Yea this is by far the most ridiculous lock pick mechanic in video game history, they need to patch this shit. I've only been able to open 3 locks in the whole game. I'm not even going to bother with that system anymore.

Lockpicking in Starfield has made me exit the game multiple times with pure frustration, why they couldn't keep the old system I'll never know. If it aint broken don't fix it comes to mind.

I don't think you'd do well with your standard pattern IQ test. It really isn't a difficult mechanic there is however an element of logic required to it.
I recommend figureing out the bottom layers first. It makes a BIG difference to the higher level locks. Plus the pins will stay in that position when you finally need it. The worst.thing is the higher level locks will add in dummy pins that are useless. It makes it a very frustrating process.
Imagine designing a lock picking system so poorly, that the vast majority of players are going to immediately mod it out of the game; the very second mod support goes live across consoles. I've never seen a more infuriating and overall confusing locking system in any other video game that I've played. Moral of the story: If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it Bethesda.

This advice absolutely doesn’t work for higher difficulty locks - you can easily use pins in the first layer that you actually need in layers 2+. You need to work out every layer before you start on the first. It’s a real pain
I'm lvl 4 and got an assassin's grendel out of a master locked gun case on the wall and didn't even have to pick it. The gun's stock was sticking out of the case and it just let me grab it.
For the first three picks, I could just use the keys in the order from left to right that they were presented. It was incredibly confusing when I got into the fourth one where I had to actually use the keys in different order: "Hang on, the first two keys have 6 dimples but the lock only has 5 holes?" :D
I've used 20 picks on my first novice lock, can't get my head round this. I would just leave it and move on,but it's part of the mission, so im now locked out (pun intended) of the game.
I have picked over 40 locks up to expert& only failed 4 or 5. It took a few times to get it. I also like the fact that if you save & try to reload so save your digipins the lock combination changes! Note: You do not need to rush lock picking in Starfield since during lock picking the game is basically paused.
I've come across some locks that you literally couldn't pick because none of the keys fit the outside layer, this entire system is bullshit and honestly is making me want to stop playing because of how often it comes into play to get through certain quests.
On PC there is already a mod that removes that lockpicking minigame it's called Easy lockpicking so if your on PC i suggest adding that to your mod list.

Advanced locks give you decoys on the right hand side, always do the inside layer first, when you have figured that out save those ones and solve the outside, buy digi picks from trade services (I forget their name)
You can actually bank all keys before slotting a single one. This can be used to avoid using any keys until you've confirmed all the needed keys. Expert and master locks can be tedius but it is the easiest way to avoid using the undo option...kinda bad in that regard though because I had 150+ picks and would end up getting more picks than locks to pick doing it this way... This also made it kinda fun for novice and advanced locks however as slotting the keys became a pseudo rhythm minigame.

The question is: do you really need to crack the expert and master locks? Is there super OP gear behind these doors? Is it neccessary to pick expert and master locks to get special outcomes on quests? If the expert and master locks don't gatekeep things that are absolutely neccessary, then there is no reason to waste so much time and energy on these locks.
Are there any areas where there is a abundance of locks to pick? Cause I got advanced security, but I still need to pick 3 locks to get expert...which the freaking galaxy is FULL of expert locks 😒

Yes it's a blast! They can be a bit overwhelming cuz I definitely do not hold your hand in this game. I would suggest doing the opposite of what most people do in Bethesda games and jet 45 main missions out of the way right away. Because if you just go free roaming and trying to do things you may find yourself lost trying to do certain things. But also talked to damn near everybody as long as it doesn't say citizen. Some of the things that you think are miscellaneous fetch quest will actually turn into multiple missions taking you to different planets. My only beef is the inventory system andmaps for this game are not great. But I guess it's probably pretty hard to map out an entire solar systems. 🤷

Oh it's fine with THESE kind of locks, but when you get the ability to even TRY the harder ones, there's still no guarantee the time you spend won't be wasted on something that simply cannot be opened. Needlessly difficult.

did a novice lock, got to the last layer, it had one gap in it. none of my options the whole time had only 1 pin. 0/10 for this lockpicking mechanic
