personally.

    • @spicemint80
      @spicemint80 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      because there is a part of the market that doesnt focus so much on airflow and instead wants better acoustics and normally closed panel cases are beetter with them than the ones that are more for airflow.

      Since i have external watercooling and only need minimal airflow (powerstage, chipset)
      in the case i still like a non mesh non dust collecting,
      almost completely closed case.
      Without any rgb, glass windows or progameredgy showoff design taking up more space.
      Also reduces coilwhine noise getting out.

    • @phenomanII
      @phenomanII 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PsiQ This. I am in the process of building a custom loop with an external radiator (mounted to the side of the case for easier relocation) and I am planning to seal the case as much as I can to block all high frequency noise, cooling the air inside with a 360mm radiator. (There are tons of threads online saying this won't work but noone in those threads has personal experience, while I have read about 2 systems so far that utilise this system and work flawlessly.)
      I am glad that these reviews resulted in a wide variety of affordable cases that I can recommend to others, but it sure as hell made it difficult to find a case that is as closed off as possible (I would make a custom one, but I suck at fabrication).
      In the end, I bought a rackmount case from 2004 with almost no holes, which I plan to block with acoustic foam. It looks very outdated, but it is made from thick steel (which is something I wish Steve focused on a bit more, 0.8mm SECC is just not enough with all of the cutouts modern cases have) and it has surprisingly pleasing aesthetics - very industrial looking.

    • @PsiQ
      @PsiQ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phenomanII
      Cooling the Air inside with the rad (meaning no airflow in/out will make the heat transfer with a rad (even 360) really hard, because you wont have a high enough dT for the rad to really work. The cpu/gpu usually have tenmps around 50 to 60°C, ambient room is about 22 to 26°C leaving the water temps in the middle. If you use air to water to air even if its already really hot inside there is not much dT for physics to work which means really high volume airflow needed..
      I guess having a blank metal casewall and blowing the air against that would work better than foam isolating. If there is no hole, sound will transfer only by vibration.
      I always used the psu fan, which with external cpu/gpu doesnt have much heat to move along. Also 750w platinum for efficiency.
      Then adding one fan behind the normal cpu cooler with a shroud to blow on the area around the cpu/ram.
      Having the psu + back fan on the back + low part behind a table stops noise. You could add a sound trap/labyrinth with some overlapping boards.

    • @phenomanII
      @phenomanII 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PsiQ I was planning something like that before I heard about the systems using an internal radiator that show that it does indeed work. Making a sound trap would require fabrication which wouldn't be that easy and would make the case a lot bigger and as I said, I want the PC to be easy to relocate.
      I know that the dT isn't great for the efficiency of the internal rad, but one of the systems I read about was in a custom sealed cabinet and the owner even used an aircooled GPU for a long time with no issues.
      My system will use waterblocks to cool the CPU and GPU so the internal case temperature will only affect SMD components, the PSU and SSDs - no HDD in the PC (they are noisy after all).
      I know that the internal case temperature would slowly rise due to these components, but the hotter it gets inside, the more efficient the internal rad gets.
      The other system that shows off this kind of setup is quite high-end, and the internal temperature under load ended up reaching 10°C above ambient. Even if it reaches 20°C somehow in my much less power hungry machine, that is still better than a lot of cases from a few years ago focused on silence/looks. And while the PCs in those do run hot, they work just fine.

    I'm not crazy about christmas tree cases. A little RGB is nice on a motherboard, but what I find most appealing is a simple and clean aesthetic for the case itself. I really like this case (the airflow) and it performs well. That cable management around the HDD cage was the only notable hassle I ran into during my build. The depth is nice too for your taller air coolers (noctua d-15 has plenty of headroom).

    I kinda fell in love with the look of the 4000D Airflow, and really enjoy mine. I was able to fit an NZXT X63 in the front with tubes down, and an EVGA P2 1000w with the drive cage installed. Absolutely loved the mounting stud for the motherboard. Tiny bit of metal, but it made a substantial difference to ease of installation. Between features, aesthetics, and price it's solid. Not perfect(a couple more front panel USB ports would be nice), but it's a good case that deserves its popularity.

    I absolutely loved the 275R Airflow (Decent airflow but I was head over heels for the looks) so I was ECSTATIC when I heard about this case. I meant to wait for Steve's review...but I'm currently watching this with my 4000D Airflow to the right of me ;p I could not be happier with my purchase!!! It looks absolutely incredible, it was a dream to build in, and their included cable management eliminated any excuses to skimp on my own cable management. The two included fans are solid, not perfect, but solid. I'm using them as top mounted exhaust fans at the moment and will likely upgrade to match my noctua's in the future. They give off a quiet "whooshing" sound, but are by no means silent. This case isn't perfect, but it fit my color scheme and aesthetic wonderfully! I would highly recommend it if you're looking for a good balance between form and factor on a budget.

    I had the older Corsair Obsidian 350D when it cam out. While there were some negatives, there were two things that stuck out: 1) the front filter was extremely easy to access and clean compared to many other cases. My environment is dusty, so this is important. Simply gently push on the front and it pivoted back for removal to access the filter. 2) Corsair carries a lot of replacements parts (and occasionally an upgrade). I broke a piece and found it in their store. I also found an airflow front panel to replace the solid front, increasing the airflow plus I was able to see the filter behind it and know when it was time to clean. So the 4000 Airflow is tempting from that standpoint. I do hate to see that they reduced the USB 3.0-A sockets to 1 though glad to see the USB-C socket. Overall, a nice case, and I generally upgrade the fans anyway.

    I chose this case for my first PC build in large part because of this review. I really like it.

    My brother just rebuilt my system in this today ($155 NZD black), i got the airflow one. I feel much better after this review! I used to have a case that was over 10 years old.

    Gamers Nexus should make a video on GPU sag. and how bad it actually is, everyone throws all kinds of things into the pc, conductive or not to mitigate sag. I would love to see a total breakdown on what series cards sag the worst, what sags the least over time, and if braces are actually justified.

    can't believe that these launched at $80, and 2 years later, they are selling for $110. oh, how the market has changed.

      @@vincentprice713 So I am using it now. My vote? Great quality case but it is cheap. Also mine had fans that came with it so hence why price is up. When I say cheap it feels pricy but it is too small for a 4080 or greater GPU and it has just one usb port that is not type c. Also no motherboard LED IO lights as that is missing. It is a cute or gorgeous case that is metal and stylish but is missing some options. Also it does get hot and you need to remvoe the glass. Steve is right about that.

    Use this case for a productivity/ office/ 1080p gaming system. First, I installed five Noctua NF-A12 fans to achieve adequate airflow. Everything in the chromax design, of course. The size of the case is chosen deliberately; for a high-performance system I would use a large tower.

    A good alternative to this is a iCue 220T which has an airflow variant, is slightly smaller, and comes with 3 Corsair SP120 fans. I had the same problem that Steve had with the front for an AIO, but I managed to get an Arctic Liquid Freezer 280mm in there after removing the hard drive bay, putting the bottom in first, allowing clearance for the top of the radiator past the front panel PCB, and then screwing the radiator in before replacing the hard drive tray. All in all, the fans are decent, are fairly quiet once temps are configured in bios, and it looks sharp especially if you use white as the base colour for the RGB.

    Maybe reviews only take the ideal use into consideration.
    One thing the corsair mesh has over the others is that is is not metal. Metal will oxidate, rust, whatever your case even outside of extreme situations.
    It is also a dust magnet and you can't clean as easily.

    8:11 We have no patience for case designs that use tiny, hidden pathways to admit trickles of air when it's clearly just as easy, if not easier, to work in better airflow even without sacrificing close-off looks.
    Finally someone said it. I'm sick of case manufacturers charging $100 for an "upgraded" version of the case which simply has a mesh front panel or an extra USB port on the front I/O or some other basic feature which can and should be included in the base version.
