    Everybody have fun tonight. Everybody wing sung tonight.

    I have been a fan of the Wing Sung pens for a while now and the 3008 is my favorite. I didn't have any issue with how wet or dry the pen I have writes, it works very well for me. One thing I did have to address was with the trim ring at the front of the grip. I was getting ink on my fingers when using the pen and first thought it had a crack of some kind. Thankfully someone on facebook had experienced the same thing and shared the fix: that trim ring is just threaded on and they suggested packing the threads on the grip with some silicone grease then screwing the ring down firmly. Problem solved.
    The other reason I quite like the 3008 is the nib. Or, the ability to change the nib for something broader. I like LAMY nibs better than I like their pens--for me, the LAMY pens I've tried all wrote well but were uncomfortable--so the 3008 lets me have the benefit of LAMY nibs with very little expense. And that also means I can fix the big downside, for me, of almost all the Chinese pens: the nibs are too fine for me most of the time.
    Great review as usual, thank you!

      Weird. As a Chinese myself I find even the EF nibs too thick for my liking. Faber-Castell Ambition for the win!

    • @echt114

      Where in my house would I find the "silicone grease" to fix this?

    • @robbiemer8178
      @robbiemer8178 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@echt114 that's not really a question I can answer for you--never been in your house, after all.
      But, I used the silicone grease sold for pens. Bought mine from Goulet but they aren't shipping right now. Anderson Pens has it and I'm sure more places do as well. Can't post a link but andersonpensDOTcomSLASHpure-silicone-grease-10ml-jar/ (change capital letters for the symbols) is one place to find some.
      Good luck!

    • @echt114
      @echt114 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I was mostly just expressing a little frustration because it always seems that recommended fixes are things I don't have or that would introduce more complication than replacement. I don't have a pen collection or accessories, so I'd consider trying something like a cheap Wing Sung. But a leaking pen is kind of a deal breaker. Then again, I've read complaints that twsbi's crack. There are only a few pen designs I like visually (hate the cigar shape) but these are acceptable.

    • @robbiemer8178
      @robbiemer8178 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@echt114 yeah, things can, sometimes , get a bit fiddly. There are lots of Wing Sung designs that do not have that trim ring and you might find another design you like. I also have several TWSBI pens and the cracking issue is real but tends to be a bit overstated on line. The ECO and ECO-T are reputed to have no cracking issues because either a different design or a different plastic. Whichever it is, I have not had any problems with leaking or cracks in the ECO pens I have. I have ordered a Mini AL but haven't got it yet. That one is to replace the first Mini I bought from TWSBI that has had some cracks develop on the cap. Again, I've been reading that current ones have slightly changed the plastic and shouldn't have problems.
      I have also noticed that the Wing Sung pens are a bit more money now than they were two years ago. I think they are still a good value and , in fact, I just last week bought another 601A model. It cost about twice what I paid for one in '18 and have the added "bonus" of taking who knows how long to arrive but I'm content to wait.

    I swapped the nib with a LAMY M nib and has transformed this 3008 into a completely different pen, for the better of course.
    Thanks Stephen for putting this fountain in the "limelight" :-)

    I am quite sure that Chinese engineers are already introducing some improvements according to your very insightful review. The progress that has been made in Chinese fountain pen industry in last 2 years is very rapid.

    When you have turned the piston knob all the way to fill the pen you can turn it a bit more and it will click with a bit of resistance. The piston knob is now very unlikely to turn accidentally now. To refill the pen turn the piston knob and you will again encounter some resistance then it will click again and after that freely turn and move the piston forwards.

    • @dtaggartofRTD
      @dtaggartofRTD 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      unfortunately not all of them do. some of them have a smooth piston rod without the locking nubs that secure it into the upper position. It can be a bit of a deal breaker on an otherwise surprisingly good pen.

      Mine clicks and, as you say, it feels safe. It looks very unlikely that, once it has clicked "up" when filled, it will click "down" and turn things into a mess! :-)

    The “metal bit” on the filling system is actually plastic with a metallic paint.

  • @reasonnottheneed

    It's interesting that you found them dry, whereas I found them too wet. I think it's just because you write quite large (as if treating the pen as a broad) but I write quite tiny (treating the pen as an xf).
    I have 4 of them. At first I tried to make them a bit drier to fit my writing style, but that caused skipping issues. Eventually, I tried grinding them down to xf, and that worked out much better for me.
    By the way, you can get the f and xf nibs to fit these for these for about $1 (usd) for 5 nibs on aliexpress.

    Just bought a pack of 4 from Amazon for £7 (about 3 Canadian dollars each!). Of the two that i've tried both nibs are marked as extra fine but write like light medium. Really not bad flow at all. Very impressed.

  • @cslop01
    @cslop01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    FYI I bought a four pack of these and they all write fine with very little pressure. I've even swapped out one with a Lamy F nib. GREAT REVIEW

  • @kh23797
    @kh23797 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My 3008 arrived 10 Dec19. Any skipping issues seem to have been eradicated since Stephen's review-it wrote smoothly without tuning. It's 'pull-apart-able' so I checked all thread tightnesses before filling. A paltry £3.68 on eBay UK (inc. postage), it arrived swiftly. British stock, perhaps? It was totally serviceable upon receipt and a pleasure to use. I can say the same for all the Chinese pens I've bought recently so maybe I'm just lucky... or their quality control is improving fast.

  • @davidanderson3425

    My 3008 doesn't write anything like the one in this video. Mine is not dry, nor does it skip. The only complaint I have is the piston filling knob has some free play and feels a bit loose on my sample. In terms of writing I would suggest mine is on the medium/fine borderline. I have the earlier version i.e. non-locking piston knob.

    Thanks for the review. I have the 698 (Eco tribute) and 601 (Parker 51 tribute) and both are great pens. The nibs on both are excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

    I find the EF/F nibs are a bit dry with thicker & shimmer inks, but I've bought 8 and they are my shimmer ink workhorses once the nibs have been switched for Lamy stubs. The EF nib is still good for other inks - I use one regularly with Platinum Carbon Ink for waterproof sketching. Love the capacity. Love the ease of disassembly and (consequently) cleaning.

    I have a few of these pens. Nice pens. I know people might think I'm nuts, but I actually like these better than the TWSBI pens i have. (Eco and 580) My 3008's are very wet and the LAMY nib options are cool. My TWSBIs sit empty in my drawer now. My 3008s remain inked up.
    Thanks for the review.

    I frequently give these as gifts. I have found the flow through the nib to be inconsistent from one to the next, so I usually take 15 seconds to adjust the flow before giving them away.
    So far they've been a big hit.

    I have 4 of these in the gold trim in each of the colors. Fun pens! And they do write very well.
    Also lovely pens to give away to fountain pen virgins. Good gateway pen!
    Thank you for the review.

    I have one of these and liked it so much that I bought a 4-pen set of the 3008A, which apparently sorts out some issues with the original. I love the piston filler and only discovered one neat thing today. I'm sure you already know, but once you have drawn the piston all the way up, you can push the rotating top in slightly and turn a little more until you feel a click. This latches it in place apparently and helps protect against you turning it by mistake or shaking it loose, actuating the piston and pushing out an ink spill. I don't have the "real thing" pen of which this is a clone, so I don't know if that has the same feature. As this is my first piston filler, I also don't know if they all do that, but I definitely like that feature.

    After watching your review, i bought a couple. The piston has a locking click. So maybe they have redesigned the mechanism. For the price, i must say these are the best pens I have got. Writes flawlessly. Huge reservoir of ink and elegant in appearance with the metallic paint at the rear section.

    These pens are indeed still available on Amazon, however the brand name has been rendered as Yongsheng. The Chinese characters remain the same, the difference is in Cantonese vs Mandarin pronunciation and anglicization.

    These Wing Sung pens being not as carefully machined as Lamy pens, I have noticed in some of them it is really hard to change the nib, or put a Lamy nib on. So depending upon what you get a lamy nib may or may not fit.

  • @susanbradford4543

    I bought four of these last year, two I gave to friends and I kept two. I use them for sketching so they often sit for a month without being used. I have found if I twist the piston just a little they are ready to go again. This is best done over a paper towel in case a drop or two of ink comes out.

    Thanks Stephen for the review I actually have 5, and 4 of them were absolutely perfect and wrote wet and 1 needed a bit of a tune. I guess that's quality control. I was a newbie when I bought them and didn't realize they were knock offs until now. But I must say I am super impressed with mine however I completely understand others opinions on knock offs

    I have 4 of this pens and they are perfect for work. Mine are not dry and they are smooht writers. You should try the Penbbs pens. They are beautyful pens and have converter and piston fillers. As far as i know they will come out draw fillers like Edison pens and vac fillers like Twsbi vac 700.

    First time I've had the pen to hand as I watched it.
    My nib seems to be a little better than yours (no skipping), and my smaller hands have not had a problem with the piston (perhaps both are QC problems).
    I'm impressed with your line variation though - I have not been able to get any.
    Fascinating to be able to compare my experiences with yours!

  • @Aquaria
    @Aquaria 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    My only problem with the 3008 was that my particular model had a leaking issue at the metal ring above the feed if I put too much pressure on the grip--and I'm not a death grip writer. Sometimes it would leak onto my fingers if they slid down far enough. Sometimes it leaked onto the paper.
    It was the 3rd Wing Sung in a row that gave me problems of some kind. Another Wing Sung had the tines too close together so it skipped badly. I thought about fixing it, but then I thought...why? It's a cheap pen, so who cares? The other Wing Sung had a leaking problem as well, but from the feed itself.
    That indicated to me a QC problem, so I haven't bought another Wing Sung pen since. Jinhao seems to have better quality control, so they're my go-to cheap pen now.

  • @billinrio
    @billinrio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for your review, which doesn't reflect my writing experience with this pen. Out of the box, with the F nib, mine is a quite wet writer. The feed supplies plenty of ink, even with fast writing. Used posted (something you usuallly mention, but here you did not) it's quite long and feels unbalanced to me.

    These are crazy pens. I thought mine had a scratchy nib, pressed too hard... Sprung it. Oh dear. Bent it back into shape. Something very strange happened. A dramatic transformation occurred... Now it's the wettest, smoothest fine nib I own. Right. The nibs are very very soft, gold like. They bend super easy but the can easily be bent back into place.. remarkable...

    16 months later on from this review, the 3008 can be easily and cheaply purchased on eBay. A clear version has cost me A$4.98 and a coloured version A$2.25. Also I was able to purchase 5 nibs for approximately A$2.42, just in case I get a scratchy nib. Admittedly they are .38s but I am partial to fine and extra fine nibs. I have also purchased the latest 3013 pen for A$5.99 Reviews over all are good for both these pens, especially considering the price. I like the fact that I am able to colour match my pens to my favourite ink colours.

    I have one and enjoy it. I like the faceted section and the clear cap. Mine has not dried due to no inner cap. Does anyone know if the colored section under the piston is actually metal? Mr. Brown says it is, but I'm skeptical. I've never pulled the piston to check.

    It's really not a bad pen. I carry one clipped to my shirt when working in conditions where I am worried about loosing or breaking a nice pen. The 2 that I own did write out of the box but required a little nib work to get them to where I like it. The newer version has a click locking the piston.
