    My favourite pen. I love how smoothly it writes, the large capacity of the reservoir and the weight of it in my hand.

    I have 2 Wing Sung 3008 pens that I swapped to Lamy nibs.
    One 1.1 and the other with a 1.5
    I like writing with them both.
    The screws inside the caps are both rusty and the clear plastic is very discolored. I had two more with fine and extra fine nibs which I gave away. They wrote well, I just don't like fine nibs.
    They had the same rust on the cap screws.
    They should use stainless steel screws in the cap and the pens would be near perfect.

      I agree. Use a screw that doesn't rust. My 3008 with Lamy 1.1 writes great.

    Thanks sir, got one now. It's an extremely useful pen for campus activities, I'm amazed. Been using it to travel many times too. There's no issue regarding the piston filling system or any leakage. I'm paying something cheap for tons of fun, I'm obviously satisfied with the money I used for a good functional pen. I don't have to waste 30$ for TWSBI pens for a workhorse pen considering the money I should use for other primary needs in campus. I'm satisfied with something cheap and useful. Keep making good review videos sir, your reviews are pretty detail compared to many other reviewers.

    Yes the Chinese charactors do stand for Wing Sung and when pronounced in Chinese is "yourng sern" which translates to: "immortal life". Quite a dramatic name for a pen company, very much in line with the Hero pen company. Fine by me as long as they make good quailty pens.

    Just purchased 2 of this Wing Sung 3008, one for myself and the other to be a gift to an old friend that last used a fountain pen when he was in school back in the 70s. Attempting to get him back to use the ultimate writing instrument. BTW since posting your video, there are now several sellers that give buyers option of selecting colour combination of external clip to internal barrel. Example: Gold-Green, Gold-Blue, Silver-Silver, Silver-Purple....so on and so on, total of 8 different colour combinations, wonderful I reckon :-)

      Just received the 2 x Wing Sung 3008 pens today. Inked one in a new ink - Robert Oster "Khakhi". It writes just like you said in your video clip. Noticed that the price has come down since you and I bought ours. It now cost under AUS$4 free freight. The sellers have put in their notes that you can leave them a message about your preferred color, if not they will send by random.

    The piston mechanism does come off. The silver ring under the turning knob is threaded on to the barrel. Turn the piston about half way down the barrel and grip the silver band and unscrew,..pretty simple. These pens are fantastic! What I love about these over the TWSBI is that the feed/grip section is clear and you can see the ink through it so it has a much nicer look.

    Thanks for the video, Chris. I just received mine. Very nice pen design, and about half the price of the WS 698. I really like the striated barrel feel. I don't like the blind cap. Locks differently from the WS 698 - this has a detent when you complete a fill. Even when locked, the blind cap still has some play. The 3008 also does not have the inner cap, so worried about nib drying. Worried that when securing the cap too tightly to avoid drying that the barrel will crack. That said, I love that you get a clear look at the nib when the pen is capped. Also, briefly tried with a Lamy nib (1.1mm stub) and works well. Very wet pen.

    It's a damn shame that these $15 Chinese pens, some even $5, $2, or $2 pens write and write well out of the box when Visconti pens that cost $700 to $1000+ write poorly or don't write at all.

I really only wanted to be able to ensure I had my favourite colours ready to go in a pen. I have a fetish of always having my black Noodler's Feather loaded for writing cheques but I love my turquoise, fushia, purple and a couple of other playful inks, loaded for fun use in my journal. Now I am really looking forward to getting this along with my Wing Sung 3013.

      Bull. You've never even owned a Visconti. I've owned a dozen, and used another twenty or more, and every one of them wrote perfectly right out of the box.

      @@jamesaritchie1 lol that's funny because all my Visconti's have been crap. So to diagraph. This pen however, I've had for years, use almost everyday and haven't had problem one out off it. If memory serves I paid $1.97 for them with free shipping.
      BTW, Chinese pens aren't junk. When a manufacturer agrees to make products in China, in exchange for cheap labor they surrender all R&D to the Chinese. Any open manufacture who has ever manufactures in China has surrendered their molds, schematics, martials, etc etc etc. They aren't even knock-offs. They are there very exact same pen. There is no difference in a Parker pen manufactured in China and a wing sung, Jinhao, no name, etc.

    You are owning these reviews on these new Wing Sungs. I like the idea of this one because nibs can be altered.
    Does the piston knob feel secure? I read on the FPN that it there were concerns about the knob not being locked in place or possibly easy to turn in the pocket.
    How would you rate this relative to the Wing sungs 618 and 698? Which one do you feel is the sturdiest? Are there any other pens like this I am late to discover as well? lol
    Sorry to ask so many questions but there isn't that much on the FPN about these.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All of these 3 pens are sturdy. None have blind caps that turn easily. None are pocket pens in my view. Suggest a pocket pen like the Lecai. I believe in using a tool as it was designed. Interesting the focus on locked knobs. Do Pelikans or Montblancs have locks.?

    • @rlv05001
      @rlv05001 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think so. I have a Pilot CH 92 (bad nib that needs work, and I dislike the balance of the heavy piston at the end of the barrel) that isn't even locked and neither is my TWSBI Eco (not very comfortable for longer writing sessions). My only concern was if the nob wiggled around loose, which might bring out my OCD side. I did end up ordering the 618 and 698 and I'll see if they will suffice, but to be able to get some dependable sturdy writers for this price may be hard to turn down (and even have to convert others to our addiction). I mean if the Lamy Safari or the Pilot MetroP and the other starter pens had a sections I preferred I'd use them every day. These wing sungs have a section I prefer and am considering using them as every-day-pens, especially if they have that same sturdy feel like the Lamy Safari or Pilot MetroP. I definitely want to give them a try, but as you can imagine it would be a bit of a surprise to have a $4.00 pen feel as sturdy as a Lamy Safari or Pilot MetroP or even a TWSBI 580. I'm not saying they're not, and maybe I am in for some WOW's myself : ). To me even my Pilot Prera has a cheaper feel than the Lamy Safary and Pilot MetroP, so it wouldn't be outlandish.
      The focus on the knob was of interest in one of the FPN 3008 threads, which is why I ask. I mean, I'm listening and not just arguing as is evinced by my purchase of the 618. These Wow's have my attention and others' as well.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Each of us have personal preferences. With all the variety, it is great that we can find one we like. To me, I do not consider the Safari or Metro to feel sturdy. A 580 is sturdier. A lot is related to weight & balance.

    • @rlv05001
      @rlv05001 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loved the pen. Nib was smooth. My only gripe was sometimes the feed would deplete and i would have to prime. But that's easy with this pen. and sometimes it would start funny pending the angle of initiation, but that's just the xf nib I had. But!!! cleaning out inks on all the old pens I saw the feed of lamy safari was identical and almost so. Fit in perfectly. Now it has a lamy feed and lamy nib and I donno?, we'll see.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I've had the drying issue with some, not all, I think with some issues it's the ink. It is easy to reprime the feed with the piston. Let us know how the Lamy feed & feed work out.

    • @hdchenhdchen8282
      @hdchenhdchen8282 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So Chris. I noticed, and love by the way, the Lamy Safari feed, through the part where it sits, is full just all the time. I'm wondering if the 3008 feed taken out and micro sanded just a teeny hair, because I believe it was tighter to pull out and relatively easy to slide the Lamy feed in, it might do the trick to temper the reduction in flow. Maybe a taper with the wider end toward the nib so it sits tight still?

      Increase width of feed channel. I've had some success with this approach.

    I bought a Wing Sung 698 after watching your review. I saw this review and bought a Wing Sung 3008. In both cases I had low expectations because my past experience of Chinese pens has been a bit hit and miss. I have to say I'm very pleasantly surprised; both of these pens feel well made and write quite well. I can't say that one is better than the other although at roughly one quarter of the price of the 698 the 3008 is better value, plus if you want to you can fit a Lamy Safari nib the 3008. And now I ask myself a question - "My Onoto is a truly fabulous pen and will no doubt last my lifetime, but is it really 200 times better than the Wing Sung?" - emotion says "yes", logic says "I don't know".

    • @chrisrap52

      I reuse the "old" ink, flush with "new" ink. The small amount in the pen will be diluted with the bottle ink. I guess I could discard the "old" ink but there is an irrational frugal side of me that can't do that.

    When I order from China on eBay, I use Google Translate to write in Chinese and politely request a color choice instead of "random". I find that often, just because you took the time to write in Chinese and it's familiar, they will honor your color request.

    The pricing for a 4 pack is under $3.50 a pen. i can't do anything with the gold trim version whatsoever. chrisrap52: Would you say this is as good or better than a Wing Sung 698? Also, How is the cleaning on the transparent feeds? Noodler's Black leaves that tinge on the feed no matter what i do. Is it just a case of picking non bulletproof inks in there?

    Does the ink make a difference in the line width?

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Ink flow = line width. More lubricated, greater flow, wider line.

    • @freetobe3
      @freetobe3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      chrisrap52 what ink would you recommend for fine or extra fine nibs that doesn't make a medium or broad line?
      My diamine majestic blue is hella wet, thickens the line and almost goes through the paper on every pen tested to varying degree.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't have a recommendation. Not something I have done. I have not noticed line spread as you do. Paper quality also a big factor. Don't use much Diamine so no reference there. I've heard that Noodler's X-Feather resists feathering that should be a trait to minimize line width.

    I plan to get one of this. I got a Lanbitou 3059 which is also a piston filler. But the Fine nib ones burps every now and then. So I am wondering does this Wing Sung 3008 burps or gushes when the ink level gets low?

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Burping may not be just due to the pen. Generally burping is from air pressure pushing ink out. Common when pens on a plane, lower pressure outside, higher inside, ink pushed our. One reason to store pens nib up. Heat can also cause higher pressure inside pen, maybe heat from your hand. Some pens like eye droppers & piston fill are more prone as ink & air is in contact with wall of barrel. Less ink means more air, air expands more so when ink low, more prone to burp. So far I have not seem my 3008 burp. But is is still full of ink.

      I just ordered a replacement. I noticed that some of them now have a recurve plastic section and do not have the small, threaded metal ring. The clips are also different. I ordered one of those for comparison. Thanks for the reply.

  • @incognitonone2391

    The piston on the WS 698 seems to be better quality when compared to 3008 (rings seem to be thicker). The piston in my 3008 "leaks" and the ink manages to find its way past the rubber head up above. Is it possible to swap the piston from the WS698 to the 3008? I have a nice Lamy nib in it and is writing wet and smooth.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My guess would be pistons not swappable. Have you greased the piston? If found that may help.

    • @incognitonone2391
      @incognitonone2391 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another issue with the WS 3008 is the lack of the inner cap. Because of this, the screw head fixing the clip inside the plastic cap is quite often exposed to ink drops forming from the tip of the nib and the screw will start rusting fast. On the other hand the rust will contaminate the inside of the plastic cap. Either an inner lining cap or a stainless steel screw would be a simple fix. Perhaps in the next iteration of the 3008 model!

    Hello.... If you cap this pen and not use it for a few days, will it start right away? Or will it dry out and be hard to start?

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My experience after a few days, starts up OK. Depends on ink & conditions, dry & warm vs wet & cool. If you want a pen that does not dry out, look at a 618, hooded nib.

  • @Lchu01
    @Lchu01 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Seeing as this one doesn't have the same piston-lock mechanism as the 698 and 618, does it seems like the piston would be okay in a pocket or bag or would it have a chance or untwisting itself?

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't put in a pocket. It could turn. The velvet pouch could protect it from turning. There are many great pocket pens I would use.

    Save your money and buy the real thing. The 3008 is pure junk. It writes well for a while, then it starts falling apart, or just breaks. Even in China, you get what you pay for. You can get a good Jinhao, but you'll probably have to buy four to get one keeper.
    But at least the Jinhao is made from quality materials, and if you put a new nib, a high quality nib, on the one in four that's otherwise good, you have a sixty to eighty dollar pen for twenty-five bucks or so. And you may get lucky enough to get a Jinhao that already has an excellent steel nib.
    Wing Sung pens are all junk.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have many Wing Sungs (618 & 695) that I've used for years & are reliable writers & look new. I've had good & not to good Jinhaos. We are have are experiences. Hopefully we find pens that make us happy. Celebrate that.
