I do this too but instead of the white yarn for my "rip row" I use skinny 1/8 inch ribbon, it slides out smooth as butter when it's time and less risk of breakage or accidentally splitting it and having it try to be one with your project. I have a little baggie of perfect single row length pieces that I use over and over for rip rows.
