Hiking the Zion Subway: Zion's Hidden Gem

  • The Subway of Zion National.Park is one of the most unique and magical hikes in Zion. There are two ways to do this hike: bottom up and top down. While the top down route requires wet suits and rappelling gear, the bottom up route is accessible by those willing to enjoy plenty of miles of scrambling, river crossings and boulder hoppings. As this is a permitted hike, we had the trail mostly to ourselves and probably spent way too much time admiring. the colors and pools of the Subway, not to mention the spectacular Keyhole Falls and Archangel Falls!

    We did this incredible hike with our lovely niece in 2016. The day before, we did both Angels Landing and the Narrows all the way up to Orderville Canyon where I rolled my ankle. Woke up the next morning in lots of pain and almost bailed on this hike. Forever grateful that I didn’t! Guys, you both inspire two 65 year-olds to keep pushing the envelope. We’re no longer quite up to the challenges you put on yourselves but we can do some of this vicariously through you. And we both enjoy the immense love and respect you both show toward each other. Beautiful couple!

      Wow Patrick talk about inspiring -- hiking the Subway with a sprained ankle is freaking badass! Good for you, and very glad you got to see it even though it must have hurt like crazy going up and down the steep parts. Meanwhile, so happy you guys are enjoying the channel, and we promise to bring you lots more epic adventures for as long as our bodies hold up! ❤️

    Zion is a visual extravaganza. Epic views everywhere. Miss it, lived there, worked the AZ STRIP. Love the area. Running is a joy when in shape for it. I miss running more than anything. But walking ain't bad. I can live vicariously through you two running around the west. At first I was like don't do it, broke ankle, back woods. Now am like go go go.

    What an adventurous hike you guys! I can see why they call this a subway hike as it looks like one ☺️. Adam could have certainly stayed dry had he avoided walking on the wet rocks lol Elise had a good laugh haha. So watching this amazing video it looks like where you guys turned around was where you had to go waist deep in water if you chose to continue the hike? And of course this time of year the water is very cold. Do you know how much longer this hike would have been had you been able to go farther? Hope you guys come back and film the whole hike once the weather warms up.
    Have an amazing weekend Adam and Elise 🤗.

      Thanks guys! Yes you're right about where we turned around, and in fact it would have been more than waist deep in the water -- those pools were deep and we would have been swimming. From what we read, it is virtually impossible to get all the way up to the top coming from the bottom -- instead you have to start at the top and rappel down in a few places. But never fear, we already have rappelling equipment -- all we need are some wetsuits and we'll be ready to go back and do the whole thing from the top down! The tough part will be getting permits, but we will find a way!

    Elise and Adam, a hello from France. Your adventure in Zion is a superb hike with an extraordinary video rich in colors. In front of such landscapes accompanied by the sublime voice of Elise, it makes me dream, and with each video you give us a gift, I travel with you. I could not follow your Live, my English is too fair, but thanks to your philosophy it gave me the taste to improve. I hope Elise's back pain is gone, I would be happy to see you again in new adventures. Kisses from DAN.

    We scored permits back in Sept. We were warned "if it storms like it could... you'll be stranded for 1-2 days". The ranger leaned towards advising agianst the hike & said he cancelled his Narrows plans due to storm possibilities. Less than half of the 60 permits no-showed due to rain chances. We took the risk... and got halfway before thunder and dark skies moved in. We turned around. It never did rain 😥😥😥 Bonus: We passed a couple going in, on our way out. Against all odds, we ran into the same couple the next day, who proceeded to shove their phones/pictures in our faces & remind us on what we missed by turning around.😥 All in all, we did that pretty steep climb down/up without getting the payoff. Oh the sadness of the difficulty in obtaining permits, building a trip around those permits, heading out on the hike, only to turn around halfway.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      OMG Phil we had almost the same experience! When we drove in to pick up our permits the day before (after an 8-hour straight drive from LA), a ranger at the park entrance told us she thought the Subway was closed due to conditions. We were devastated, but decided to go ahead and check at the permit desk. It turned out that she was totally wrong and it was open, but we had a good 30 minutes of feeling your pain before we found that out! So sorry you guys missed seeing the Subway, but you probably did the right thing with those storm clouds. After having been up and back, we definitely saw places where one could become stranded by a gigantic flash flood, and that would NOT be fun. ❤️

    • @MrPhilGainer
      @MrPhilGainer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LiveHardxLoveHardMore stories from that trip... we also got kicked out the Narrows the very next day. Checked water levels on park website (all good) , scored shuttle #1 (driver treated it like a normal day), and were the first group of people in the water. 15 minutes in... massive/aggressive screaming behind us by a team of Search & Rescue. . Someone didn't return from the day before & they were going in to find them. We were heavily scolded for ignoring closure notices that didn't exist. Us, being the early birds we are (along with 20-30 other people), beat them putting up closure signs. They did find the guy, uninjured, and we completed the Narrows the following day.

    Great landscape! Adam, is this the first time I saw You freezing? btw. Where does the song in the end come from?

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha you are so right! I always bring layers to stay warm, and I had layers on this one too but didn't want to wear the outer layers in the Narrows because I thought I might slip and get them wet (which turned out to be true!). But as soon as we got out of the slippery parts, I was able to put the dry layers on and warmed right up. We make all of our own music for the channel, so all of the songs in this one are songs we've written and recorded in the last few months. The song at the end started with some piano chords that Elise's dad sent to us, and Elise came up with a beautiful melody to tie it together with the "All Leaves Fall" motif I had been toying with. Glad that you like it! ❤️ --A

    Done the Subway many times! If you get the chance again, you really should do top-down! It's a lot of fun. In the heat of summer you can do it without wetsuits, but some shivering will still occur. The scrambling over all those boulders is fun at first but gets old. Top-down has half the bolder scrambling and three rappels.

      Yes Teresa the whole Zion area is an incredible story of erosion, sedimentation, uplift, and more erosion. But the short version is that the Subway was shaped by millions of years of erosion caused by flash flooding through that channel. Such an amazing place!

We never felt it was too bad, though you may get your feet wet here and there. It seemed like the other people we passed were not regular climbers and they appeared to be doing just fine! Though there really aren't trail signs, you just follow the stream all the way up. If you do want to do this one make sure you apply for permits well in advance!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the rare tickets are a huge pain in the butt. We recommend our approach of just checking in pretty often to see if someone returned their tickets for whatever reason, and then being ready to rock and roll on short notice. It doesn't always work out -- we got tickets for Whitney Mountaineer's this way a few weeks ago, and then right before the trip a massive and unexpected and made climbing impossible that weekend. But when these things do come together, it makes all the effort worth it! ❤️

    My wife and I did this almost the same time of last year. Yeah water is still super cold in April and when we were at the subway tunnel the wind was high.
    It looks like you guys did much more scrambling than we did. Being not strong enough, we tried to nagivate to "trail" as much as we could to avoid scrambling, and for most of time you can always find a trail somewhere.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very cool you guys did it at around the same time of year! It must have been even colder for you if the wind was up 🥶. Yes you are right, it seemed like a lot of times there were trails leading up and away from the river rocks so people can often avoid the scrambling if they choose. We felt that the scrambling was more direct and therefore faster, so it allowed us to get up to the Subway area before anyone else was there and take our time filming. But even our scramble route wasn't too hard -- class 2 at most -- and so, so fun! ❤️

    The Subway is a classic semi-technical slot canyon hike in Zion National Park. The hike is somewhat like the famous Narrows, only exponentially more difficult. To complete the hike Adam & Elise must wade, scramble, slip & fall & climb up the Left Fork of North Creek. The stream is the trail, for the most part, getting lost is assured (a few well placed cairns might of helped?).
    Our two extreme athletes have been at it since early morning & you can see right away these two are experienced canyoneers. They have successfully climbed up waterfalls, cliffs and scrambled over boulders some the size of 2 story homes. The payoff are scenes straight out of a cinematographers dreams. The absorption of the story and the viewers experience. Beautiful, breathtaking, astonishing & dangerous are but some of the words to describe this magical landscape.
    Thank you Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Adam & Elise for preserving & showing us these National Parks.
    Why the Subway is so much colder?
    There’s areas of the Subway that do not receive much sunlight are more prone to ice buildup. The cold temperatures, shorter days, and ice buildup help to keep this area much cooler longer than others that are exposed to sunlight

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love it, Frans! So funny you said that about cinematographers' dreams, because we were thinking the same thing and then about 2/3 of the way up it turned into a cinematographer's nightmare when our main camera crashed! We were just getting to the most beautiful parts, and thought maybe we weren't going to be able to capture them. But then we did about 30 minutes of emergency maintenance and got it working again -- phew! ❤️

Once we got back down from the slippery part, though, we def put the jackets back on until we warmed up again! ❤️

    I would say it gets colder deep in the Subway at that one point you asked about, because it's quite a tight enclosed space, so it doesn't get much time in direct sunlight. The part of The Narrows that gets quite narrow gets cold as well partly for that reason. The wider open canyon areas would get more sun. Hey, the easy way to get down that slick rock with water flowing at 10:02 is to sit down and use it like a slide. Though as you were already cold, I can see why you didn't want to do it that way. You scored a great one with that lottery drawing. Great video. Thanks!

  • @Weathernerd27
    @Weathernerd27 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I study the weather as a hobby and while I don't have enough data to scientifically prove it I suspect the combination of cold water, no sunlight and wind shelter allows the canyon to be so cold. Canyons with high overhanging walls are almost like caves in the sense that sunlight never touches the bottom of the canyon and the walls restrict airflow. Caves are generally about the average annual temperature but cold water might lower the temperature by a few to several degrees. The cold water also sucks a surprising amount of heat out through you're feet so it might feel alittle colder than it really is. I experienced something similar when climbing Angels Flight in Zion several years ago, the trails switchbacks up this really narrow slot canyon and the slot canyon was at least 10 degrees colder. The temperature in the mountains is wierd I have been hiking at 10,000 feet where it feels hot, I check my thermometer and its only 70 degrees than a cloud blocks the sun and the wind comes up and it suddenly feels cold.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, that's a very good theory and we have also had that experience of going from hot to cold with just the shift of a cloud and gust of wind. You are right about the cold water sucking heat out through our feet as well, because once we were out of the cold water on our feet we definitely warmed up a lot. ❤️

    • @Weathernerd27
      @Weathernerd27 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to know cold feet make such a big difference. I was thinking about getting a wetsuit so I could swim/surf in the pacific in the 50 degree Pacific Ocean but it sounds like I might need to insulate my feet as well. I've swam for about 30 min nonstop in Lake Tahoe which is about 60 degrees. After a few minutes Lake Tahoe didn't feel that cold but this about the lower limit of what a person can get used to. Lake Tahoe is clearer than most lakes and looking 50 feet at big boulders was neat.

      Hi Myra this is just an old pair of trail runners that I only use for water hikes, so don't care that they get soaked through (which I'd never do with a new pair of shoes). And yes you're right -- I do bring a change of socks so that once we're out of the water, I can change socks and help warm my feet up a bit. You guys did the Subway justice with your excellent footage - awesome! Adam, glad to see you finally put a shirt on when you were shivering to death 😂. I've been up there several times for photos, and you all cruised it! Also, I think top down does require rappelling in a couple of places (but not sure). Hope you had a leisurely (and warm) drive home! Tnx, Paul

      Haha thanks Paul -- so cool that you've gotten to go several times! Ya the top down does require rappelling, but that won't be a problem for us because we already have harnesses and belaying equipment. But the wetsuits are something we will definitely need to acquire!! The drive home was lovely but long, because of course someone crashed on the 15 coming back from Vegas and created a 2-hour delay. Still, totally worth it for an incredible adventure! ❤️

    What a fantastic video, you two! Turning around for safety was definitely a good idea. I had an unfortunate near-drowning experience at Zion in the narrows in the winter due to below freezing water temps filling up my waders (last time I trust someone who tells me the water isn’t that deep 🤣). That water literally takes your breath away. Also I would totally be like Elise with the water droplet, even though I know the likelihood of a brain eating toxin is slim. As always, I really enjoyed the music 😀

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for having my back on the water droplet Emma! And that is so scary and awful about your near drowning. The shock of the old is actually what can kill a lot of people, either by shocking the heart or affecting your breathing. That's why we try to practice cold water immersion as often as possible while not on the trails. So glad you are okay though! ♥️

  • @stephenschwandt6309
    @stephenschwandt6309 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video. I’ve done it from the top down twice. It’s one of the most amazing hikes out there. A wetsuit and a rope are needed to do it from the top. There are two short 2 repels as I recall. There were anchors in those places. Also better to go in June when it is warmer out. Makes those cold plunges a bit more bareable. Still, great to see the Subway.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! We can't wait to do the top down route, especially since we've been working on our roping up skills lately. The ranger said he'd never done it without a wetsuit except one time when it was 103F, and even then he got a little hypothermic, which we thought was insane. Would definitely aim to do it on a warmer day. Regardless, bottom up was also spectacular!

  • @LosZetasUno
    @LosZetasUno 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    YES! The Subway is my absolute favorite, and I do it every year. I think the Subway tends to be colder because it forces you into the water, blocks out most of the sunlight, and channels the wind to blow directly on you. I always put on a hoodie before entering.
    Next time, try to find the dinosaur tracks!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait that is awesome!!! How do you get permits every year?!? Do you just keep applying and then eventually it happens? Is there a specific strategy? We really want to go back with wetsuits and do top down -- and now that you told us about the dino tracks, find those too!!!

    • @LosZetasUno
      @LosZetasUno 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've honestly never had much of a problem getting a permit. The key is to just plan it out a couple months ahead of time. It's only hard between May and September.
      If you go later in the year, like after October, you don't even need a permit. It's also very cool in the winter because parts of it are covered in snow, and the water has turned to ice. It's more treacherous, but not dangerously so. The initial hike down is still free of slippery ice, so you're safe enough.

    Zion as a whole is kind of otherworldly levels of beautiful... but the Subway is just special among all of that. Especially thinking about the floods that carved out that rounded wall shape from the rock and those pits and pools.
